  • if you forget to get off at the top you just go down on the left side...you wouldnt flip backwards or anything like that. the way a Paternoster works is similar to a ferris wheel....at wone point your going up another point you are going down...i live in america and we dont have them...i just this it would end badly if we did lol

  • O.O does it go around at the top??? that is crazy....

  • What is you trip up and fall and it keeps going up? A Final Destination type death?

  • shit this is dangerus

  • I'm wondering who came up with this death-lift concept?

  • I last went over the top on that thing thirty five years ago. Feeling old.

  • scary.

  • this is so dangerous xD, what if someone trips and does some final destination shit

  • i now have anxiety about something I'll never ride.

  • when you ride to the top do you flip upside down?

  • @AnonymousKdub Nope, once it reaches the top it starts moving sideways and then straight down, so you always stay upright, but that'd be pretty funny but dangerous if it flipped you lol

  • it looks like some sort of museum display for humans

  • what if you're on a wheelchair?

  • @xAbre1200 Handicapped people are not welcome.

  • @xAbre1200 This is a god question. I'm guessing they shouldn't use it. But is that am emergency stop button in the middle? Maybe they could push that, turn around and roll in it backwards so they'd be facing the right way to get out. Maybe.

  • I wonder how many Paternoster deaths per year there are..

  • my school needs this

  • I just had to ride it last yr when I was a fresher lol

And I stayed in it to go "over the top" :-p

  • paternosters always stay upright dipshit

  • We have these in the parliament building here in Copenhagen, as well as at the town hall for Frederiksberg municipality. I was a little freaked out the first time I tried one, but they're quite fun :-)

  • From wiki: Today, in many countries the construction of new paternosters is no longer allowed because of the high risk of accidents (people tripping or falling over when trying to enter or alight). Five people were killed by paternosters from 1970 to 1993. The elderly, the handicapped and children are the most in danger of being crushed.

Me: I'm glad we didn't have one of these in my school..

  • @fuunguus

You do realize that 5 people killed worldwide in 23 years is not a lot, right? Statistically speaking you have a better chance of dying in a plane crash, and they happen a lot more often than 5 times in 23 years. The biggest problem I can see with these is that they are not handicapped accessible. Someone in a wheelchair or who walks slowly with a cane, walker (Zimmer frame for the Brits) or leg braces wouldn't be able to get on or off quickly enough to avoid being knocked over.

  • There not dangerous they just require people with a brain and the very minimal motor and cognitive skills. and if you get stuck which you cant, you probably where acting like an arse in which case you have yourself to blame lol

  • what happened when you get to the top

  • 1:37 "It is not dangerous to over-ride provided you stand still"

  • You can see these in the background of a scene in the original Omen, in an Italian hospital.

  • "It is not dangerous to over-ride provided you stand still." hahah.

  • And no one wonders what happens if you jump out too late, and it slices you in half? goddamit ( your head )

  • i been on something like this in new york in a parking garage. good times. the one i was on was more like a belt with boxes. had handles to hold on too. best i can describe it with out drawing it.

  • did he died?

  • The girl on the right at 0:42 - priceless expression!

  • oush the alarm to stop it when someone is coming up and throw a bunch of shit through the crack and watch them scream >:)

  • what happens if u dont get off on the last stop??

  • im hoping to get over there again this week. fancying another go on it. i might stay a bit longer next time. i kind of bottled it last time and was only there about 10 minutes.

  • Cool 18 floors. Gotta ride this one

  • @MrUNIXman This paternoster is open on Weekdays before 18:00

  • hi folks can anyone confirm if the paternoster is still in use?. if it is what is the chance of someone who is not a student gaining access inside the building to ride on the paternoster?.

  • @b440ckw I don't know if it is still in use - but if it is then non-students can just walk right in the building and check it out!

  • @inoy0 i can confirm that the paternoster is alive and kicking. i went to check it out and went for a trip round it today. i decided to go down first which took me straight into the dark pit. so then i stayed on and went all the way round until i got to level 2 again. it was quite scary jumping on for the first time and getting off was even worse. but it was good fun. bet half the uni have spent time checking out the cool paternoster.

  • @b440ckw good job turning youtube into real life b440ckw!

  • Comment removed

  • @inoy0 it is still in use!!!=]

  • @grrant123 yes the lift is still in use. it was good to go and have a ride on it.

  • @b440ckw There was one in a Newcastle uni. I went on it in the 80s with my mates. Interesting experience.

  • @b440ckw There was one in a Newcastle uni. I went on it in the 80s with my mates. Interesting experience. Horrible music with this vid.

  • @b440ckw we have it in the ministry of traffic and communications bldg and i had my first ride today, very funny thing

  • @b440ckw They have one at my old Uni in University of Central England [Perry Bar campus] some students used to come from other campus's to see it and it was EXACTLY like that. and we used to think the same thing but no1 wanted to find out? I think the walls start to move in and spike with skulls come out like in indiana jones

  • @b440ckw Wikipedia states there are still some functional in the world, I'd be interested in riding one for sure.

  • it looks so cool. is there an opportunity to ride this paternoster to non students?.

  • @b440ckw Cheers, hope to do that too, I had rode the one in the Essex University too.

  • metropolis.

  • why are some of the cabins "blocked" off? are there more people on the other side???

  • @skibxskatic actually, they aren't blocked off. Thats how much space is required for the machinery behind the paternoster.

  • They had these at Baker Building, Birmingham City University (formerly UCE/Birmingham Poly) in the 90s-I'd love to know if the Paternoster is still in use there? I was both intrigued and terrified by it...

  • I never heard of a Paternoster until today, or knew that such devices existed. I like them. Apparently, there are none in the United States.

  • this doesn't look very safe... or handicap enabled lol

  • There used to be a Paternoster in the Granada TV Rental head office in Bedford in the 1970s. Great to see one still in action in the 21st century. I thought the safety Nazis would have outlawed them !!

  • use the stairs, fatty! I think that cable that's near the top of each doorway stops the system if you get jammed. i'd hate to try one of them drunk

  • I love how the rhythm of the soundtrack sounds just like the Paternoster in real life!!! The paternoster was possibly the only reason why I transferred to do Sociology! Not really, but it was high up on the list!!!

  • how is this not dangerous?

  • @rebel4evr114 I was thinking the same thing. Imagine if you were drunk and stumble down just before the elevator reaches the top...

  • It's incredible how high-capacity that thing is. The Attenborough Building has a regular elevator as well, and the hordes of people waiting for it when some idiot has tripped the paternoster have to be seen to be believed. That and the other idiots who think that the someone's-tripped-the-paternoster-alarm is the fire alarm... I wish there were more of these -- they rule.

  • It's not dangerous and it has emergency cut off's so nobody gets 'cut in half'.

  • @kidwithcoolroom1 It goes dark for about 5 seconds, the booth moves sideways to the other shaft, and then you start going down. The Attenborough has 18 floors and you can 'go over the top' or 'go under'. Brilliant and so much better than waiting for the boring regular lift!

  • too america doesn't have one because we all know some one is gonna abuse the paternoster, then end up hurting him or herself and sue the building or someone :P

I really want to go to UK and try one out :D it looks so cool

  • @cloudxpeaches I once saw an old World War II movie that showed several American naval officers stepping off one of these things, and commenting another officer didn't get off and would get off on the return trip. I had no idea what it was until I started seeing videos for Patermosters here. So I would guess that means there WERE Patermosters in the US, at some point.

  • This thing looks dangerous. Like a guillotine of some sort. Had anyone's had been cut off with such elevator?

  • @stanislavtihohod

There is a tripwire at the top of each doorway.

  • The mark of a true Leicester uni student is going under the ground floor. Apparently you can get stuck down there for 6 hours if it stops...

  • It's like a vending machine filled with prostitutes.

  • @rs104080 Why, because they're women? What is wrong with you?

  • @rs104080 You can have the one in the yashmak

  • @rs104080 well, it a perfect world, yes.

  • echo location fail?

  • Why does that look dangerous? Do many people get their feet pinched as the lift goes up and the floor "moves" down? What if you fell while getting off and you're half in and half out of the lift? Will if cut you in half?

Yes, I know the floor doesn't really move.

  • If you look closely you can see little trip-wire looking things at the top of each floor. I'm assuming if these get tripped the whole thing shuts down.

  • Still looks dangerous - not scary, just dangerous.

I worked with a food server that got his head stuck in a dumbwaiter (pun not intended). He sent food down to the bar and looked inside to watch the food go downstairs and the next tray caught him in the back of the head. It was choking him out so someone broke the thing to get him loose.

    dumbwaiter ... lol

  • what happens when it gets to the top floor?? or maybe it just doesnt end.

  • it just goes in a circle lol!

  • It won't last. Someone will get smashed between floors getting on or off...sue...and it will be trashed.

    Ebal the Atheist

  • Sweet vertical escalator!!! I remember seeing those as a kid in big parking garages where attendants would get on the tiny platforms on a big vertical belt instead of using stairs or elevators. Neat!

  • So did the camera guy get eaten at the end? Because it never shows where he/she went or what happens at the end...

    I'm turrrrrrified.

  • maybe he just set the camera down inside the elevator... they must loop around somehow. Its is terrifying though

  • @LuxyBangbang still alive, lol, just thought I'd add some mystery to the video... thanks for appreciating it!

  • That's dangerous. What if a child predator drone gets on and waits in the top?

  • I'VE GOT MY EYES ON YOU!! ( }=O|)

  • so u can effectivley look up someones skirt lol

  • those look dangerous :0

  • what happened at the end?

  • ... and he was never heard from again.

  • Sweet device.

Say, what's the name of this song?

    I recognize it.

  • It's Walk, Don't run - you might have seen a VERY cute Japanese Ukelele group called U900 performing it... look it up!

  • I am going back over 30 years and cannot handhold bars in or outside the lift.

  • this is why lots of country banished the construction of these things

  • really crowded? there's a maximum of 2 people per carriage.

Also, there's a safety wire that shuts off the system on contact with your foot long before you lose it (unfortunately).

  • The wire isnt exactly great though, if you moved your foot after the wire it would get cought.

  • the limit is 2 per carriage dumbass

  • Where are the prices

  • When you reach the top, the cabin just moves horizontally (no turning upside down or anything) to the adjacent shaft (the one in which the cabins move in the opposite direction :)). It's the same on the lowest level. There's no risk whatsoever, assuming you don't do anything stupid (like sticking your fingers where they don't belong)

  • But sometimes when you go through the bottom part, little tiny leprechauns with razor sharp teeth jump out of the wall of the shaft and bite your face off. Just saying...

  • LOLZ you just jump out on the 1st floor screaming bloody murder and your face is all red with blood and there's a gold coing stuck in your ass

  • So, If you do not get off the top, you DONT fall out the back...

you have to ride in the dark , go back down, and wait for it to revolve back to the bottom ?

  • OMG! First time I have seen one of these. I freak when I have to use an escalator. I think I would stick to the stairs. But this is pretty cool.

  • Newsflash:

Idiots are everywhere, and this is NOT a smart machine.

  • erm...what?

  • what happens to the elevator when it gets to the top?

  • You get dismembered.

  • it goes "sideways" and starts to go down.

I'm not sure however - I ridden it but it gets so dark when you "cross over".

  • the cart turns over, and you fall out the back If you don't get off

  • Holy crap, I'd be terrified I'd get crushed or something. ._.

  • I was disappointed when I see the sign on 1:37. "It is not dangerous to over-ride provided you stand still"..

I was hopping the cubical will flip over to the other side..

  • Oh and as a techgeek, I love this. A "public" uni might not be the best place to have one though. :)

  • We all know it's an accident waiting to happen. Sure, normal people won't do anything stupid. Some guy who has epilepsy or is on drugs or just doesn't feel well and faints a bit while going down.. and getting stuck.

It's never about the "normal" things that can happen, it's about the "abnormal" things and I hope you can put that in your thick American brains.

  • Who are the lunatics who say these are "dangerous"? Have any of you ridden in or operated a motor vehicle or car lately? THAT's the most dangerous thing you will ever do. This thing isn't dangerous, it's on a track! It's not like it's going to swerve off the track and hit you. And if it looks like it somehow might hit you anyway, STEP OUT OF THE WAY, seeing as it's going about the speed of a crawling infant. Good lord, but people are cowards nowadays.

  • easy: my mom already stayed in a paternoster until it changed for the other side

nothing happens, you don't stand upside down or something, it goes straight upright, only sideways and down again

  • It's just one step in/out anyway, for god's sake. Nobody is that bloody slow, people should stop with their safety-whingeing...

  • I am looking for some info about paternoster and find your video. It is a very complete one. And I am exactly the student of Leicester Uni, that makes me feel so familiar. I almost take it everyday!

  • wtf happens if you were half way in and out

  • theres a safty cord at the top.

like a bus cord that lets the bus driver know when to stop

  • You go back down or up if you forget to get off.

  • I miss the Paternoster at Leicester uni.... more fun times on it next year or not if it breaks down....

  • Umm funny this lift being named after my surname, oh well i have to expect it.

  • i heard that if you go down the basement at night you see the devil wippin' a gimp with a cat o' nine tails

  • Yah the ones at V Corps HQ where fun except when someone pushed the stop button thinking they where like an elevator.

I got stuck between floors one morning and was stuck for about an hour

  • what happens if you just stay on it forever...

  • @ShinyLopunny

nothing, you just die eventually! haha

  • In some countries they are forbidden... they are too dangerous...

  • My guess is that cable you can see at the top of each doorway is some kind of trip, so if you fall and snag it, it'll stop.

There's one in the Seven Storey at Rolls-Royce. It's not as big as the Attenborough Tower one though, not by a long way.

  • Yeah, like the wussy-ass USA!

  • Ahh I miss the paternoster in Att Tower :(

  • We had these in the Abram's Building (now called the IG Farben Building) in Frankfurt Germany when it was occupied by V Corps, US Army. They were a blast to ride on, but a female soldier from our unit was killed on one in 1992. Apparently the hood on her PT uniform got caught in the mechanism when she tried to get off and she was crushed to death between floors. Surprisingly, the military continued to use the Paternosters until the HQ moved to Heidelberg in 1994.

  • @postchevelle Wow that's scary stuff! No wonder the one at my uni freaked me out-and I hadn't even heard of that!

  • Very interesting device. And gets its name because someone was reminded of rosary beads!

  • Uh... what happens if you don't get off on the top floor!?!

  • Oh, I see. How does it know you're there? No really, how does it KNOW?

  • It doesn't stop, it's on a continuous loop. It's like a bicycle chain. The loop rotates counter-clockwise. Once you've got to the last floor it goes over the top and descends on the other side. The cabinet remains upright throughout.

  • That's what I thought.

  • Why exactly?

  • Because the video clearly shows what happens

  • what version of 'walk don't run' is this? I can't find it

  • Too bad there aren't any of these over here in the US (though I can see why). I'll have to find one of these if I'm ever in Europe.

  • The closest thing to this in the USA is a man-lift. Basically, it's a vertical conveyor belt with steps and handles that moves continuously but you cannot stay on and go back down. You have to get off and then get on one going down.

  • So, how does it flip over the top? I mean, it's too wide to just go around like an escalator when they are that close. I'm confused.. . . .

  • Haha, the people remind me of the vending machines that have the rotating selections.

  • Or like prostitutes that are on display for the customers to choose! LOL!

  • From the video it doesn't appear to even slow down when you got off -- is it just constantly going, or is there an "oh-shit" button that makes the whole chain stop if you needed a little extra time?

  • Impressive!!!

  • I did the whole Freshers' Week messing around on the paternoster at my uni (the longest one in the UK). Honestly, we were there for HOURS. So much fun. I have to use it to get to my lectures just about every day. Don't mind going through the basement, but when you get to the top, it's all shaky, because you're so high up, as well as being pitch black. It's definitely worse at the top.

Never heard of anyone getting injured on it though. If anyone had, it probably wouldn't still be in use.

  • Wish we had these in the united states. I probably see why we dont have them, i would love to ride one.

  • Problem is, Paternosters wouldn't last long in a country where lawsuits happen at the drop of a hat.

  • You're right! Especially where people sues one or another even over stupid little bullshit things like the Mcdonalds spilled hot coffee incident from about 10 years ago. I think some sue over unnecessary stuff just so they can collect damages too.

  • Seems like a good way to get chopped in half.

  • sheffield has the better one

  • Those are awesome . . . and possibly dangerous. Not recommended for drunk people.

  • what if you fall down while you are exiting the car? do you get sliced in a half?

  • death trap

  • zomg I stopped breathing at that last bit, I HATE lifts, that is just terrifying! What HAPPENED?! Did you survive?! Are you posting this from the afterlife?! *hyperventilates*

  • lol, all that happened was I switched from being a rightie to being a leftie, I reversed it by going through the basement again :)

  • I could sit in a thing like that for frikkin HOURS.

    WHEEEEEEEeeeeeeee...........................

    .....wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.....

    ...

  • wow.. the floors are really thin! :O

  • Heh, that's awesome. I can see why they don't have them in America, though: people would find any opportunity to sue the pants off of the buildings that had them in the case of injuries. It looks so nifty, though... I want to ride one.

  • They're pretty dangerous. There's no way many people would be supportive of them.

  • Elevators were my usual nightmares since I was 3, until I learned how to interpret them. But after these videos I'm afraid I'll have one more nightmare soon... I think that here in Greece there aren't cyclic elevators anymore, and as I've been said, the last of them stopped in 70's, it was the one in Central Post Office of Athens.

  • ummm what happens when you get to the top?

  • You don't turn upside down ;-) The cage moves to the other shaft/hoistway and you go down again.

  • anyway i dunno wot its like when i 4get get out.

  • rare lifts, but fastest way of getting around a building. There are 2 that i know of in an office in Warrington. Not many left in the country that are still running

  • Amazing! Here in Italy the paternoster are forbidden for security reasons, what a shame! So I imagine I have to visit your University in Leicester... uhm... by the way, funny music!
