For the droid x you can get a mount for GPS capabalites with google maps, called the car mount, just use the aux cable plus cigaret lighter adapter and you can get all the gps capablities with out the law breaking
Google Map with Navigation Beta does turn by turn and I think its the best on a phone or portable I've personally use because it use more then GPS it use cell tower as well so quite accurate even in NYC. This is on a HTC Incredible.

Other countries have different setups and in most states and provinces it is illegal to use a cellphone or use a gps, and i meam programming it while driving.
in Israel we have a crowd service waze.co.il , works with your cell phone (smart phones) quite good actually users actively contribute to the db by updating about accidents, police speed traps, road obstacle, you name it - you have predefined icon on the application so if you cross a police trap, for example, you just click the icon and share the info. you can add free text for extra info etc…

then we need all sources, like local new stations, goverment, large companies, and users, ect to contribute to a real time/ almost real time data network, and for rural areas, which usually have traffic jams with accidents, so we need everyone to contribute to a major network, which would be accesible by everyone, then 1: people spend less time in traffic 2: less idling = less carbon emissions, example traffic circles
I got Co Pilot on my iPhone and have signed up to their Live Traffic update feature, but that's because it was half price lol. This is in the UK and we have more CCTV cameras on roads then tarmac!! So I kinda hope it uses information from these for the updates?
If you install a Car PC, you can use Google traffic without having issues. Software like Centrafuse have plugin to incorporate different functions into driving. Google traffic is one of the plugins made for it.
I hate this FastLaneDaily with Alex andJ.F. they keep talking about Crossing the country, from a 5 years ago. Big Deal you can speed but this part of the show Sucks more than an Air intake. Go on the View to flap your gums.
The Google Maps on my Android phone is so accurate that I don't even look at the phone itself and rather just leave it down in a cup holder and I let Stephanie Hawkings tell me exactly where I want to go. I have also found the traffic flow on it to be very reliable and I have double checked that with the local radio reports. Now it may not be an immediate response on the traffic flow data, but its still pretty quick. Maybe not quick enough for a rally, but there are shoulders for that. ;-)
Gotta put my 2 cents in. You guys have a few things wrong
1. Google maps in Android 1.6 and higher has turn by turn voice navigation and voice search built in for free. 2. Many of the android phones out there have car docks or are compatible with universal docks, so the aforementioned navi system could be used legally and safely.
3. Google traffic in Navi mode also has traffic info on road closures, constructions, accidents, and other with points to another source of data not just p2p
I'm sure in a few years the NHTSA will require every car manufacturer to install some type of GPS / black box system in every car built. This way, you'll have millions of cars relaying data back to servers for instant traffic report - "really" real time.
Let me ask this, Why can't we use the GPS's it self, as like a Doppler, and every GPS will give REAL time data feed back, shooting back information to satellites, and from movements of GPS's you can find out the motion of the freeway. or is this already being done? I hope i made sense. These GPS's are on the road and moving and is showing how fast it's moving.
@kellyvtec I think that would be good too, but, if you report back to the satellite how fast you're going you could be mailed a ticket. Or worst yet, any cop that can tap into whats coming up could "clock" you at a certain speed without ever seeing you. Kinda a double edge sword.

HEy in los angeles we have real highway traffic. Also in LA we dont have iphones that work everywhere so some of us pay up for Verizon's $100 + monthy which have VZ Navigator!!!!!!!! I have a droid with google maps and GPS works awesome, it even works in my house. It also seems to always know where traffic is, in and out of the city, and even can use street view with GPS, and it does talk to you and tell you where to go and if you have a car dock its hands free too.

Which gps company do you guys think is the best as far as accuracy and simplicity. I have a Magellan 1700 but havent use it yet. I upgraded from a Magellan 360 and it was pretty good. The only real issue for me was that the car location on the screen sometimes would cause me to miss my turn.
how about just fucking knowing your roads like real men! when ever i use a gps device, it gets me lost or takes me along the LONGEST route. when ever i go on a road trip i ask my dad (who used to be a truck driver) which is the best way & he is a better source. as far as traffic, its impossible to always avoid it, just suck it up.

I was stuck in trafic once near my house on the interstate. now, i was just learning stick, and having an almost toast clutch going up a 15* slope stop&go was hell, so i bounced on the breakdown and got off the exit up ahead. now, on my way home is an overpass over the highway, so i stopped and looked to see what caused the delay. it was a cop, and people were going by at ~20mph. this is TWO MILES from where i first got stuck.

Google Map Navigation on Android has full traffic support and a full featured GPS turn by turn spoken directions. Its still in beta so its not perfect but its pretty awesome.
That was probably the best road testament you've ever produced. 5/5. Personally, I think the future solution will have a hybrid or a mixture of these active networking technologies: a Twitter like, real time posting information to a server for people to access, a maps client like google maps and millions of gps enabled devices that will allow the transmission and access of the data generation like the GPS Apple iOS devices and rivals (and sat navs! =P) great great episode guys! =D
Um, on Android, using Google Maps with Navigation, you DO have turn-by-turn directs, so that partial trumps the issue with needing a co-pilot with Google Maps...
@bottomlayer You Press the Onstar button and you can ask for turn by turn directions from the company with a person there giving you the best routes to get you to your destination.
Interesting stuff about Apple and co turning off data sending back to Google! Alex is right though, Trapster is growing massively! I use it here in the UK on my TomTom (POI's) and I have it on my HTC Desire but haven't really used it due to fear of using up lots of web data (lame, I know), but I'm willing to experiment! Speaking of older Garmin devices, just got myself an old 2610, liking it so far, trying to mount it in a nice place on my dash! Good work guys and great episode!

On topic. Can't the manufacturers of built-in navigation build some sort of network that requires little to no user interaction in order to give feedback about traffic? It is like the iPhone-App, but inherently linked to cars. Also, modern GPS devices already contain a SIM card (e.g. TomTom) that could be used for feedback.
road testement is great you get very little real info because the interupt and circle back to where they started for eight minutes or so very entertaining.

what about actual in-car nav systems? ford sync w/ sirius traffic link works good as far as accurate info on accidents, re-routing around them and its dead accurate about arrival times

GPS systemas should get report for gps units itself, makes the most sense because having 4 units into cars into the same avenue providing speed, and mobility information in real time will make accurate data on real time, and based on a computer software using that data could calculate best routes to avoid traffic

The Google Maps on my Android phone is so accurate that I don't even look at the phone itself and rather just leave it down in a cup holder and I let Stephanie Hawkings tell me exactly where I want to go. I have also found the traffic flow on it to be very reliable and I have double checked that with the local radio reports. Now it may not be an immediate response on the traffic flow data, but its still pretty quick. Maybe not quick enough for a rally, but there are shoulders for that. ;-)

Gotta put my 2 cents in. You guys have a few things wrong
1. Google maps in Android 1.6 and higher has turn by turn voice navigation and voice search built in for free. 2. Many of the android phones out there have car docks or are compatible with universal docks, so the aforementioned navi system could be used legally and safely.
3. Google traffic in Navi mode also has traffic info on road closures, constructions, accidents, and other with points to another source of data not just p2p

I'm sure in a few years the NHTSA will require every car manufacturer to install some type of GPS / black box system in every car built. This way, you'll have millions of cars relaying data back to servers for instant traffic report - "really" real time.

Let me ask this, Why can't we use the GPS's it self, as like a Doppler, and every GPS will give REAL time data feed back, shooting back information to satellites, and from movements of GPS's you can find out the motion of the freeway. or is this already being done? I hope i made sense. These GPS's are on the road and moving and is showing how fast it's moving.

@kellyvtec I think that would be good too, but, if you report back to the satellite how fast you're going you could be mailed a ticket. Or worst yet, any cop that can tap into whats coming up could "clock" you at a certain speed without ever seeing you. Kinda a double edge sword.

HEy in los angeles we have real highway traffic. Also in LA we dont have iphones that work everywhere so some of us pay up for Verizon's $100 + monthy which have VZ Navigator!!!!!!!! Has anyone ever used this! I love it and it is good at telling me how much longer i'll be stuck. and it is smart at voice regognition.

I have a droid with google maps and GPS works awesome, it even works in my house. It also seems to always know where traffic is, in and out of the city, and even can use street view with GPS, and it does talk to you and tell you where to go and if you have a car dock its hands free too.

Which gps company do you guys think is the best as far as accuracy and simplicity. I have a Magellan 1700 but havent use it yet. I upgraded from a Magellan 360 and it was pretty good. The only real issue for me was that the car location on the screen sometimes would cause me to miss my turn.

how about just fucking knowing your roads like real men! when ever i use a gps device, it gets me lost or takes me along the LONGEST route. when ever i go on a road trip i ask my dad (who used to be a truck driver) which is the best way & he is a better source. as far as traffic, its impossible to always avoid it, just suck it up.

I was stuck in trafic once near my house on the interstate. now, i was just learning stick, and having an almost toast clutch going up a 15* slope stop&go was hell, so i bounced on the breakdown and got off the exit up ahead. now, on my way home is an overpass over the highway, so i stopped and looked to see what caused the delay. it was a cop, and people were going by at ~20mph. this is TWO MILES from where i first got stuck.
i will never understand why people sow to 45mph when a cop is around

Google Map Navigation on Android has full traffic support and a full featured GPS turn by turn spoken directions. Its still in beta so its not perfect but its pretty awesome.

That was probably the best road testament you've ever produced. 5/5. Personally, I think the future solution will have a hybrid or a mixture of these active networking technologies: a Twitter like, real time posting information to a server for people to access, a maps client like google maps and millions of gps enabled devices that will allow the transmission and access of the data generation like the GPS Apple iOS devices and rivals (and sat navs! =P) great great episode guys! =D

Interesting stuff about Apple and co turning off data sending back to Google! Alex is right though, Trapster is growing massively! I use it here in the UK on my TomTom (POI's) and I have it on my HTC Desire but haven't really used it due to fear of using up lots of web data (lame, I know), but I'm willing to experiment! Speaking of older Garmin devices, just got myself an old 2610, liking it so far, trying to mount it in a nice place on my dash! Good work guys and great episode!

I like this show a lot. It's something different and I like to listen to the opinions of others on order to form my own.
On topic. Can't the manufacturers of built-in navigation build some sort of network that requires little to no user interaction in order to give feedback about traffic? It is like the iPhone-App, but inherently linked to cars. Also, modern GPS devices already contain a SIM card (e.g. TomTom) that could be used for feedback.

GPS systemas should get report for gps units itself, makes the most sense because having 4 units into cars into the same avenue providing speed, and mobility information in real time will make accurate data on real time, and based on a computer software using that data could calculate best routes to avoid traffic
