Pretty Solid Bud, I fly Real Helis myself too! I Love having the X plane Sim and Joystick at home between flight days! Although I want to get real collective and pedal controls! Love it though.. I use the basic Logitech joystick with 12 buttons and throttle function.. Its pretty decent
I have an I-mac 27" and would like to know what joystick to buy for X-Plane that i'm also just about to buy, I fly these helicopters for real and fancy a go on the computer ones too. (check out my videos)
I just got COD4 but apparently there is no other gamepads available so using the magic mouse and keyboard.
@colin5016 Do some research on Saitek's website,They have a few models out with the twist wrist stick which makes it much easier to fly the helis, hope this helps..BTW you will love X-plane once you get used to it.Thanks for the comment.
@GMSamuelRhine Try the Dodosim JetRanger for FSX. Its a whole new ball game. I have a couple of videos on my channel where you can see it in action. The developers are doing great things with helicopters in FSX now they know what can be achieved with it, just like consoles really, the games get better as the developers find out more and more.
Practice, practice and more practice...The right joystick makes all the difference in the world too..Of you are flying rotorcraft you NEED a joystick with the twist wrist actionto act as th Anti-Torque Pedals.
Btw, I have the R44 POH in front of me right now, page 5-6. It basically tells you to keep between 5 and 10ft until 40kts, but at that height you will hit the ground before you can level the ship.
Nothing wrong with the profile, I meant to say (damned iPad). I used to think the same as you, until I learnt better from some VERY experienced ppl, who'd seen the consequences of the zipping along the ground profile.
@Bugger90 There's definitely nothing with that take-off profile. Bringing the speed up close to the ground is actually a lot more dangerous than is commonly believed. I fly several helicopter types including R44, btw.
Don't misunderstand guys, I'm not here for bittching, but visually, X-plane really sucks, these urban textures are simply ugly. I appreciate that flight dynamics occassionally can be better, but still the more complex FSX addons are still by far superior. Sadly, FSX however very bad at helicopters. Both platforms have strength and weaknesses I believe.
Have you ever seen the H/V-diagram for the R44? Ofcourse my perspective may be off, because it's a sim, and i fly in real life, but you seemed to accelerate at a pretty high altitude during takeoff. Accelerating lower to the ground would make your chances of survival in case of engine failure higher.
I think you'd love it,I was getting extremely frustrated transitioning from FSX heli's to X-plane but once I got it down, it's a great helicoptr simulator, you get all of the actual dynamics of rotorcrft where FSX lacks hard.
@davisbrettvain you need to feather the collective(basically the helicopter equivalent of throttle) to maintain a hover and make it go where you want it to, make sure you go in the settings and change throttle to collective on your joystick, unless you are using the keyboard for power then change the 'f' buttons to the original settings and use F3 and F4 as the collective
You did really well, maybe it's just me but in the next video maybe lose the music? I like to hear the helicopter engine in X-Plane.. the sounds are so realistic! Or maybe mix a backing track with the engine audio. Just a suggestion! Really well done controlling the sim!
The sad thing is that I installed a soundpack for this helo and it sounds AWESOME, but for some reason whenever I record X-plane videos they don't record the sound.
Well you did an awesome job flying it and I look forward to more of your videos. You have a fan here in Australia! I look forward to more! Regards, Craig
Nice vid! I like it! You can even do more exciting stuff when you change the pilots view-perspective sometimes! Not always the same angle straight ahead!

true i like the planes better in FSX but the flight dynamics of the helicopters suck.

I use X-plane too, i'm still having trouble making flailed quick stops and hovering.
I blame my joysticks resistance spring, it's to strong, takes strong forces to make minor movements.

@motokid032 Thinking of swapping too, does it include flapback and yaw when you increase airspeed? :)

@motokid032 you should make a heli tutorial
i can fly but not land or hover. I can't stop going forward
and i do have a joystick
