I have two Shamrock R2R tapes, but they're not in a light green box, it has a dark green box which was regular. As for the black reel tape. They're not that great! I tried it on my 1963 Sony TC-600 and it sound bad due to some squeaking problems. All are black tape. I have plenty of Scotch Dynarange series R2R tapes and it does look okay, but it has a shiny coated black tape on there. Never squeaked and it plays good.
I just won a Sony TC755 10" RtR from ebay. Should get it next week. This is my very first 10" RtR. I got some 10" reels from GW for a few bucks for the lot. Can't wait to see what's on them. I could have wound them down to 7"m vyr U've been wanting a Pioneer or Teac 10incher. They cost too much, so I settled for a good deal on a Sony, a very good deal. I'll have five reels to start with. I see those hub adaptors are mucho $. This will be my first direct drive Sony.
I have a TC 654-4 Quadradial. 3 motor but not reversable and 4 individual channels. I've lost a channel. I've been told that the source/ tape and record/play switches might be dirty or coroded. If you have any suggestions, please let me know. I love the machiene but it is unuseable. Thanks for any help.
@youthnotlost It might be a dirty record-play switch or a dirty switch that turns the record function on. On mine, the switches that turn the record function on (that lights up the red light in the corner of the VU meter) was very dirty. Spraying them with WD-40 fixed it.
@CassetteMaster Thanks for the reply. I'm a little hesitant to take the machiene appart. I've been a bit clumsy working with electronics as of late. I lived to do it in my youth, but the vision is weaker and the fingers aren't as cooperative. I think I might be able to at least try spraying the switches. My brother, umajunkcollector, also agrees about the WD 40. Thanks for the tip. Keep up the vids. I really enjoy them and have learned a lot from you.
I never found a Radio Shack cassette or reel tape that wasn't junk. I was on vacation this summer and needed a blank cassette and bought some of their latest cassettes for sale and they still suck. What happend to that company, they used to have good stuff in their stores? ...."Radio Shack, You got questions, We got cell phones"
@margaretsville Hahahah!! I liked that last comment; very true. They used to have so much more electronic components and even all kinds of replacement speakers on the top shelf! But of course time went by and we were all punished for living in this day. "The curse of today: less and less electronics like that readily and conveniently available." Sad sad sad...
@margaretsville I sure miss Lafayette, Heathkit, Olson Electronics Allied Radio and the other electronics stores that Radio Shack put out of business with their cheapo inferior junk. Remember Switchcraft?
Last I knew RCA Shack used crappy Memorex tapes.
Oh and another thing, doing away with the catalogs - we NERDS like our catalogs! I rarely go to the Shack anymore, have to use ebay or mail order now. When the Shack went online, they LOST many customers, the catalog was a draw into the store.
Very nice Sony reel-to-reel! Also the speakers sound very good! Too bad the TEAC isn't that good.
Most of the Shamrock products are junk, but they had some series of tapes that will work. I once read somewhere that the Shamrock tapes are made by Ampex. The tape material was just trash that was not good enough to become an Ampex labeled tape.
That is a nice piece of equipment. How much did it cost? Never heard of those speakers. Nice speakers though. Now all you need is some official reel to reel tapes. Those can get pricey. Most mom and pop record stores have reel to reel tapes. Why is that tape so precious?
ha! I have a FULL CASE of Shamrock tape just like that.. You described perfectly all the problems I had with it 10 years ago, I can imagine it is much worse by now. Have you ever tried baking old tapes in the oven to rejuvenate them? I've never done it myself. Those bad ones might be good practice tapes.
@CassetteMaster Baking is only a short-term fix, but good enough for a few plays. Mainly a skill to have for that time when you want to dub something that only exists on one old tape, but you can't because it keeps gumming up the heads.
Very cool-looking machine and sounds good too! I used to have a bunch of Radio Shack Concertape cassettes before and the quality on them sucks so I just got rid of them.
The record switch may need some cleaning. It can cause lost of quality sound (distorted) or making one channel weaker then the other. Keep up the cool vids!
@CassetteMaster oh, i see, you can still buy brand new heads for it, mine used to work perfect, now it has a small quirk but it dosen't affect the sound. Mine sounds perfect.
@CassetteMaster does your mom bitch at you for having all of that cool stuff because my mom yells at me every time i get ONE 8 track and you have wayyy more stuff

@jrcstudios I never tried baking. But if it would restore those tapes to USABLE condition then it would sure be worth it. I have a bunch.

I always wondered what widescreen camera that is you're using. I'd buy something like that.

@themasterofmovies The Teac? It works, but the heads are worn and one channel's treble is not as good as the other (I hate that).

@themasterofmovies I'm sure they're too expensive.
CassetteMaster 1 year ago
@CassetteMaster i think it is around 135 for both play and simul-sync heads (60 for 1, 50 for the other and prob tax and shipping)
