Ireland have lost 2 competitive games from the past 24. Instead of lamenting the points "lost" in Slovakia, the point won out there (and in Moscow) turned out to be huge in the campaign. Armenia and Slovakia played pretty football in Ireland's group, but they'll be watching the tournament from the tv set instead of the football pitch. You win honours by taking your chances and getting results. Results pay the bills, and there will be plenty paid by the time the next tournament comes around.
If you look back at the panel views from the Staunton era, the demand throughout, was of wanting the best players available and an organised team on the pitch. Now Ireland have an organised team playing a successful system that has gone from 11 points off qualification to the European finals and with it, a significant rise in rankings and seedings. Even that's not considered good enough for them these days. Instead of calling results on their merits, they have a "job" to do, as they say.
How come there is absolutely no footage online from RTE of the match and goals in what was a historic occasion? I'm a student filmmaker looking to do a short film based around the playoff. I'm looking for about a maximum of a minutes footage with rte commentary. would anyone know where to find this. Would RTE even help in this matter?
@TheOshman4 Try The Cat Is In The Sack documentary (on my list of uploads) which has RTE snippets of that match. If that's not enough then I think I might have the full match recorded from RTE, let me know if you need it and I'll see what I can do. I usually only upload the studio reaction from RTE, most of the time it's more entertaining than the football itself.
@haughtyjack thanks haughtyjack. I don't think cat in the bag will do because of the pop music thats in it. Need to have an authentic feel to it. I just need the 1st half of the 1st leg and a few bits from the 2nd leg including the goals. I have editing equipment that can tinker with the sound then to give it a live pub feeling for my film. If there was any chance you could upload any of those that would be great. I could download it off youtube then.
@TheOshman4 Ok I've got both matches recorded, just give me a couple of days to record, encode and upload them and then I'll send them over. As you're using them as part of a film you'll probably want better quality than youtube so I'll upload the proper files elsewhere and send you a link to download them once they're ready.
Bruth22 bottom line is the Estonian players lost their heads. Your captain should have been sent off before the handball. He was constantly fouling the whole game. The first sending off should have been a straight red instead of a second yellow. Ye can't blame the ref for all that!
@cejka30 All lies, Piiroja was pushed by someone called Keane, that is why he touched the ball with his hand. It was Irish foul in the first place but counted as a red card for Estonia.
Are you freaking kidding me? The referee was GREAT? Seriously? This game was not between Ireland and Estonia, it was between Estonia and Kassai. The Irish played well, I'll say that. They deserved to win. But the referee was CRAP. One Irish player literally PUSHED an Estonian player, where were his eyes then? Irish played with their hand as well. Twice. Where were his eyes then? Keane pushed Piiroja which resulted him touching the ball with his hand and he got a red card. I hope FIFA saw this.
dunphy still talks as always , one load of shite. who the fuck is he watching? barcelona. the motherland is not blessed with messi and xavi. big jack got the best out of honest talented hardworking men. giovanni is doing the same. why the negativity?
Dunphy's never happy, even after a 4-0 win that virtually guarantees qualification, he still finds room to nitpick. The football wasn't of a Barcelona standard, but when has it ever been in Ireland's history? I'll take whatever system we need to get decent results, although would love to see McCarthy and Coleman given some game time soon. I don't expect any changes to the team for tuesday but hope Trapattoni tries some new players in the next few friendlies.
@haughtyjack Nothing wrong with what Dunphy is saying, it would be much worse if all three were singing their praises finding nothing wrong with what they're doing, at the end of the day he is doing his job. Also, don't forget that Giles and Brady, albeit not the same extent, are often critical of Trapattoni's tactics.
@SpudsAndKimchi True, I'm glad we've got RTE who call it as they see it. Sky and BBC play it safe with their pundits. Even Roy Keane on ITV isn't a patch on Dunphy. I can understand the criticism, it's frustrating to see players like McCarthy and Coleman - who can play proper football - not even on the bench when most of us would like to see them in the starting eleven. Hopefully he'll give some of the youngsters like McCarthy, Coleman, Cunningham, a run out in the friendlies next year.
@bipedalame That's a fantastic way to look at it - We wont contend with the rest of the world playing their style of football - only because they are clearly better than us - Trappatoni and Big Jack both found a way for us to be competitive -
And after all - we are all Irish, why can't we just enjoy the tournament and get behind the lads - As I'm sure the majority of the country will :)
@bipedalame I agree Trap's getting the best out of what he has, but Charlton?? As much as I loved him, he turned one of the most talented group of individual footballers in Europe at the time into a bunch of long ball mullickers. Houghton, Whelan, Aldridge, Townsend, the list goes on. Add to that we had some serious quality at the back with McGrath, Staunton, Big Mick etc. Dont sell us short...
