It's not fake. This is a legitimate way to splice two wires. It's really only economical on Extremely High Voltage (EHV) power lines. The ends of the two wires are placed into a copper connector and clamped down. This holds the tension, but doesn't create a water-tight & electrically sound splice. The connector has explosives built-in that when detonated, cause the copper to liquify & compress against the wires. This results in all 3 pieces (2 wires and a connector) becoming one solid mass
