  • Wonderful piece of music. Interesting interpretation by Horowitz compared to the recording I have at home by Philip Fowke; more attack and played faster but who's to say which is better?

  • I find it very interesting how so many Classical musicians can "Copy" these Classical Masterpieces, but just how many musicians can Create their own?

  • @einrib4truth hmph, don't be ridiculous. If classical music is a gorgeous lively animal, classical pianists are taxidermists.

  • LOVEIT

  • 69 dislikes?go have 69 with your grandmothers on th top mothafuckaz,we r talkin about HOROWITZ plays best sonata of CHOPIN what else can u ask...just magic

  • Horowitz, eres maravilloso!

    What a beautiful human being

  • lol a woman fainted during this recital/day... it wasn't while he was playing but im pretty sure it was a lil while after :D! Saw it on a blooper reel somewhere here on YT lol.

  • 15:46 epic passionate convulsive climax... :D

  • This is the very first time I watch him play this sonata live. Thanks very much for uploading.Though this is not one of my most favorite of his performance.(His Rach 3 is one of a kind or it should be name Horowitz concerto ), but nevertheless unsurpass by many for decades.

  • This is the best version I've ever heard.

  • 14:36 ftw

  • How advanced an age was Horowitz during this offering of talent & genius ? Well into his mid or late 70's for sure. ... and he plays FAR BETTER than most pianists IN THEIR PRIME ! The man was a giant.

  • @tdo23487 Your taste in music is fucked up

  • I love Valentina Lisitsa's version for 2 pianos (by Lizt).

  • Bringing Horowitz into the White House was the only thing that Carter ever did right.

  • @QueerOldDean it was Ragean who brogught him

  • @paweloproxa Not true. That's Jimmy and Rosalin Carter right there at the front center. You can see Carter's unmistakable hair line right at the beginning of this vid.

  • this man was amazing!

  • To be honest I prefer Yulianna Adeeva with this one...

  • Negative comments only from people who are deaf to music.

  • how can such a brilliant pianist have such not-as-brilliant interpretation?

  • Why does youtube say the artist is Ivo Polorelich?

  • Horowitz is my homie.

  • @schmuckenheimer9 fuck u, dont know what homie is, stop acting black u white boy

  • @wazfrmoz Well seeing as to how it was a joke, do yourself a favor and never act in the future like you don't take everything firm and hard in the ass, know wut im sayn???

  • @schmuckenheimer9 so ur joking about blackpeople, u think ur so great because ur white and sophistivcated by listening to classical music dont you, well ive got advice for u, its 2011 bitch....racism at its worse

  • @wazfrmoz It's sophisticated to have proper grammar? I'm not white (who's the rascist one if you don't think people besides white people can be sophisticated) and I can enjoy whatever kind of music I want just like you, regardless of race. So, stop trying to be one of those single-brain cell people on youtube who think they can call any comment rascist when they're not smart enough to even spell correctly.

  • @schmuckenheimer9 oh swo now ur [playing the race game, just because i attended a black susstandard school, it gives you the right to mock me, u white people are just so patronising, dw bitch umma be getting my repatriation check and shove down ur moms pussy. Fuck white people

  • @wazfrmoz Nothing you say to me or to anybody else over the internet will make up for you extremely small penis.

  • @schmuckenheimer9 small penis? are u fuckin serious, haha, shit ur funny...sounds like only a guy who got bullied would say....why don't you go back to jacking off from pictures of ur mom

  • @schmuckenheimer9 hey dude, im really sorry that was my younger brother, he was going through my youtube comments posting inappropriate comments, sorry

  • @wazfrmoz

    Your younger brother is funny

  • 15:45 OMG!!!!

  • @andrefilho010

    Hahaha I know right!

  • @andrefilho010

"OMG"... unbelievable!!!!!!!!! you want told ;)

  • what? 'Artist: Ivo Pogorelich'?

no one can play as good as Horowitz. :D

  • merci Mr Horowitz!

  • @Daphnis1402 Pure Beauty. Thank you so much Mr Horowitz.

  • That was my point he lived in Russia and didnt have a choice with his carreer. I would have probably been a farmer with no education because I had dyslexia and didnt find out until my junior year in college so I took electronics and forgot about the piano. I always loved classical music and studied music all my life until I switched to electronics and now not doing much because cell phones took over the telephone business oh well I still love classical music.

  • He's got such an amazing touch, why comment on his manners? it was perfect

  • One of the greatest musical talents on the planet. Thats fact whether you like the music or not. He has used every bit of his talent that was given to him. For that alone I have tremendous respect. Not many can say that.

  • I takes hours of pratice time and many years to play this kind of music. When I went to college I was expected to practice 4 hours + Per day. There is no shortcuts in Classical music. Horowitz didnt waste time playing video games when he grew up in russia He probably didnt have a choice in his carreer.

  • @misteron07 actaully, initially his parents wanted him to become a scientist but due to his poor marks, he stuck with the piano - good thing for us

  • This guy is brilliant, but his manner's do leave something to be desired. I've seen a few of his performances and I've seen him on a couple of occation's where he'd blown his nose and tossed his snot rag on top of the piano and kept on playing.

  • @Klaaaan1 That was in his Moscow concert when he was over 80 years old! Why even talk to his "manners"? Get real dude, he played amazing, magnificent in that concert!

  • @Klaaaan1 beset by this brilliance, and you are criticizing his table manners?? lol...

  • @Klaaaan1 And the Snot rag sold on Ebay for millions! Sheesh.. would you rather he drip snot on the keyboard? Looks like he still got invited to some grand places.

  • may i know what year this was? Beautiful as always! what a treasure.

  • 15:46 dude,you need to calm down a little

  • that's his wife? ?.... you'd think horowitz got all the hot ladies xD

  • @richclayderman As you can hear in his playing, he is a man that goes for emotion and personality, not so much for the looks ;)

  • @Horowitzer just kidding xD

  • @Horowitzer His emotion in only the carrier for the technique. Dynamics and taking dares. Thats H.O.R.O.W.I.T.Z

  • Sound quality is detrimental to the performance and there are other versions of Horowitz playing Sonata 2.

Any way one looks at it, this is an extraordinary performance by one of greatest pianists, artists, musicians who ever lived :-))

The assortment of alcoholics and dopers who feel compelled to post idiotic critiques here - go away and do something your puny brains are capable off, maybe play chopsticks but play that well !!! LOL

  • Beautiful execution on a beautiful piece! <3 Horowitz <3

  • The lost video of Horowitz's performance at the White House featured "Boogie Woogie".

  • I only see negative comments. I highly doubt any of you can play anywhere near this good or ever will. Face it this old timer has some skills, this was beautiful. The sound quality is also not at all his fault.

  • @tdo23487 anyone who says something negative about this man is an idiot

  • Definitely, not his best day.

  • Horowitz was the most unegotistical pianist ever,

  • Actually, in response to someone who posted below, Jimmy Carter was president from Jan. 1977 to Jan. 1981 (yes, he was still president in 1981). And during that time, my brother had a T-shirt that said "No gas? My (donkey)" . And our Mom had this shirt that said "Hands Off My Tuts!", with a King Tut on both sides (ewww!) And the girls at school would wear "star jeans", nice tight fitting jeans with a star on the back side. I don't know how I remember all this. Enjoy the Horowitz piano!

  • How appropriate that the Funeral March would be performed for Jimmy Carter during his dismal presidency.

  • No offence to anyone, but i really don't like how Horowitz plays, I feel like he always finds a way to ruin any Chopin piece.

  • @adamdcFaN fuck off

  • @adamdcFaN I can see your point... but I like the way he plays

  • @adamdcFaN I'm sorry for you, and for who needs to reply «fuck off» to you too; he didn't understand that you are who first loses out (a lot).

  • the sound is utterly horrible. sounds like someone stick a microphone right inside the bottom of the piano. almost sounds like this is being recorded through a long pipe. HOrowitz still got the power.

  • Yuliana Avdeeva gives a marvelous interpretation of this sonata in 2011 at the Chopin Competition in Warsaw.

  • his hands dont even look real.... phenomenal

  • What year is this?

  • 63 ppl are idiots. This is one of THE greatest piano virtuosos ever. AMAZING

  • the audience is silent because they just realized that they our in the presents of a god

  • I think this is the most expressive i have seen horowitz play (in terms of random jerking around and stuff).

  • @wnxg4nd4lf what was wrong? In contrary, I loved it!

  • Might be cause of the poor recording but, to be perfectly honest, i didn't like this. Maybe Horowitz was too old to play a piece like that. I don't know what's the case, but one thing is certain : This performance sounds below average. Horowitz was one of the best pianists ever. This performance isn't.

  • @wnxg4nd4lf I thought that this performance was below par in some ways brilliant in others. By this time in his life Horowitz was not at the top of his game. Listen to his Carnegie Hall performance in the 1960's.

  • The 4th movement sounded like a song in fast forward lol

  • Pres. Carter. After hearing this, I'll forgive him for having The Captain and Tenille at the WH doing "Muskrat Love." Horowitz, I know all the criticisms. Slow, loud, occasional clinkers. Still at the top of the top rung, IMO.

  • 大家好 好精彩 好棒 謝謝

  • When and for what president was he playing for?

  • @8kenjacob President Jimmy Carter 1976 to 1980.

  • Bunch of snobs.

  • @Drakozap I'm sorry?

  • @dannes22

    they barely applauded at this...

  • @Drakozap Oh I see.

  • Great performance, too bad of the sound quality

  • 17:02 starts the most beautiful part of the sonata... actually I think most people don't know about it.

  • 16:19, i went to the hospital ):

  • Nothing special.

  • @BRONGOHORST Are you kidding me? One of, if not the, best pianist of the 20th century playing some of the Romantic era's best piano music.

  • @Ltrainer95

    I!m qualified to say this.

Best are Josef Lhevine.David Saperton.Leopold Godowsky.

Rachmaninov.Josef Hofman. And today Marc Andre Hamellin.

Horowitz is average. Too many falsch, and slow playing.

  • @BRONGOHORST "im qualified to say this" - "horowitz is average"

oh youre qualified for something. but i dont think its speaking.

  • @l3lackMambal

True. You are right. My English is not so good.

    It is low level punch.

BUT my ears are perfect. If you can`t hear falsch it is your problem.

    Never mind.Think what you want.

And don`t reply me on music theme.

Theme is Horowitz playing. Not my English. You understand me perfectly.

  • @Ltrainer95

True but he is only ONE of the best. In my opinion he is II league.

Rachmaninov is much better. He is I league.

  • @BRONGOHORST I think when you get to this level of playing, a lot of it becomes preference, or opinion, rather than being able to legitimately rank each in a manner of who is the absolute best. I think he is one of the best, but the argument could be presented that to someone else he may be the best. In their opinion. I don't know that he is the absolute best, but I do think he is one of the best.

  • @Ltrainer95

Thank god we have you tube and we can compare.

There are most exceptional pianists we did`n know that they are existed.

In my time Richter was number one. Artur Rubinstein considered as a number one.

So modern communication show another piano monsters hidden in history.

For my piano teacher Alfred Cortot was top of the top. So compare Joseph Lhevine and Cortot.

    Technical monster vs pale pianist.

    Best regards Eb.

  • @BRONGOHORST Thank you for the insightful post. Far too often Youtube becomes a place for people to throw out profanity's and lose sight of the purpose of the site. In this case, we both grew from each other's post. Thank you for that!

    Most sincerely,

    Luke

  • @Ltrainer95 My opinion is that there will ever be "the best" musician of all time. There are way too many that have all tied for 1st place! Horowitz is an example of what I call a "Level 20" musician (Honourary Maestro), who could play ANYTHING.

  • @AIKevorkian I think we are on the same page. Once a musician gets to a certain level it is really hard to say who is better. /Agree

  • @BRONGOHORST Vladimir Horowitz was greatly influenced by Rachmaninoff. Characteristics of Sergei's playing is reflected in Horowitz's playing. anyway how do you define 'much better' ? and does it really matter to group pianists into leagues? i mean, they all enjoy the music they play and this is the way they interpret it. and every pianist have different experiences in life that made them interpret it the way they do.

  • @danmoreful

In some meaning there are certain music that Horowitc can not play.

Alkan can be played only if you have para technique.Horowitz, not poses this kind of para technique.

Godowsky YES. Hofman YES. Joseph Lhevine YES. Artur Rubinstein NO. Michieangeli NO. Gilels NO

David Saperton YES. Pogorelic NO. Marta Argeritch NO. Marc Andre Hamelin YES.

So,, the best pianist must play everything on earth in TEMPO. Everybody can play slow or falsch.

Only some of them can it play properly.

  • Comment removed

  • @BRONGOHORST I'm intrigued by your comments. EB Emerson...sounds like TEMPO is "too" perfect. Is it computer /MIDI generated or a live performance? Is there live video footage of this player?

  • @plinkenstein

Go to You Tube and you will find what I`m talking about.

Of course i think on living play.

    Regards.Eb.

  • @BRONGOHORST Who are you trying to fool? It's a sampled piano and it is done with a sequencer. There is no live footage of the player EB Emerson. Maybe that's you.

  • @plinkenstein

We are not talking about Eb Emerson.

Eb Emerson is not theme of this writing conversation.

You can prove your claims about sampled piano.

    Prove it.☺

    Regards.Eb

  • LOL at the guy at 25:00 who had to work his ear after Vladdy smashed that last chord...

  • Vladimir H. = my musical inspiration; I wish I could have met him. He is so unbelieveably THAT good. I am so fortunate to have experienced this full song of Chopin.

  • Amazing Channel

  • no other pianist recorded ever plays thet the way he does would love to knoew if one existes bravo horowitz

  • I have this major obsession with Chopin lately. Who was this guy inspired by? he was ahead of his time for sure...

  • @Scorpionskiko mainly bach, mozart and his environment such as his beloved homeland poland

  • @4hm3dimr4n Yes i know that, but he seems to have to taken his influences to another level unlike other composers at that time. I want to know what made him do that...

  • @Scorpionskiko well i read somewhere that while other teachers restricted their students and made them follow similar paths, chopin's teacher was quite easy going and didn't restrict him so much

so to answer your question i'd say his heart simply followed the path that we see in his art

  • @4hm3dimr4n That's true. I read that some time ago. I think that helped him create something different...

  • when i bang a piano, i don't get Chopin's 2nd Piano Sonata, no fair :(

  • @Dustlandindie But he's not banging the piano. ;)

  • @mario54671 What has the Internet done to you, my friend?

  • @Alexjr1543 It hasn't done anything...I was replying to the silly comment they posted where they're saying Horowitz is banging the piano...as in banging the keys. I was saying that, hoping they would reply so I can tell them that he's NOT slamming the keys, otherwise the sound would be harsh.

I think the real question is...what has the internet done to YOU?

  • @mario54671 Sorry about that. I admit that the Internet has ruined me. It does that to people. No hard feelings, right?

  • @Alexjr1543 Nope. I admit, I may have unintentionally given people the wrong idea. :P

  • @mario54671 Funny thing I learned recently. Horowitz's piano is custom-made to suit his specifications. The specifications? A loud sound from a soft touch. The keys are "sensitive", in other words. So you don't even need to bang that piano for a harsh sound. Jeez, I can't imagine how loud banging on it would be.

  • @Zahaele Yes, but there's a difference between a "loud" sound and a "harsh" sound. He wanted his piano to sound loud, not harsh. ;)

  • Superb! TY the polonaise for posting.

  • Horowits is a magician to say nothing of a pianist!!!!!!!

  • I'd like to thank the Internet and Youtube for allowing me to enjoy this gem that I not only would not have been able to watch otherwise, but also would have probably of never heard of.

  • 15:43 I thought he had had a heart attack ...

  • @ludolxx94 ahahahaha oh my gosh i died of laughter !!! im sorry Horowitz! :( <3

  • @ludolxx94 Thank´s ...!! Hace tiempo que no me reía tanto de un comentario . jajajaja

  • Beautiful!

  • I would be pretty nervous if I had to play a 25 min long ballade to the presi-motherfvcking-dent :D

  • Beats Obama's musical and cultural tastes!!

  • did people in the white house had any idea of what they were listening?? they would probably not understand that storm of beauty

  • @blackdragon7780 surely you know that it is rude to applaud during movements. I'm sure they enjoyed the piece =)

  • Beautiful.

  • Who the FUCK would dislike this?!!!!?!?!?!

  • @snoops4ever

  • @snoops4ever uneducated brains

  • @snoops4ever uneducated brains

  • as we french say,:"Chapeaux bas ,messieurs":what a talent, what a genius..bravo l'Artiste!!

  • This piece has so many aspects to it; Intensity, power, darkness etc. But also beauty, brightness, romance, etc. It's like the piano experiences all human emotions in one piece of music. Amazing performance!

  • fuck youuuu!

    poser bitches

    ie sarcasm nigas!

  • One of the true masters of a most brilliant composer.

  • That was a sound performance.

  • 24:55 Bam!!

  • zeror1 you are a real moron and Soulfree2008 you are not so smart because Horowitz is a expert piano player and why do you wanna skip him?

I don't like so much first song but i have still listen it because i wanna know what is it like.

  • @Soulfree2008 Why would someone want to skip this great work? Does it sound boring or strange that you have to "skip" to the famous "funeral march" because it sounds more familliar? Do you still say that you like classical music but only listen to those "classical classics" that keep appearing on tv, movies, radio...? Please, respect the composer's work and listen to it as he intended it to be when he wrote it.

  • This old man is forever young, by playing this shit. ^^

  • @zerori1 Shit is your brain

  • @zerori1 HA! Look at you, you're so cute, trying to distinguish yourself by desecrating a sacrilege. So adorable. Teenagers--am I right? :-)

  • STAND UP AT THE END. They must not be aware of what they just had the pleasure of hearing in person.
