Here you can see the breadth of Mr. Stepney's work as a producer arranger. Chess really allowed him to spread his wings behind the mixing console. Dig Minnnie with Rotary Connnection. What a great sound!
Hey, thanks for sharing such beautiful music with the world. It needs it. This song has a Fifth Dimension sound to it, "Up, up, up and away in my beautiful ballon."
The famous Minnie Ripperton (Loving You) came from this group. The music was composed by Charles Stepney, Composer and arranger for Earth, Wind and Fire until his untimely death at the time of Earth, Wind and Fire's Spirit LP.
... Charles Stepney was a GOD amongst mortals in the music industry ... Rotary Connection & Earth Wind & Fire had the most sophisticated, complex jazz/soul/funk/R&B arrangements in music history ... and the GREAT Mr. Stepney was at the epicenter of BOTH of those legendary bands ... Maurice White was never the same after Mr Stepney passed ... my god, imagine how much greater EWF would have been, had MR Stepney lived past his work on Earth Wind & Fire "Spirit" (their best lp)...
... to this day, this song brings forth genuine tears of joy from my soul ... it is a mystical experience to hear the almighty Charles Stepney at work, knowing full well that this man helped form the blueprint for Earth Wind & Fire's legendary sound ... the swirling complex arrangements are the obvious link between Rotary Connection & Earth Wind & Fire(1973-1977) ... imagine Earth,Wind&Fire if Mr Stepney had lived longer ... the greatest band in music history, would have been even greater ...
Check out Sergio Mendes' Fool In The Hill or Ye-Me-Le albums on A&M Records. This tune carries the same Brazilian feel of Sergio's material.
BTW - could you please post the title track of this great album next time? I love this disc from beginning to end and Hey Love is one outstanding track.
Let's not forget the venerable Ramsey Lewis! There seems to be a nucleus of artists that revolves around (collaborated with) Ramsey during this period. Diane Reeves, EWF, Caldera, the Emotions, Minnie Ripperton and others that I may have missed can all be traced back to Ramsey Lewis. I know Maurice White was a former drummer of his and Charles Stepney was associated with him as well.
Very much a 'Chicago Sound' that I missed because I left Chicago in the early 70's and moved to New York. But I am very proud of all of them, and remember this song from high school days. Thanks for posting!
been looking for this for years - thanks for posting wish i could buy it somewhere

Magic - reminds me of a genre of film scores.. real production work only with sublime vocals - and not just Minnie - God bless her.
