I had a cat named Minou that just passed away this week. She was 18 years old and was a legacy from my french ex-wife. When got her (the cat) we referred to her as minou (which is the generic french name) until we could think of a name; minou just stuck and the rest is history. My Minou will be sorely missed. Actually I had a cat that used to do this when she was young. Mostly because she was wild and wanted to protect her food, and it is because you are petting her and are close because she doesn't want it to be taken away from her.

I have tried a similar technique to get my older cat, Grayson, to accept our newer cat Milton.

Grayson is now 8 years old, the other cat more than a year old now, but Grayson still growls whenever Milton is around. Milton always wants to play and be affectionate, but Grayson is not having it...

She was a kitten and new and if she had food and you come within a meter of her she just growled.

And the best way to teach her that your not trying to take her food is by petting them whilst they're eating.

It worked.

The reason why Minou was growling was because she had just moved into an apartment with another cat, and was facing the other cat while eating. In order to introduce them, I gave them a pleasurable stimulus (food) and paired it with an unpleasurable stimulus (being in the same room together) in hopes that they would perhaps learn to associate good things (wet food, being pet, etc) with being in the same room together.
