Top French stunt driver Remy Julienne was brought in for stunt with Mach 1 driving on two wheels through alley he wrecked four Mustangs and could not get the shot. Top stunt driver Bill Hickman was asked if he could do the stunt which he did in one take. They used Remy Jullienne's entering the alley this is why the car is on the wrong set of wheels upon exit. Remy Julliene was still paid for his work and Bill Hickman added to his reputation as one of America's greatest stunt drivers.
We had a car just like this when we went to see the movie, not knowing this car was in it. When we lift the theater, the movie crowd was standing around our car, thinking it was the car in the movie.
The Mach1 flip to the right, and in the close up WE see the car changing to the other side "dont know how", then the car show THAT opposite side when coming out the alley.
I want to read a Fleming book to know how this happens LOL.
It IS a blooper. They shot the second part with the car on the wrong side, then realized it too late. So they 'fixed' the scene later by adding the in-car shot when the car magically 'switches' to from right to left side down :D
It's because the stunt was filmed in two different locations, they realised the Mustang needed to be filmed exiting the alley into a Las Vegas street and the Vegas crew unfortunately did the stunt with the car on the wrong pair of wheels. The French stuntman wrecked four 302/351 Mustangs trying to get it right. The chase car was a 429CJ. The Mustang that does the ramp jump out of the car park was totalled by the landing and crushed soon after Dunno how many 1970(??) Ford police cars they wrecked
Cycolac - is it because no American stunt drivers at that time were able to take a Mustang onto two wheels that they used a French stuntdriver - or is it because the guy just happened to live in America at that time and was able to perform the stunt? I know that American "thrill show" stunt drivers in 1971 were able to take cars onto two wheels - so I'm wondering why the production company didnt hire them. .
Good question, I don't know. Driving a car on two wheels requires a reasonable amount of skill but provided the car is perfectly balanced and has an LSD or has the rear (drive) axle locked to prevent all drive going to the wheel that's in the air, with practice it's not the most complicated stunt to do. Not sure why a French stunt crew were hired though - unless it was Equipe Reme Julianne who were the best in the business then - but they were very unlikely to have accidentally wrecked any cars.
Cycolac - I remember reading recently that the stuntdriver who performed the first two-wheeler in Diamonds was Buzz Bundy - a thrill show driver. I've seen his name in stunt credits at the end of movies. But I still havent solved the mystery of why a French driver was used later on. My theory is that Buzz Bundy was busy with his stunt show and therefore wasnt available to perform the stunt a second time.
@CycolacFan Buzz Bundy took the car on two wheels into the tunnel - but yes - you are right - the car coming out of the gap was driven by a French stunt driver.
At the end where the car goes through the narrow alleyway, the stunt driver went on different sides on the in and out takes. Thats why they edited in the car fliping over bit in the middle.
at the end when he goes thru the alleyway sideways....how could the car possibly change the way is facing half way thru it?....if you could do that you might as well drive thru it normally lol
at least cops could drive back in the day

I had a 72 mach 1 with a 351C-4V engine and C-6 auto transmission.
For the time that car handled pretty good from the factory.
You could take the corners fast with minimum body roll.
Many cars of the time had pathetic handling, but the Mach I was very good for the time imo.

That Mustang was up for auction a few years ago. It didn't sell, but it had a 429CJ motor.

Fremont's still a great place to visit, long as you don't go east of El Cortez.

guys it's not a mistake, if you look closely in that alley he flips onto the other side.

If he had room to flip he could have just driven straight through lol

@rane29 Unless there was a small gap or something, with a space big enough, and it was flipped the other way.
