Long before the first African was kidnapped and brought to America, there were tens of thousands of people, mostly Native Americans and yes some whites who were already slaves here working the plantations and doing other work for their owners. They intermarried with the Africans that were brought here later. By the time of the Civil War, there were very few purely African slaves and in fact a very large number were more than 50% white.
