@ronpaulrevered Unfortunately, I don't currently have time to TAB things out, let alone post new videos. I would be happy to try to answer any question about a specific part of a song though. Thanks for watching.
Hi Dave, Been watching some of your Phish stuff for some time and you've inspired me to learn this song. Much of my youth was spent at shows. Without a doubt, your view count will increase daily as I spend the next couple of days, weeks, months, years, whatever learning all the parts. Don't know why you don't post any more videos. Certainly a pleasure seeing your songs. Maybe you're working on Reba and waiting for the right time to unveil it to the YouTube world :) Best
@eyeandmind You are so nice to check-in and thanks for your positive feedback. I've been really busy over the past year but I definitely hope to keep posting songs from time-to time. Keep on enjoying the guitar!
I love those tasty arpeggios, harmonic, jazzy riffs he throws in there in the first section and the Tweezer ending. I'm about to go to work and once again, you're vids put me in a good mood so I"ll have your version of this song stuck in my head to get me through the 1pm meeting in under an hour from now. I'm off to work, thanks for setting the mood for my work day! Peace and keep 'em coming. DH and HMG for life, who else wants them to go on tour n come?!?! East coast!
duuuuuude! were you by any chance at the 96 vegas show? that was an incredible hh! i can't believe you can play that whole song on an acoustic guitar!! wow!! the thank you mr minor part was the highlight for me. but the background lights fading in to the picture was a cool touch.. awesome stuff!!
hey by anychance will you be able to send me the tabs or music? this is absolutely one of my favorites songs, and you have just inspired me to learn it on the guitar!
i had my doubts for a few seconds but i had GOOSE BUMPS by the end... fuckin rock dude... without a doubt the greatest LIVE song... no worries about the glow stick war, i still recreate the went war
i have a question 4 the guy playing in the vid. how do u learn these phish/dead songs. ive tried online tabs n theyre a good start but they suck 4 the most part, ive tried by ear n its really time consuming. how do u do it????
It's really just a combination of major musical obsession, ear training, some formal music training and 20+ years playing experience. When in need, I scrutinize live performances or videos for help. Good luck!
any tips on the basis of the song in remembering the notes cus I got the chords but the notes arnt exactly based on the penatonic scale. Im not asking for the tabs, this is an awesomely constructed solo interpretation of this song!
Pentatonic scales are great for many things but they can be limiting. They wouldn't be my first choice for the first 3/4 of the song, but I'd be all over them in the "Hood" jam. My improv toward the beginning of the song was based mostly on arpeggios and diatonic modes. Is that helpful?
Thanks. The guitar is signed by Trey, Mike and Page from Phish. I met them in 1997 before embarking on the west coast leg of the summer tour. Fond Memories!
It's comments like yours that give me such a big head. I'm extremely flattered. The chords are D minor/A minor...They repeat a few times until you get to an F major 7/E minor progression. Then there's a C major 7(arpeggio or Lydian run)/A minor turnaround and it starts over again. Tadah! I hope that helps. Thanks for watching.
I am amazed that that is all coming from your guitar (well, and your voice of course). BLOODY BRILLIANT! This is your best one. Shows your talent the best. Sorry, cause I like the other ones and am glad your friend is included, but this is so complete even just by yourself!
thanks so much for this sneaky. My computer in college had that glowstick photo for a couple years. Definitely gave me goosebumps. I like to play that last progression every once in a while and think of better times...
You can feel good, I can feel good. This song makes me feel good. You and your buddy could make a fortune off the yuppies down on Pearl Street in Boulder. If you have a day job, you should quit it and move to Colorado.....
please. i play it pretty similarly, but i'd like to compare your playing to mine so i can have a better understanding of the notes on the fretboard. again, a crude write-up is fine, anything is appreciated.
David, this is phenomanal man, really, you and hugh are just a HUGE breath of fresh air. Now I have one question: What kind of acoustic do you use there?
Thank you, and thank you! This is a Martin D-35. In most of the videos we've posted, Hugh plays a Martin 0016 New Yorker. On Runaway Jim he's playing a Gibson.
Kinda brings me back to the U of A student union ballroom ! As a Tucson local i'm stoked to know there are some 'mature' heads making sweet music there. Suprised no jack straw yet, after all that was 'our' song. Will be in old pueblo soon, hope to catch you. Thanks for the inspiration.
Don't know you, 'our' song was meant as 'tucsonans'. If the boys opened with JS after a long roady, 'we' knew all was well. Did see Phish at uof a, though, 92? Maybe we've brushed shoulders...
That was a no-brainer..."half a mile from Tucson..." About Phish 1992- that's a funny one...I was one of those snotty Deadheads who fully rejected Phish until '94. Thus I missed that prime opportunity. :(
man i just watched this again this morning, and when you go into the end jam, the superimposed glowstick war gave me chills. how many of those have i been a part of. and now, another.
Have you made PowerTab for all of your videos? I would die to learn everything you have on your channel
