I just placed an order for a 17" archtop with him. Can't say that he was unfriendly at all. Actually the opposite is true. He was very nice and we discussed different options for the guitar in a very friendly e-mail conversation and he answered all my questions in a professional way. @syndicate1 Well, the good thing about being self-epmloyed and independent is, that you can pick your customers to your like. He has no obligation to serve everybody who is asking him for a guitar. He can only make a limited number of guitars per year in his workshop and if the demand is higher than what he can built, there have to be people going home without a guitar. People like him are artists and artists are picky about the people they work with.
@syndicate1 I am sorry to hear that he obviously didn't like to make business with you. But first, he is not obliged to offer "incremental payments" in a way that serves you best. If you can't pay at once, go to a bank as them for a loan. He is a small business and no bank. There is no benefit for him to take this risk.
And second, if you approached him with the same attitude as you talk about him now, I am not surprised at all, that he stopped talking to you. I would have done the same...
@syndicate1 He builds guitars as a passion and every instrument is like a child to him. You wouldn't marry your child to somebody you don't like at all and you are not sure about if the person is treating it right. Or would you?
You are mad because he didn't want to build a guitar for you. But maybe you should also consider the possibility that the problem wasn't him...
I hope you found another nice jazz box by now. Get over it.
what?: are you in one of those overseas countries, where perverted pedophiles like you you get married to underage kids, when you feel females your own age, aren't good enough:
no wonder the {overaseas} human race keeps deviating every generation or so....
aaaaaahhhhhh, now i see why your such an stern advocate of good old franz pussarink.....
you couldn't afford to buy your jazzbox, & opted to paying for your jazzbox, another way... you went to holland, (where fran cuntarinks lives), offering him oral & anal sex, so you could get your jazzbox for free, & franz fagarink took you up on your offer!!!... oooohh, so i see why you love him so much... your one of his gaytarded lovers, now i see, aaaaahhh.......
@groovebuster2000 i would image, that someone who such as ytourself, having gotten in a project with good old jerkarink, doesn't have to give dam, about what i wasn't able to procure from him: but somewhere in the future for you, (as well as your past), you;ll give that attitude of apathy a check, as one day, you too, will want to sympathy, for someone, having done you wrong.... while it's fine, to take one as much business as you can handle, it doesn't give you the right, to be a jerk (p.2)
@groovebuster2000 in the process.... maybe, that is the reason why, you & he got along so well?.... you know?: 2 jerks, make one big JERK?.... no matter what shore they may be on.... maurice dupont found that out, seveal years ago, too: {who is a french luthier, that makes jazzboxes, too). bad workmanship coupled with a bad attitude, equal pissed off customers & the like..... and his mainly clientele were french based.. when they complained, he knew, he had problems he had to correct..... (p.2)
@syndicate1 as far as I remember it was you who wanted to do an incremental payment. So it is you who can't afford to buy a guitar like this, while he is still running a small but successful business. Maurice Dupont has nothing to do with it. It is just about you and the fact that you didn't get what you wanted.
@groovebuster2000 * NOW: WHERE IN THE H.E. DOUBLE HOCKEY STICKS, DID I EVER MENTION THAT SLUM GULLIAN, TO YOU?.... I NEVER EVEN MENTIONED HIM IN ANY POST TO YOUR KIND... SEE?: YOU CAN'T "MULTI-TASK", LIKE YOU THOUGHT YOU COULD.... YOU CAN EITHER GIVE ORAL SEX, OR POST TO ME, BUT YOU CAN'T DO BOTH!....
@groovebuster2000 in the process.... jerkarink will have to do the same, or else he'll loose what little clientele he's got, putting him in the poor house..... so the pick & choose excuse you used to explain away the reason why he & you are jerks, don't work...... (p.3)
@syndicate1 You see, the problem is that you expect empathy from people, while at the same time you call them names and offend them. For guys like you always the other people are the problem, since it is way more comfortable to put yourself into a victim's position.
I already said that I feel sorry for you, that he didn't want to make business with you. But it is also obvious, that your kind of attitude you show towards other people may be part of it. Oh, i forgot, you are true victim... ;-)
if he'd stop fooling around, with {international} traveling autistic gaytards like you, & focus on those of us, who can actually pay, he wouldn't be limited, to those he can service annually, nor face financial limitations, such as what he is facing now..... it's his own fault, for wanting to get payment, by getting oral sex, & giving anal sex, to a traveling retard, such as you.....

I really like the way the hollenbeck sounds, but I LOVE THAT D'ANGELICO,the 1st 2 sound identical and they sound very acoustic ampd, the hollenbeck and the dangelico are much warmer especialy the dan, that dearmond p/up is just wonderful ,I played a 40s noncutaway at gruhns in nashvegas,Id love to afford one some day, the one you have looks like it might be a D'aquisto built D'an late 50s early 60s?
All really have pretty tone. It's very difficult to have choise but i have a little "préferrance" to the four's one, her tone is for me a little more deep and rich. But my choice i s very "subjectif" i think. Sorry for bad English: i'm French...
Is it a guitar comparison or a show of what you've got? I'm a beginner to jazz too like you, but now I'm practicing with my electric acoustic... After I'm advanced, i'll buy only one, but good jazz guitar that I want to play to the rest of my life...
I forgot my password so my new account is deaconmark12. As for those who might think I cannot play well, then it is good thing the Lord expects me to other things. Those with large egos are usually not the best players, if they are then mostly they are boring to be around.
Not a whole lot of difference, really. If you were to record with them, especially with other musicians, then apply eq, delay, and compression I doubt the difference would be discernable... or even just using a Fender Twin or Polytone at different settings in a "blindfold test".
Wow cool vid.! They all sound very acoustic except for the Elferink. That sounds like a "jazz" guitar.Did you mic the speaker.Maybe that will help. But the Elferink sounds good.Campellone sure does make some beauties though!
The DA sounds the best to my taste with the DA pickup. I had the experience to play the DA New yorker with the DA pickup. I will never forget it. I play a new DA and very soon will be installing a DA guitar mic
They´re all great guitars with different characters and tgive any one of them to me and I´ll be so happy! If I had to choose it would be the Campelloni.
Nice played, especially the start overs on the D´Angelico :)
What a cool comparison, but playing is less about the guitar than the person playing it. Benson played my strat and still sounded great. A great guitar player would sound great on any of these guitars.
guitarpoet1 I Love the sound of the D'Angelico then the L-Frank the holinback in that order. the last one sounded well it came in last...nice guitars I can only wish 4 guitars like that beautiful sound...
there's differences, on each guitar, but all sounds great. many people have what they didn't gained probably if he couldn't hear any differences, he's one of them... ahahahah
You have a beautiful collection. Thanks for sharing and doing the comparison. They all sound fantastic... yet with some differences.I think (as some other do) the D'Angelico sounds slightly better than the rest... perhaps a tad fuller in it's sound.
its kind of like the old saying in chess "dont move 'till you see it"...well if you cant hear the difference, there is no need for you to have more than your l-5
i didnt re-phrase your question...i answered it.he obviously CAN hear the difference.if you can't you might as well be playing a silvertone/harmony.everything makes a difference in tone.i.e wood, metals plastics..ect.ect..do you really think people buy guitars just so they can say they have them?...come one...
I had several guitars at one point in my life. I acquired my custom made Ribbeke arch top 8 years ago and from that point on the rest stayed in the closet. (Including an L-5 and a Johnny Smith Gibson). I sold all of the other guitars except my Taylor 815 flattop. Life is much simpler now. :)
Check out a few of my uploads and you can hear the Ribbeke. There are allot of master craftsmen making wonderful instrument. It all come down to each individual's ears.
You are absolutely correct! The wood does remember. I don't know how but it does. If you let an archtop sit without playing it will sound "stiff" when you first pick it up.
@carvetop01 i had a freaky experience with a Martin d-1 wich i left unatended for some time.. not that much time actually... why does that happen? its freaky
I was given my choice of my Dads old guitar for a b-day gift back in 1968. I turned 16 my Dad would be hurt if I didn't take it. I really wanted a solid body. The D'Angelico was the laughing stock of everyone and it was given the name "THE GONDOLA"...well I still have it and I'm wondering what it's worth today. serial #1652 Oct.1941 also, it's not a cutaway and has no model name on the headstock, just D'Angelico New York. THX Dallas
Well, if you sold that guitar you could probably buy quite a nice a nice house CASH from it's sale for it, that is if the actual date of the guitar was before 1964, james D'aquisto finished up orders after the original D'Angelico died in 1964. only 1164 were ever made by him, and he was the stradivarius of archtop guitars. You can't get any better or more desirable.
Nice vid, guitars, playing. Thanks for an informative session. Mebbe next time, though, edit your vid ie: shorter intro, cut to guitars after you're set up to play, with short re ID of each. Use cue cards if needed, (that actually works). This could help polish your presentation and speed it along.
You should check out the Buscarino Monarch. Went to Mandolin Brothers in NY and it was the best sounding guitar in the room to my ears. (compared to Gibson Johnny Smith, D'agelico excel, D'acquisto, Comins, among others. Very nice collection! The D'angelico sounds the best to me in this video.
You might have to put the mic near the amp speaker(or maybe you have)...I hear more acoustic...very tricky business. You see... it is not always about the wood as you know-too many factors.
Nice guitars. Could you play "Tequila" these guitars? I gauge how good an archtop is thru the playing of this song. This song really tells a lot about an archtop acoustic.
Thanks for this demo. I liked each of them, perhaps the D'Angelico slightly more. I'm thinking of buying one of the new Excel models, like the one you demo'd in another post. Any recommendation on a good Jazz amp under $500?
The Campellone have the most midrange out of them and have more of a focused sound. Was that Elferink single coil? It had a sharper top end, and have a good voice seperation.
That Hollenbeck have a faster decay, and a brighter tone than bass, but had more harmonics complexity.
Still, I prefer the D'Angelico, it had balanced tone on all range and clear harmonics.
the last one is absolutely stunning..what a work of art that guitar is...jealous

Those with large egos are usually not the best players, if they are then mostly they are boring to be around.
deaconmark12 2 years ago
Not a whole lot of difference, really. If you were to record with them, especially with other musicians, then apply eq, delay, and compression I doubt the difference would be discernable... or even just using a Fender Twin or Polytone at different settings in a "blindfold test".

My vote is on the D'Angelico. Clearly that's his favorite too, he got lost in enjoying the guitar and couldn't even play it the song!

Wow cool vid.! They all sound very acoustic except for the Elferink. That sounds like a "jazz" guitar.Did you mic the speaker.Maybe that will help. But the Elferink sounds good.Campellone sure does make some beauties though!
phenixdagemini 2 years ago
Very strange - on the last axe it all went out of sync and appears like someone else is actually playing...
HardRockLeadGuitar 2 years ago
The D'Angelico wins! The 1st two guitars (not sure what brand) tie for 2nd place. All sounded great, however those three sound best to me.
that is my two-cents.

that d angelico is tooooooooooooooooooooooo svveet!!!!!!!!!

We are getting lot of the acoustic sound from the mic so I don't know what the pure sound from the amp is.

like the title says its a guitar comparison, not an amp comparison...

The DA sounds the best to my taste with the DA pickup. I had the experience to play the DA New yorker with the DA pickup. I will never forget it. I play a new DA and very soon will be installing a DA guitar mic

It's not Dee-Angelico.
It's Dan-Gelico.
Geez.

They´re all great guitars with different characters and tgive any one of them to me and I´ll be so happy! If I had to choose it would be the Campelloni.
Nice played, especially the start overs on the D´Angelico :)

They all sound nice... BUT my favorite was that D'Angelico sound .WOW!!! JD knew how to make a guitar !!!
SIRONEDRAGON 2 years ago
What a cool comparison, but playing is less about the guitar than the person playing it. Benson played my strat and still sounded great. A great guitar player would sound great on any of these guitars.

Hi!,
what sounds good about the DÁngelico, besides being a great guitar, IS the pickup, DeArmond M1100 rhytm chief, the best pickup for jazz ever made.

we can all see you like the d'angelico the most :) and that definetly makes it sound the best of all :)
it really is about your personal taste. what makes you feel best will sound best in your hands.

Hi. I listened very well.
Do you have a lot of exepreance to play and have archtop guitars?
If you have under 5,000$, which one you want buy? and If you have 7,000$?
younwoo7 3 years ago
there's differences, on each guitar, but all sounds great. many people have what they didn't gained probably if he couldn't hear any differences, he's one of them... ahahahah
thanks for share this interesting video.
FrancescoBonfanti77 3 years ago
You have a beautiful collection. Thanks for sharing and doing the comparison. They all sound fantastic... yet with some differences.I think (as some other do) the D'Angelico sounds slightly better than the rest... perhaps a tad fuller in it's sound.

Why does he need so many expensive guitars?
All sound the same to me...
I have just an L-5, and I'm very happy!
bullyflea 3 years ago
its kind of like the old saying in chess "dont move 'till you see it"...well if you cant hear the difference, there is no need for you to have more than your l-5
gatemouthbrown 3 years ago
That's right. You do not need to rephrase what I'm saying.
For me using one good guitar to produce beautiful tone is enough.
Having many expensive guitars seems to just please yourself. You can't rely on YOU to create good tone.
bullyflea 3 years ago
i didnt re-phrase your question...i answered it.he obviously CAN hear the difference.if you can't you might as well be playing a silvertone/harmony.everything makes a difference in tone.i.e wood, metals plastics..ect.ect..do you really think people buy guitars just so they can say they have them?...come one...
gatemouthbrown 3 years ago
I had several guitars at one point in my life. I acquired my custom made Ribbeke arch top 8 years ago and from that point on the rest stayed in the closet. (Including an L-5 and a Johnny Smith Gibson). I sold all of the other guitars except my Taylor 815 flattop. Life is much simpler now. :)
Check out a few of my uploads and you can hear the Ribbeke. There are allot of master craftsmen making wonderful instrument. It all come down to each individual's ears.

It is beneficial to play all of your Hollow body guitars as much as possible, because "the wood remembers" what is played / resonated through it.
Or at least have them near your amp or stereo when you are playing . My grandfather used to say they need those resonant frequencies in the wood.
Maybe alittle crazy, but a scary thought
that time can be that valuable in aging all acoustic gear
Johnny
PS - loved your last video, you strike me as a purist, thanx for the ideas
johnnyguitarcarson 2 years ago
Johnny,
You are absolutely correct! The wood does remember. I don't know how but it does. If you let an archtop sit without playing it will sound "stiff" when you first pick it up.

Tototwice 3 years ago

Some nice axes. Amazing how much better the D'Angelico sounds than the others though...

Very interesting comparison, and really nice guitars. What is the name of that pickup used on those D'Angelico's again?
cadence440 3 years ago
You should check out the Buscarino Monarch. Went to Mandolin Brothers in NY and it was the best sounding guitar in the room to my ears. (compared to Gibson Johnny Smith, D'agelico excel, D'acquisto, Comins, among others. Very nice collection! The D'angelico sounds the best to me in this video.
ES175jazz 3 years ago
You might have to put the mic near the amp speaker(or maybe you have)...I hear more acoustic...very tricky business. You see... it is not always about the wood as you know-too many factors.

Nice guitars. Could you play "Tequila" these guitars? I gauge how good an archtop is thru the playing of this song. This song really tells a lot about an archtop acoustic.
gretscher 3 years ago
Thanks for this demo. I liked each of them, perhaps the D'Angelico slightly more. I'm thinking of buying one of the new Excel models, like the one you demo'd in another post. Any recommendation on a good Jazz amp under $500?
ntprofman 3 years ago
The Campellone have the most midrange out of them and have more of a focused sound. Was that Elferink single coil? It had a sharper top end, and have a good voice seperation.
That Hollenbeck have a faster decay, and a brighter tone than bass, but had more harmonics complexity.
Still, I prefer the D'Angelico, it had balanced tone on all range and clear harmonics.
