@GeFlixes You could say so. They worked together with James LaBrie on his solo projects and he also sang on some of their songs as a guest musician. Dream Theather was also the first thing that popped up in my mind listening to this, even though it's still quite distinctive.
@GeFlixes Other influences may or may not include Queensryche (singing style), Yngwie Malmsteen and Symphony X. That said I think of these guys more as a prog rock band.
@missing4 It's actually good to see some females listening to Shadow Gallery as well as males. I was actually listening to Shadow Gallery with a 17-year-old girl this morning.
This music is revolting. I used to listen to this type of music...don't know what in the name of the good lord was wrong with me. Thank God for the aging process.
With a risk of being flamed by the hardcore fans of this band...I love the new album. The new singer is better imo. Their old singer was great, but a bit too mellow. Shame he died though. :(
shadow gallery is a breat underrated band. dream theater at least is a little unknown in mainstream but shadow gallery almost nothing and this band is really great.
Not to mention no live plays, making it harder for them to gain some fame. Just recently they started to play live. But mainstream isn't all bad. Some bands do good with attention. Personally, if I love it and feel its something I can listen for ears to come and then some, its great. Iron Maiden has gotten lots of attention and they are still strong, with a new album coming up too. R.I.P. Mike Baker

Prog for their superb compositions, the times, the structure and evolution of their masterpieces
Heavy for their guitar sound, the clearest example is CLIFFHANGER! one of the most wonderful heavy solos that i've ever heard, hardly impressive for tecnique and expression.

wow what a song. im new to this band and ive been listenening to progresive for years and i never listned to this band before :c what a shame. I think i found another band to add with my favourites =)
Sorry for everything i said, i dont say this band is bad i just dont understand why it is prog, for me it is much more closer to power metal like sonata arctica, then progressive metal, just compare the voice !!
Well maybe i just have no idea of what progressive metal is, i always though it was somthing like complex compositional structures, odd time signatures, and a NON-Power voice (listen the band tool).
Power and Prog Metal can sound the same, so when it comes down to similar sounding bands, you can separate power and prog metal bands by lyrical content. Power metal bands sing about fantasy and things of more of a thematical nature. Prog on the other hand tends to be more spiritual and conceptual. Prog bands tend to sing about things such as life and death, spirituality, social issues and philosophical concepts.
Prog is an art form. As such, its structures are unorthodox. And themes can vary for every artist.
I.e. Beyond Twilight albums are generally centered around a fiction. And can be dissected as albums of inner reflections of madness.Tool on other hand, focuses on varied issues. Some spiritual, some political and everything in between.
Prog's sound can be anything.
Saying that SG "sounds" like power metal is understandable. Ignorant, but still understandable.
@Geshien Except lyrical themes do not a genre make. Shadow Gallery is definitely prog., based on their instrumentation and utilization of abstract compositions, although to the untrained ear it can be difficult to discern. Prog's sound is diverse, because what makes a band prog is in the instrumentation.
@Geshien Remember, too, that Pink Floyd is considered prog rock by many. Whether you agree or not, you can understand why. I think for Floyd, it has mostly to do with their tendency toward concept albums, which in itself challenges mainstream tastes to a certain degree. I think their contribution to prog lies mostly in that conceptual flare they have, among other things.
MoodyBlues (¬ JUST cause in 1967 they used an orc., & set the ball rolling) have been called prog; maybe for similar reasons as PF. Unconventional structures, odd uses of sound that seem to imply a conceptional approach. PF has a *vibe* that leans in a 'progressive' direction. Psychedelic, in the way some early MB was too. An appeal to the mind, 'inward tending'. Psy., but not (ala Cream) solo GTRist as the focus of a journey. More 'holistic'. Song-thru, not jamming. Not bluesbased, not pop.
@urbsfobilian In a way I agree..They almost pass as prog rock maybe. I like them reguardless but not as much as bands like Canvas Solaris, DGM and Pagan's Mind
@marc4770 - there's lots of power/major chords in power metal, and probably 95% of chords in prog are diminished. I may just be talking out of my ass though, because I'm still fairly new to prog, and I wouldn't know how to play a diminished chord if asked.
@AgentFour 95% of prog is made up off diminished chords? About as true as 95% of power metal is made up off dominant and 7th chords. Diminished is a chord used just like any other - it's not underused as in some genres, on the other hand not overused either.
@DaryRockz08 what!? first, its thrash, not trash, and second what you say is exactly what the op called ignorant. progressive metal is inspired by almost every possible music genre, not just these few!
Most prog metal bands are also inspired by progressive rock, jazz, etc, and not just metal subgenres! also those are not the only metal subgenres that inspire prog, "classic" metal like judas priest, nwobhm like iron maiden are also huge influences. even black metal has some influence on prog :P
@marc4770 1stly progressive metal doesnt mean just dream theater and stuff-like-that. sometimes it means actually GOOD songs filled with emotion NOT just trying to exhibit playing mastery. 2ndly have a listen at "the crusher" from legacy and see if thats power metal to you. cheers
Oh yeah, Rush set the standard by which all prog rock and metal bands shall follow. 2112, The Necromancer, The Fountain of Lamneth, Xanadu, Natural Science, Cygnus X-1, Hemispheres, La Villa Strangiato, Jacobs Ladder=the foundation of prog metal. This is the first time I've ever heard SG, pretty impressive, vocals are a little overt, but that's to be expected.
it is prog but anyway...try fates warning, symphony x, pain of salvation, queensryche, conception, cynic, psychotic waltz, deadsoul tribe, and if u wanna be bold and listen to something new, go for mastodon or even protest the hero. I heard these guys first time in college. One of the most talented bands ever. I had lost the tapes. Its really sad, had so many memories of their songs with my pals amazing gary wenkamp Bendt Allman Mike, thanks for the great music that inspired me and my friends. Your voice lives forever and so do you in our hearts. Guys please listen to the song QUEEN OF THE CITY OF ICE from their title album and ALASKA from Carved In Stone. maybe most of you have already... but nevertheless!
Someone should put up Don't Ever Cry Just Remember; I think it would be good as a tribute to Mike. I only learned about his passing last night and was crushed :( I'd upload a video for it, but have no idea where to begin........Godspeed Mike. You were taken too soon. /m\
holly sh...sad man...RIP...and I was thinking when will the next Shadow Gallery album will be out...His voice and spirit will live through years and years with the magic these guys have made
"Carved In Stone" è il miglio album prog metal insieme a "Images And Words" dei Dream Theater. Non ci posso credere, morire a 45 anni. Non ho parole. Solo un enorme grazie a te, Mike. Ciao fratello. Canta per gli angeli.
The beginning reminds my of "Pull me Under" from Dream Theater.
"This world is spinning around me and
This world is spinning without me and
Every day sends future to past
Every breath leaves me one less to my last"

Devout fan since the first album I am so sad to see him go at such an early age, he will be greatly missed! Such a unique and powerful voice.
Rest in peace

"Carved In Stone" è il miglio album prog metal insieme a "Images And Words" dei Dream Theater. Non ci posso credere, morire a 45 anni. Non ho parole. Solo un enorme grazie a te, Mike. Ciao fratello. Canta per gli angeli.

Such a talent, and a terrible shame for him to be taken away so early.
