The worst thing I did to my dog was protect it from everything and help her with things. Now she's afraid of everything, and isn't curios about anything like dogs normally are. So yeah it's best to let dogs figure it out on their own unless they're REALLY SCREWED.

Ahh, goldens are so cute! When mine was a tny puppy he used to go under the couch to get away from my older dog to sleep. He hasn't been doing that now because he's bigger but for some reason he tried to put himself under there, and he got his head momentarily stuck.
