  • I'm an 18 year old, living my life like most would have done 45 years ago... I just had to handle for the first time, a loved one passing away. After crying by myself, I turned on the Grateful Dead and was smoothly put into a peaceful state of being and able to get a grip on the entire situation. Thankfully music will always be there to make life better.

    Much love and peace,

    Joel

  • Man, my rainy, shitty Wednesday just brightened up considerably...

  • Music that could calm even the most turbulent morning, and only music that's welcome to my hangover-ed head. (and i only drank half a damn beer) this music along to sensitivity to poisons helps me remember why i usually stick with entheogens, heh.

  • fabul

    ous!

  • It's amazing how some music can get you out of a funky ass mood. Much thanks!

  • she sang a little while and then flew on.

  • SWEET =) LOVE Jerry's eyebrows going up and down as he's just jammin it out!!!!! Peace and Love to all and keep the magic ALIVE =)

  • has to be the best live version of this song

  • 31 people don't want to see snow and rain

  • this brings back memories. music used to sound like this! real artists dont exist anymore. i miss me some grateful dead!

  • @GratefulDeadWarrior There's still some great music being made out there. Take a listen to Deb Talan, also of course Eddie Vedder (with and without Pearl Jam).

  • i heard this tune was about janis Joplin

  • Hey I took LSD when I was twelve and I was honored Valedictorian. I just turned 30 and I am doing just fine. Let your love light shine! My advice: Stay far away from the white horse.

  • congos sounding great!

  • A song from the Reckoning album in the 80's in England, thank you so much Gerry and the Dead ! !! This really rocks, nothing gets close to this.

  • So brilliant and so HiPpiE

  • Thats the best right there. A wellspring of emotion lifts goosebumps and hair and tears of joy.

  • @PhilipRBow Couldn't have said it better myself!

  • we all love and miss you jerry : ) the sound of your voice still brings tears to my eyes

  • Lo bueno es que todavìa recuerdo esos dìas de amor y de felicidad ,que ya no qieren volver. gracias.

  • Im 12 years old and I love this music I just took two hits acid :) and watched this video for 7 hours. PEACE AND HARMONY (~)8)

  • @rainbowcolorsblend shut up kid.

  • @rainbowcolorsblend well aren't you just smart kid. Being a Dead head doesn't mean you have to do drugs. Take my personal advice, keep your head clear and clean. 12 and dropping acid, keep it up and you'll be dead by 20. Good luck

  • @rainbowcolorsblend seems a bit young to even benefit from the experience

  • miss you papa bear

  • Missin you Janice

  • I cry every time I watch this concert. Miss me some good old Grateful Dead. This is the best Bird Song ever and the Franklin's Tower from that show is also the best I have ever heard.

  • when the world gets crazy awful I come back to you...and my head spins back into place... neverending thank you jerry....I wish my child could have seen you...don't you cry dry your eyes on the wind lalalala

  • @lizardes - amen brother

  • amen brother

  • An anthem for the mind and possibly the most beautiful Grateful Dead performance I have ever heard is this specific version of this song. Jerry is belting this with absolute soul. Wish I could have the chance to have seen him.

  • One of my favorite Dead tunes done absolutely beautifully

  • Blaze foley

  • Beautiful song, got to hear them do this in Vegas back in 93' Great memory :)

  • wow. There an incredible amount of passion and soul in his performance, what a special person. Thank you for posting.

  • Most

    Annoying

    Audience

    Ever.

Oh look, a quiet part, let me just whoop at the top of my lungs because clearly that's important and I paid good money to be here.

  • @iddn glad i did not pay money to read your post. either you get it..or you don't. why judge. enjoy the ride. it's free, as we should all be.

  • @iddn Try listening again. THE most popular touring band ever, playing an acoustic set in NY. It is so quiet, compared to other rock concerts. The one part where the audience does explode is near the end of the jam (where bob is nodding his head). The audience is paying close attention, as all the musicians come together. And suddenly, the music has a way of ripping screams out of you. The Dead and their audience live for these moments. As Bob says at the end, "we are having some fun now."

  • @Lchristyhastings I've listened to it several times.I can't get past people getting their Whoop! on.

  • I just love deadheads man, ya gotta!

  • this stuff always stops me in my tracks. Coolness squared

  • deadhead from birth.. (probs conceived at a show :P)

every person in my fam has a song, my parents song is "not fade away," my dad used to sing me "i will take you home"

anyway, this has always sorta been "mine" and im sure lots of other people relate to its wonderful melody and touching lyrics.

    truly incredible work

  • 4:10

  • Robert Hunter wrote this for Janis :-)

  • video quality is quite good, is this a DVD u can purchase?

  • @GeezerYoung Yes, it's called "Dead Ahead" and has accompanying official release Albums, the acoustic release came out under two different names"Reckoning" (as in Dead Reckoning, and old catch phrase), and also "For the Faithful". The electric release is called Dead Set. All are culled from Warfield & Radio City Music Hall 1980 Fall tour. Some tremendous stuff from an often overlooked period

  • <3 PEACE AND LOVE.

  • <3

  • BEEP! BEEP!

  • i think i can speak for a lot of folks by saying- w/ out songs like this our lives would be so different in so many ways!

I'm a better man today because of them! Thx, guys!

    Awesome.

  • my all time favorite Grateful Dead song. Bless you, Jerry!

  • OMG.... Such a great rendition.

The stars were in alignment this night.

    So Nice...

  • @ch1na.....could be.......but, the shorter bobs pants, the more intense he performed!!

  • its so funny...29 ppl dislike this....i dont get it??

  • @redpigskinz maybe they think Mickys pants are to short and Bobby s are to long

  • @redpigskinz they were you know those bird watchers oldtimers looking to buy some kinda birdsong thingie.

  • he's God.

  • @GodStarRevisited69 - I think Jerry would give you a butt whoopin for saying such a thing! You should listen to "Cold Jordan" and "My Brothers and Sisters". He sang about "taking Jesus as your daily guide" and "we can all be together when we make it to the promised land" "we can walk together with the Father and the Son."

  • Fare you well, Jerry!

  • Is this the show where Frankin and Davis introduced the band? ...

  • This is such a great band, great track. Just checked out a really awesome track you may like if you dig this search " Pai Crowd, The Music Video,,,Groove•O•Ly•O•Scene "

  • back then, Janis Joplin was viewed pretty much the same way Amy Winehouse was viewed now...only rehab wasn't a household word ...(Betty Ford hadn't gotten to the White House yet.). Obviously Janis's work was a bit more impactful, but not 'everybody' was a star back then either...No Karaoke, talent shows the likes of today...but Janis only put out a couple of albums, and Pearl was posthumous.

I'm deadicating this to Amy, just for today...kinda like she lived.

  • This is music, my friend.

  • This was the Dead's tribute to Janis, Playing it now thinking of Amy Winehouse.

    David B

  • @daithesceptic Hi David I am here because of your comment on Amy's interview. I was not familiar with this song-thanks for introducing me to it. Its really nice and appropiate.for both Janis & Amy. My closest pal, also a David, encouraged me to listen to Amy's music. He passed away last year; so Amy's passing had a big impact on me. Thanks. :) Deb

  • I was at higate right before he died in 1994,I'll never forget it!!!

  • Jerry was there @ the "Furthur " show @ Woostock. Awesome...

  • best 10 minutes of music ever performed

  • i've never heard something like this before man, this is so good man

  • @TheBrianStones Wow, then you are in for a long strange trip of seemingly infinite Jerry magic. Indeed, though, this is extrodinary.

  • awesome video. jerry has so much soul.

  • miss jerry

  • @BMPcontent Since Phish tour started... lol@Gutter punks

  • you don't have to be a pot head to be a dead head?

  • just learned this song from the video

    winning

  • Anyone know what model Jerry's guitar is here?

  • @southrules Tiger by Doug Irwin

  • @m371514 That's not a Tiger, buddy.

  • @southrules For Workingman's Dead and American Beauty Garcia played vintage Martin D-18 and D-28 guitars. The guitar in the video looks to me like a Martin.

  • let jerry and janis souls rest in peace

  • this is the reason we all fell in love with the Music ;)

  • My favorite great Grateful Dead classics: Birdsong, Shakedown Street, He's Gone, Fire on the Mountain, so many ...

  • there is a piece of jerry in my soul... my mind and body find peace when i hear his voice ...

  • This band is at its tightest when everyone is loose. they meld as one.

  • @liberatedsage

    SO very true

  • i'll always be a jerry's kid. god rest his soul....

  • amazing in so many ways.

sounds, energy, movement, expressions... i am so glad that i get it.

    yay universe!!!

  • Love me some jerry.

  • This is like the greatest thing I've heard all day. Like a bird he sang and then flew off.

Proud to be one of Jerry's kids.

  • Good lullaby for the squids.

  • 27 yokels

  • 4:15 check out Jerry's Smile

  • 26 dislikes. Probly juggalos.

  • here's to you sulieman I hope n pray ur in a better place bro...

  • What A Great Moment In Life..........

  • I can't stop listening to it !

  • Awesome Song!!

  • Tender tender Bird Song! We miss you Jerry.

  • How many times I have seen them do this song. Just wondderful.

  • @LydiaLia407 47

  • Man...this jam cooks!

  • Grateful Dead = Awesome

  • A perfectly amazing band!!!! And I am proud to say, they are from my hometown...San Francisco!!! My mom and dad were deadheads, and so am I. The Dead always stayed so true to their form of hippie or bohemian country-rock style. It's really hard to classify it if you think about it, eh? Great video...thanks for posting!!!

  • @greenplanet2400 please teach me ur ways!!!!

  • Jerry Garcia was pure genius

  • is this the performance that is on the Reckoning cd?

  • @nbass88 it's from the Dead Ahead Dvd Concert

  • honk if you miss the fat man

    (beep beep)

  • @JABFELA honk honk

  • @JABFELA HONK!!

  • For a guy missing a finger Jerry had some pretty awesome licks ....b

  • very true but it was his picking hand so it didn't really matter much. His banjo playing on the other hand

  • I am honered to have seen this tour. We knew something special was to be had with the way the stage was set. Close with no amps showing. The whole first set was acoustic and awesome. Second set smoked. Brent really shined. I miss you Brent.

  • great music

  • word dog

  • Dooooooont cry nooow..... dont you cry

sleeeeeep in the stars, dont you cry, dry your eyes

  • @langer215 i want to (cry)when i hear them sing it

  • A lifestyle that is thankfully behind us.

  • @BobLeKatt that's not what your momma said

  • @BobLeKatt Such a strange comment on such a beautiful song.

  • probably one of the best versions they ever did...i miss the sweet doodles of jerry's guitar

  • Seems almost unreal to see and hear this stuff after so much water has passed under the bridge... What a beautiful moment . Peace.

  • This song always remind me of being alone out on a hill sidein the woods, sunny mid day, smoking chronic and going on a hike

by the stream moist and shady.

  • Lucky! Greatful Dead! Goodbye.

  • unbelivable Jerry Garcia

  • Some get it and some don't. If your one that understands the music and appreciates the talent, hold on. It's a "long strange trip." If not it's ok. Turn the channel.

  • Not too long ago, I read a blurb...basically saying, for those who dont like the grateful dead...probably never really listened to the grateful dead. be good family.

  • ACOUSTIC GUITAR - BASICS OF REAL MUSIC

  • Brent is the shit. Especially with long hair.

  • 26 REFUCKINGTARDS didn't like this........ HAA! Even if you are NOT a deadhead, I would think that people would at least appreciate the music for what it is.

  • best dead vids are by friscobay01 thanks

  • Gotta love Birdsong!

  • Wow! Smokin Birdsong! Hittin' on all cylinders! Miss you all! Thanks for the vid.

  • Awesome memories.. Miss those times, catching every show I could. RIP Jerry..Thanks for the great memories!!

  • I have 126 hours of the dead and cherish every second. Bird song is still one of my faves, as is the countless versions of Dark Star. I miss them terribly

  • love this song. I may have been at this show. If it was Halloween night I was there.

  • anyone who doesn't like the dead is a fuckin loser no offense

  • @VancyPants5000 sweet troll dude!!

  • @VancyPants5000 So blunt. But I know exactly what you mean. And that's why most of my friends learned to like it over time... haha cuz people these days have no idea. I think people still have an opportunity to open up and find something special within Grateful Dead... even if they're a loser right now.

  • Before MTV unplugged, man they were originators.

  • Hello

  • god how i miss the dead, best time in my life. so many friends and so much love.

  • This was an excellent, excellent video. Just loved it!

  • i happened on another live version of this song on the radio last summer while driving home as a powerful thunderstorm was just a few miles up the road from me.

a wonderful bit of life was this song playing while the lightning in the clouds illuminated the night every second or two. it was beautiful.

  • people dislike this? were they lost or something?
