Up here in Canada Simcoe county has turned all the north an south lines into gravel trail for Cyclists Hikers and Snowmobilers in Winter Ive rode my bike from Barrie to Orillia many summers and its a smooth gradual ride often think what it woulda been like riding the train cheers !
Baltimore has a lot of these old rails left. In spots where the concrete has come loose you can see the rails that they paved over. There was one spot where there were a lot of abandoned sidings- tracks are in the grass. Or were- I went there recently and they were all gone. There's one spot where there's 4 boxcars on a siding- but the connection to the mainline was ripped up so they're stuck there! Something haunting about it all...
heres an idea if something is abandon then y dont we fix it up and reuse it or recycle the material but i learn alot about my home town of blairsville and torrance

There are some picture in there of the old abandoned railroad that runs through the middle of houston. The circus used to ride in right on those very tracks in 2:31
theres an abandoned rail line here in belmont north carolina from the peidmont and northern railroad they abandoned it in 1973 and it is in horrible shape i wish some one could restore it
It all just looks like one day everyone had woken up unable to notice the lines any more and it's hard to believe that so much is just abandoned and nobody cares. Here in the UK all the material would be salvaged very quickly - not only the steel rails, bridge decks and rolling stock but even wooden sleepers as fence posts or borders for flower beds - and the land put to alternative use. If officialdom fails to act promptly on closure of a line, thieves and vandals soon do their worst :(

Instead of ripping them up, if a community, industry or railroad sees a potential that at some point in the future traffic could return the line is left in place. And at times those lines have returned to service. For example, perhaps a mine has given out on a long branchline and there is no more traffic. But, years later the price of the metal goes up and the mine opens. It happens.
@Boss302fan Thanks for the heads up regarding American practice. I take your point that leaving the track in place allows for the line to be returned to service fairly easily - even if the track needs to be relaid when it is (Longfield to Southfleet is one such UK route) - but too often nasty politics lie behind UK closures and sad to say 'they' want to be sure the railways and mines stay shut. These industries have been strongholds of organised labour and Mrs Thatcher in particular wanted rid.
@dajwilkinson That happens here as well. Not so much a labour issue, but sometimes an environmental one. Take away the railroad and they can't open up that nasty mill anymore. That type of thing.

With modern control systems and smaller industries moving to trucks or intermodal instead of carload traffic....the existing main lines for the most part can handle the tonnage moving today

Please save them FROM destruction. So I can walk them! I don't know what it is, but I know many of you must feel the same way. I just feel the need to walk abandoned tracks. There's so much history behind them. From a line that was once the main use of transporting goods and materials..
anybody know what happened to that steam locomotive from 0:52 looked like it was prety much a pile of rust too bad someone didnt find it sooner would have been at least a good museum peice if not able to be brought back to opertional condition like GN1355 here in town they cant get it runing so they did a cosmetic restore on it looks great now wish they could get it running though i would love the chance to learn to drive it for a living.
@gtafan2006 This old thing was property of a poorly funded preservation group. They could not fund to store, shelter or insure it. They asked the city to help them but the city had no money or interest in the project. They finally abandon the project, filed for bankruptcy & the court ordered it be sold it to a scrapper to liquidate their assets. It was scrapped on location, cut apart & sent to a foundry for melting into new products.
@microbusss Would be a simple way of doing it; buy a quad bike, fit it with some retractable high railer wheels that don't get in the way of the tyres ( so the tyres sit on the rails) and remember to bring a chainsaw with you. There will be times when trees growing through the tracks will get in the way, and you have no option than to cut it down to continue
May'be if our governments would stop investing so much money in roads, we could make a better reinvestment in railways, much more efficient and environmentally friendly
@TrainmasterCurt It doesn't work that way in North America. Unlike the nation's highway system, freight railroads are not owned or managed by the government. Where there is some money available for infrastructure improvement, most available funds go to the highway systems where you and I drive. I don't see it changing in the near future.
That scene with the abandond tanker car. I live about 4 miles from that. I opened the unloading valve on it a few years ago. there was still some NH3 wich is liquid fertilizer that came oozing out. That thing has sat there for at least 25 years.
@Boss302fan im sure most of those lines that dont need much trackwork could be turned into an operational tourist line that could make at least some money. at least they would'nt be rusting away
@gtafan2006 The problem here is that again....it's an issue of losing money. Tourist lines in North America are facing tough times. To buy a line that doesn't need "much trackwork" costs a great deal of money. And of course the line may go to areas where there isn't a tourist base or there are already tourist operations in the area. IF there is a business capable of operating the line, most railroads will sell them. But unfortunately those cases are rare.
@Intransitman I disagree. Almost 100 percent of the rail operations in the US (and to a slightly different degree Canada and Mexico) are in business to make a profit for their owners. While politics can be heavily involved, making a profit is the key to whether or not a line is abandoned.
