  • I sure wish someone would try to post the full show again. It was my favorite of all-time.

  • @fluteplayerIN Couldn't agree more.

  • Where was the full show (drill and full performance) of this show? :( It was on youtube for the longest time....

:( that was the ONLY show I've ever liked by Vanguard. Not a huge fan of them.

  • @MrGamingDrummer its not on YT anymore its still on google video : video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4346242620404039862

  • @MrGamingDrummer watch?v=7N40E_MR4k0

  • @elmomustdie. Yeah, back when they were sops and contra's, not trumpets and tubas. Bb has killed the dynamics of corps, now they have to have 150 members and amps to get that sound. Just my opinion, let the flaming begin!

  • I will slap my grandma if she tries to tell me that the Cadets of Eastern Topeka weren't the obvious winners of the 1989 DCI marching band championships.

  • @RCRhythm marchinig band?

  • @RCRhythm You Trollin?

  • if you really should know ya..everyone in top 12 argued....doesnt mean we were right..im VK "89..I would fight to the death who won..but I loved our friendships we made..I was a contra then..we had BD and SC over for drinks and cigars during retreat...little fact not known..field was beautifull that night..2coolvk

  • @MultiEvdawg I loved VK in 89 - Great show

  • @MultiEvdawg VK made the shows fun...and when BD joined the antics...awesome.... youtube.com/watch?v=RjfTswBbBxU

  • I really want to see this group of people come back and do an alumni concert with past/current SCV members! That is something I would pay to see.

  • the trumpet soloists sucked that year

  • @SCV89 heehee lol I was joking, sorry I could have swore that i tried to make it sarcastic

  • @RevHamRules

Just to let you know.....many of us that marched with SCV in 1989 thought Phantom was great that year as well. Just as they are almost every year.

  • @SCV89 Its ok, but I do really enjoy the mellophone baritone duet, and the bari-duet

  • Remember when brass lines PLAYED like they had a pair!!! :D

  • 1989>1988

  • @moakes2011 phantom 89>scv 89

  • how can the camera withstand this power

  • The '88 Blue Devils got hosed!!!! No one elses show was even close

  • owhh i had the full perfomance but i don know what happened it the screen became upside down =( best performance and the music is just fantastically performed. Perfecto!

  • this show took SCV 2 years to perfect. its a really good show though

  • best perforance evvvvvver

  • i am obsessed w/phantom and this is amazing!!!!!!!! I love it!

  • excellent work!

  • Jen Swanek for the win. Thats my cymbal tech right there

  • gorgeous.

  • makes me cry, just AWSOME!

    Love You SCV!!

  • vanguard

  • I love this show. I marched with the Edmonton Strutters in 1988-89. This was the best show.

  • PR was robbed in 1989. SCV was robbed in 1988.

  • I wouldn't say PR was "robbed". SCV and Phantom were pretty damn close IMO

  • agreed, but I do think PR did absolutely amazing with new world.

  • @svolypet Not in Brass. Phantom was at least 0.5 better with horns. SCV splatted and blatted its way thru this retread.

  • Yes,...somebody speaks the truth. In 1988, it was the Scouts 35th anniversery and so for some reason they were given the championship--affirmative action for DCI that year. In 1989, Phantom should have won, but there were politics involved. In particular, people associated with Phantom had outed the 1975 Muchachos for transgressions of DCI rules. So, 1989 was pay back.

  • i was in the backstands for Madison @ finals and i'll never forget the crowd response for them, They won and they deserved it. And on the 89 Phantom tip, as much as i loved Phantom Regiment too, SCV had it.

Do you really think something from 75 had an effect on 89. C'mon now!!!!

  • I really like the SCV show in '89, too. I marched PR snare that year and we really were better.

Regarding 75, some people will just not let somethings go. As irrational as it seems, I do think the '89 show was stolen.

You probably think that the Scouts deserved the crown in 1988, yes? Do you really think that they would have won if it hadn't been there 35 anniversary? Clearly, it was a political win. There is no way that show was better than our Romeo and Juliet. That line sucked!

  • there were about 4 shows that could have won...but 3 did not...madison had some good GE and visual...and the second half was NEAR FLAWLESS...if there is ANY reason to doubt there win, it is based on the FIRST HALF of the show....

...as far as a MATHPROOF, what premises do you base your conclusion that PR was better than, SCV?

either way, 1989 Cadets DESTROYED ALL lines in 1989... the dust Still HAS NOT SETTLED...Jareed's Meaty rolls on BASS are still ringing in peoples ears!

    RR RR Rreww

  • I'll answer you tomorrow. I have a family function today.

    ~Cheers

  • I would say no to that, this is the highest scoring show in drum corp ever till today, hasent been beaten but has been tied

  • That is not true. It was the highest scoring show at the time. It has since been eclipsed by both the Cadets and Cavaliers.

  • And now, (sigh) the Blue Devils...

  • Nope. Cadets and Cavaliers both got a 99.15

    Blue Devils just scored 99.05

  • this was when santa clara truly still kicked ass. thank you so much for posting this video!! what a sound... my god.... !!!

  • its the G bugle, my friend. you just cant beat it.

  • Ah, G bugles.

  • And if im not mistaken Star took high drums in semi-finals.

  • Is this a Fred Sanford book (percussion wise)?

  • Not Fred Sanford book. If im not mistaken I believe Ralph Hardimon was the man back then.

  • Jesus Christ low brass

  • Comment removed

  • question. right before the ending of the opener, the tubas do something that they have to move their left hand to the back of the horn. where u guys moving slides or something?

  • where at on the time?

  • at 3:44

  • Looks like they had to make a tuning adjustment for one of the 'music of the night' chords.

  • I believe that the Contras that they are playing on are the "old" King 2 Valve/Slide horns.

These had valves 1 & 2, and a slide that when pulled out like that lowered the pitch, enough so that it was equivalent to the amount of tubing added by pressing a third valve

  • I like this music

the music from the phantom of the opera is beautiful and mysterious does it matter if they did it twice, its beautiful music.

  • Awesome show. Not the best in my opinion...top 5 on my list. They edged out phantom with the guard and the chair trick. I still like Phantom's show better but this was a legendary one as well. What a year!

  • The show certainly had ticks, but I'm not so sure the guard and the chair trick propelled them to first. SCV did well in the GE and Performance categories. I think score-wise, their percussion made a huge difference. Their colorguard actually got 5th place.

  • I havent heard this music in over 19 years and what memories does this bring back to hear it again. The best DCI show ever.

  • I first watched this performance on the DCI special on PBS live in 1989. I recorded it on VHS, and about three years ago the tape finally broke from the 100+ times I probably watched it over the past 15 years. This is the first time I ever had the opportunity to hear the warmup, and it makes my heart skip a beat as well. No doubt the most amazing and unforgetable show in the history of DCI. The emotion put into this performance will last many lifetimes.

  • Back when Vanguard had one hell of a hornline.

These days, it just isn't the same. :[

  • I can't find the field show online!

  • Try myspacetv they have it there

    search it!!

  • Being a former member of this corps, this is what drives us current members. This corps history, tradition, passion is unlike any other place.

As for the errors in the show, there hasn't been a show where I have made atleast a thousand errors.

  • Phantom should have won. New World Symphony....WOW! Outstanding! And I'm a long time Santa Clara groupie. It's all fixed anyway.

  • Talk about that somewhere else please.

  • goosebumps

    =D

  • Haha gotta love 89's follow up of 88... btw the did get screwed in 88. Ownage

  • Absolutely amaaazing

  • And that was just to name a few... I didnt even get to Madison Scouts, who have played Rhapsody in Blue, Ballet in Brass, Malaguena, and Strawberry Soup half a dozen if not more times... But none the less Phantom of the Opera was still a kick-ass show.

  • To every member of SCV 89... I watched that PBS broadcast alone, after something really terrible had happened to me... that night's performance reminded me about everything good and vibrant in life. I've watched it dozens of times, and know every "tick", but the imperfections don't matter. PR was great that night, but you won because of the passion. That night was something special. Thank you so much for your heart and your talent; that night in KC is immortal. {hugs}

  • b4 phantom

  • Past the point of no return

  • wat is the song that they opend up in

  • Past the Point of No Return

  • SCV- Always an imressive corps. So much charisma and intensity in their performances. I'm seriously considering auditioning...

  • yo bro? did you march? if so, where? did you win DCI? If so, when? Hey 24lancelot, you too on if you marched?..the choice was up to GR to do it again, and a good one at that. Yes, the show was not the cleanest, but it produced GE ( do you know what that means?) and the horn line was second to Phantom's which was the second loudest horn line I have ever heard, next to 1987, which I was a part of as well. seems like you are not a brass player or former band corps member..figures..if so..u r sorry!

  • former band corps? LMMFAO@U!

  • GE = General Effect, no?

    GR = Gail Royer, no?

  • We had a 98.8 not a 98.9 and REALLY you are such an IDIOT!!!!!!!!! If you don't like our CHOW, our spacing and our Euph's as you put it, then please get back to watching your kiddie porn!!!! Diagonal is a big word! Did you have to look that up before you posted it?

  • Don't get so defensive, he certainly has a point. It's a classic show, but it was dirty compared to today's standards. Either way, you guys did a great job so calm down.

  • what the hell? this was a really great show, and plus it was like almost 20 years ago, do you really need to be arguing over this? just enjoy the performance.

  • I wish they didn't do the same show 2 years in a row, either. Nice way to get a "head start" on the competition. It reminds me of a jr. high school in our area that does the same tune every year in a parade and they always top score. I met a band member and said, "must be nice that you don't have to memorize the tune the following year". She said, "yeah, but the 7th graders have to learn a new tune!". I told her, "so does every other band". LOL. Oh, well...JMPO.

  • alot of corps used to march the same show... for example cavaliers did planets like 3 times

  • In 3 consecutive years? Sorry, but you're going to have to back that up with the years. I know they did The Planets in '85 and '95. In '86, they played Mars, but nothing else with Holst. The rest was Canzona and Korean Folk Song.

As for "alot of corps...", who else?

  • I didnt say they did it 3 years in a row... Blue Devils '74 '75 '76 '78 Legend of the One-Eyed Sailor... Blue Devils '80 '81 Ya Gotta Try... Blue Stars '73 '74 El Cid... Bluecoats '87 '88 Autumn Leaves... Cadets '80 '81 Elks Parade and Fire Dance... Cadets '84 '87 Appalachian Spring... Cavaliers '82 '83 '84 Pines of Rome... Cavaliers '80 '81 Sing, Sing, Sing and Softly as I leave you... Cavaliers '72 '74 '75 Over The Rainbow... Crossmen '96 '97 Birdland... Crossmen '80 '81 Spanish Fantasy...

  • It was the same show theme, yes... but the same show, no... if you actually listen, instead of bagging on it, you'd hear that 88 and 89 hardly played the same music from phantom at all except for a few select excepts and pieces. And as for doing it "2 years in a row" you say that like it was the only time that has ever been done... take a look back at every corps show theme from the 80's and there was rarely a year where a corps did something completely different from the year before.

  • Sorry, didn't know you were offended so easily. Star, look at their rep in the 80s. Looks pretty different to me. Cavies in '81 then '82. Completely different.

But, getting back to "the same music". Didn't both shows play Music of the Night, Angel, Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again and Track Down This Murderer? Let's be honest. The reason SCV went with Phantom an extra year was because they were tired of having 4 straight runner-up finishes and this was an easy way to get a head start...true?

  • Not true... Scv has never been preoccupied with winning. 7th or 1st, its about putting forth a quality performance. But thats beside the point, corps like scv, bd and phantom were repeating show themes and repetoire from year to year all the time. Channel One Suite, Festive Overture, Sparticus... and of course Phantom of the Opera. I can't be sure why Gail chose to do phantom again, but i would guess that he thought that Scv could give the crowd a better, more emotional performance with phantom

  • Whether it actually was better than 88 or not... 1989 Vanguard will always be the show that highschool kids from around the country say "I want to do that" to... I know thats what it was for me... And not to knock phantom's 89 show, one of my favorites as well, but people that complain about who won and who didnt really don't understand what people in drum corps perform for... and its not for a score on a piece of paper from 9 judges

  • SCV '89 reminds you of a Jr. High School band? Anyways, I'm not so sure they got a head start. Was the drill the same? Was the percussion and brass music the same? Were the visuals the same? Did every member return? Only one bass drummer came back from '88; I'm sure more sections had that same sort of turnover.

  • Please learn to read. SCV reminds me of a Jr. High School band IN OUR AREA THAT DOES THE SAME TUNE EVERY YEAR. Notice what tunes WERE the same from one year to the next. Music of the Night, Angel, Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again and Track Down This Murderer.

JMO, but I would have rather seen a fresh start.

  • Yeah your right because every year since they just done Phantom right? Are you gonna rip on Phantom Regiment for doing Spartacus again? If you are gonna rip on SCV for doing a SIMILAR show then you have to discredit PR's show because they did Spartacus before right? I bet if you try every DCI fan would rip you apart because this show and Spartacus were top 10 DCI shows IN HISTORY

  • "Yeah your right because every year since they just done Phantom right?" Did I say that? No. I said they did it 2 years in a row. Please read.

"then you have to discredit PR's show because they did Spartacus before right?" Did they do 80% of the same music from the year before when they got runner-up and thought it was the only way they could get a jump start?

"this show and Spartacus were top 10 DCI shows IN HISTORY". I'm sorry, who decided that?

  • Fighting on YouTube... really? Whether they played it twice in a row or not it sounds amazing. Phantom sounded amazing this year. Congrats to the corps, they worked hard for this whether they had done it before or not.

  • Thank you so much for posting this

  • So glad somebody posted this. Very cool to see it again. I had totally forgotten that we pulled out the parachute at the end. That's the only time all season we did that in a standstill.

  • You guys are amazing. Just amazing. Wish I'd marched in '89. I'm humbled just to have been a member when I was. Thanks for bringing back some great memories.

  • They need to have a reunion performance of this. Same people, same music... same horns? =P

  • the question below is meant for scv89

  • The greatest corp of all time... 1989 Vanguard. Screw the Blue Devils!

  • hell ya! I would say screw the blue but I did march with them 1/2 a yr....i wish SCV would get the players back

  • This gave me chills.. Ive seen it over and over again.. still gets me every time.

  • Cool to watch Murray Gusseck (Center left) in action at 18 years of age. To bad that huge head is blocking my view of Jim Casella on 3rd bass.

  • What were all the contras doing at 3:47? Were they pressing in a rotor or something?

  • We had to use our kick slide to play one of the notes in the chromatic run. (Remember we were play 2 valve bugles back then.) Our arms go back as we extend the slide and then back in again to play the next note (without the slide). If you were up close, you would have heard a slight "clack" as the slide came back in.

  • SCVContra89, this is the bari soloist. yeah, you know who I am. What's up man?!

  • Yo! Dude man. How are you?... Senor Phantasma De'l Opera. Can you believe it's been almost 20 years?

(this is Brad from Texas btw...) I sent you a message on here a few days ago.

  • I'm the 4th one from the right in this video, by the way.

I actually had this entire victory concert INCLUDING Gail conducting us playing "Clowns" before we played the show. But in a rediculous stroke of bad luck, my brother borrowed my parents' video camera right after DCI and recorded over the entire tape from DCI week.

  • 6) Then perform in 30-35 shows in the summer in front of thousands of people, with up to 40,000 people attending finals. Do that without making a single mistake in your solo throughout the entire season and I will give you my name and home address and you can come knock on my door and we will personally discuss this face to face. Good Luck!!!

  • hear hear!!!! I second you on that. John S., if this is you, hell yeah!!! tell em like it is!

  • This is not John S., if you know him, then you know he was the one playing the solo in the opener. I haven't seen him in quite a while. I hope he is doing well!! This is P.J.

  • You don't need to explain yourself to anyone. do you know why? You have a Championship Ring!

If they don't understand that, then that's too bad for them. Some just cant understand the long road we have to take to get to that last performance. I've been there man. The only difference between us is that I wore BLUE.

  • 5) I'll make a deal with you. First learn to play the trumpet. Then, if yoo are still young enough, try out for SCV and actually make it. After you have done that, become one of the few individuals who are lucky enough to have the honor of playing a solo for SCV.

  • 4) Trust me, we have known for 18 and a half years that we made mistakes in our solos, and we do not need an unfriendly reminder from someone who wasn't even alive at the time of the performance. I deeply regret that I had an off night and I am sure the other soloist does as well. However, we do not owe you an apology. And we certainly do not owe you an explanation. The only people that we let down, other than ourselves, were our fellow members and the staff of the 1989 Santa Clara Vanguard!

  • 3) It is very easy for you, someone who doesn't even know how to play a brass instrument, to sit there and anonymously criticize me and the other soloist, but those of us who were actually members of the 1989 Santa Clara Vanguard would truly appreciate it if you would keep your negative comments to yourself.

  • Look. I know it was very immature of me to say something like that so for that I apologize.

To be honest the show still brings me to tears and amazes me every single time I see it.

That show, in my opinion, is the best show in existence. I've seen a few other shows that people hail as "the greatest," I respect their opinion but I still regard this as the best ever. No score can tell you otherwise.

No immature teenager should tell you otherwise either, so for that I again apologize.

  • In fact I am honored to argue with the very soloist of SCV 1989, whether you hate me or not.

So I'll say it a third time, you're absolutely right, I'm absolutely wrong. I'm sorry and retract my comment from earlier.

(This whole thing is directed toward SCV89)

  • 2 ) I am the person playing the soprano solo in the ballad and I personally do not appreciate your comments. One day, when you become an adult and are no longer in diapers, you will realize that everyone makes mistakes and anyone can have an off night.

  • there was a question on google video about there being a gap in the drill. One theory was that it was the soprano soloist that was missing, and that the nervousness of the backup was what made the performance "suck" (this is NOT my opinion...) Is that what happened, or if not, what did happen (about the gap, not the solo)

  • We had 2 people from England who falsified their passports and birth certificates. We found out about the first one in between prelims and finals at DCI East in Allentown, PA just 2 weeks before DCI finals. Someone at the rehearsal knew him from England and informed the staff of his real age. He was a snare drummer. He was kicked out immediately and we finished the year with 9 snares instead of 10.

  • Then the day before DCI Quaterfinals it happened again. Lee, also from England, played french horn. He was kicked out immediately as well. If we had found out 1 day later, we would have been disqualified. The staff decided that it would be impossible to close the hole at that point in the season, so instead, we marched with a hole. And the size of the hole did not change throughout the entire show. Again, the other soloist and myself just had an off show!

  • thanks! it might have cost you 0.4 points and the highest score ever in DCI (compared to today, it was still highest back then. 2002 cavies and 2005 cadets beat it recently), but it's better than losing everything...

  • To SCV89

Okay so this is the second time I've tried to post this.

Look, I didn't mean to insult you at all and if I did (which by the looks of it, I did) I'm sorry.

The fact is that I was extremely stupid to post a negative comment like that.

The truth is this show inspires me, and utterly amazes me every single time I see it. It is just, in my opinion, THE best show of all DCI history.

  • Some other shows like The Zone brag the rights of a 99.15, (but they're different judges and different people every year).

Nevertheless I digress. I again would like to say to you sir, that I am sorry. I shouldn't have disgraced you for you were a good enough player to make it into SCV. I am just honored to have met (online) the soloist from the famed 1989 Santa Clara Vanguard.

  • I was just being a stupid teen with a big mouth. Don't ever let that bring you down from who you are and the great things you've done.

Whether you accept it or not, I would like to let you know I am sorry.

  • right on JazzMan. I am the baritone soloist from 89, and personally knowing SCV89, he is not trippin anymore, I hope! I agree, 89 is the best show ever!!! Are you marching anywhere? Can you play loud with good tone and march and do it also ?go to SVC, they need loud players now. It just does'tn sound the same man!!!

  • whoa dude.

props on the show. my friends and i are always amazed when we see it. definitely...

unfortunately im not marching this year. I just finished marching season in our high school marching band where I was given the privilege to conduct the show. Hopefully i can learn a brass and try for SCV next year (although it will be difficult what with college and all)

  • This video inspires me to join SCV at one point in my life, even though I dont know how to play brass or percussion.

all I can say is this is an AMAZING show, and WTH?! to the trumpet soloist! He sucked in the actual performance and NOW he hits the notes.

  • There is another posting on here of them playing this on the standard horns and its just not the same. Only two valves?

  • 1) In 1989, drum corps were still playing 2 valved bugles which were in the key of G, not B flat like today's instruments. Therefore, the soloist you are referring to was actually playing a soprano bugle, not a trumpet. And for the record, there were 2 different soprano soloists. One in the opener and another in the ballad (see video #2). Both had an off night in the "actual performance."

  • Finally, we can listen to "Point of No Return" warm-up

    from the frontside.

  • Great!

  • I freakin love the note that they hit at 1:37

    o_o It's amazing!!!

  • awesome :]

  • Check out the plates! They're just having a good ol' time, aren't they?
