I notice that instead of Friday saying "I'm a cop" he changes to "I carry a badge" which he said during the Dragnet revival in the 1960s. Any reason for the change?
When Webb was planning his "Dragnet 1966" TV movie pilot (which was the genesis for the second color series, but was "shelved" until January 1969- minus the "1966" date for obvious reasons), HE decided Joe Friday's rank would revert to "Sergeant", with no explanations whatsoever.
Correct. Only two from the 6th season, one from the 7th season, and two from the 8th season are all that are out there on the many public domain episodes floating around. These later ones sometimes fall flat compared to the earlier ones but I still enjoy them. The 1950's Dragnet is one of the best shows ever and needs an official season by season release. Thanks for posting.
@storrs19 do you know what those episodes are? I do have one you're talking about from the 7th season "The Big War" broadcast April 10, 1958. I believe that one has Chesterfield commercials on the print also. I read there are a total of 59 episodes from the original series in the public domain. Do you know this to be true, and what happened to the others? There is one episode I'd love to find called "The Big Yak". It was broadcast the night i was born, Oct 17, 1957
@mytvmemories The originals are in a vault at Universal I assume since they own the rights to all of Jack Webb's material now. It's a bit confusing as to what is available because many places have the incorrect names on some episodes. I have some on VHS and some on DVD. Same episode with a different title. I've never seen The Big Yak. As far as I know it is not available to the public.
@storrs19 I see a lot of renaming too, and its quite frustrating, as well as dishonest when selling the videos. I haven't checked the public domain site in awhile, but last night I found some episodes not posted there before. "The Big Children" from season 3, and "The Big Deal" from season 5. Although I doubt they're new to public domain, I haven't seen them. They will also be new to You Tube when I post them. Anything info you have is always appreciated
@fromthesidelines I always found it funny how they promoted him to Lieutenant in the original version, then busted him back to Sergeant in the 60's version of the show.

The counterfeit bills scam is the same as the one used in Midnight Run by Jack Walsh and Mardukas at 3:40.

This was the next-to-last episode of the original series, when "Sgt. Friday" was a Lieutenant.
