Such a beautiful song. Many people think of Reznor as a freaky or Gothic artist.I find him being with a beautiful soul actually. He's a musical genius way ahead of his time. Every song, from the Pretty Hate Machine album, to Ghosts, is a masterpiece.
this song is great, but it also brings up so many feelings that hurt. it hurts so much. but I know there are many other people out there that feel it too....although that doesnt make it feel better, it is nice to know that I am not alone in this feeling.
Hermann Hesse
yeah infowazz, the reality is we are all just hopeless and dumb as a human race, we don't even know why things are the way they are most of the time. We just go about our day on this little planet doing this and that, thinking we are special or something, and at the end of the day we are nothing more than the animals that we keep in zoos. @23Personality its about reality not quite being what it appears. you can create your own reality- you can limit yourself, be stuck in fear, be afraid to get out of the box...or you can face it for what it is.

I dont think you have to explain why you used that footage for the video, its a real good idea, and its visually mesmerizing, great for the song, not everything has to explanatory, if they complain they should make their own video using images of each word the lyrics has which will result absurd and redounding.
Humanity what the hell is that how could the meaning of peace have our name it in it we are the most destructive beings in the existence of the world.
@keyshedah I might have agreed if man were sane, but we as a whole, are no less as dark as the void it's self. There is a poetic hint of sanity sewn into the fabric of our collective, similar to the poetic notion implied by biology, or in a further abstract, existence, but beyond that thread of hope...
I pose to you the notion that the species is no less mad than the stars that shine defiant, within the nothing.
@nazaxprime you speak for yourself, not humanity. each of us have our perceptions of reality, which are by and large social constructs (which reznor points out here). your remark though... it is the darkest assumption someone can make; that other humans, regardless of whether you've met them, know their reality, know what they have to do to survive, are dark, irrational, and nothing. and you feel self-righteous enough to tell people how you perceive their existence. "well pruned..."
@nazaxprime I agree with you about man being no more less sane then any star, but what i was trying to convey was that man thinks himself separate from nature. We believe ourselves to be divine, and very large portion of us. and that is our facade "the well pruned bush". and the dark forest i mentioned is a metaphor for our true nature which is we are wild. i dont think it is self righteous to observe something and have an opinion on it. i have not placed myself morally above anyone.
What if everthing around you wasnt quite as it seems? what if all the world you use to know is an elaborate dream.. if you look at your reflection.. is that all you want to be? If you could look right through the cracks..would you find yourself, find yourself afraid to see? What are you afraid of? Look at yourself in the mirror.. only you can change it..free yourself from the combines of your life,,,, love
@hfollett22 there is no **what if** we could look through the cracks... you can live in your illusion, you can choose to believe. you keep looking, but you will not find the words. the construct cannot deceive itself unless it only believes in love.
...say another word. let me see through the cracks... i can already feel salted eyes looking back at me.
For what its worth, jungle primates gather in groups to fight other clans to gain more territory, they are also carnivorous and eat their own species. So to say humans are the only is wrong.
So much power we ignore. You're arguing that we're primates, whilst we learn of the atom, release it's infinite energy, our imagination as a collective with art arising in directions such as this. Does he show the expression of an ape, or transcendence - is that even possible?? You deny the fact that there's something inside you, which can go in any direction within thought In favour of blissful ignorance. Even these words are the expression of something long misunderstood, can't realise. Fear..
what do you mean by "worth it"? if i enjoy talking to people, then it is worth it. if you feel like responding to us, then you apparently think it's "worth it". you give your actions worth. simply calling it stupid because YOU don't give it worth, makes you the one being stupid.
"just shut up"
naw, it's not worth it. you'd be surprised what i've learned in these conversations, so your want for me to "shut up" is worthless.
I fucking love this song. Its one of the best by NIN and on top of that is one of the most powerful for me. I wish NIN started touring again so I could go an see the greatness that Trent is.
Love this version of the song. I own the album but this is the version I use to find in the little black box on the nin.com site. I used it to comfort me and as a lullaby. Trent Reznor is a musician made in God's image. He sure raised the bar when it comes to music. I would love to know how I could buy this version. What is the name of this version? Anyone? I can only listen. Thx for putting it up & most of all thank you Michael Trent Reznor!
@Bsimpson68 Yes, but ant's can't make an atom bomb, ants can't wipe an entire city out in a few minutes with a single massive explosion, and cats and monkeys only fight over terretory, they don't fight in colonies, only humans and ant's do, and ant's only do it to get food and insure their survival .
You try to complain evrythinhg. But war is ugly. Iknow that someone complain pictures and emotions together thats all. The spirtual complains are not necessery it`s art that is all what it is.
If the Universe is not an actual physical place, then nuclear weapons could not destroy cities, etc, etc, etc. Mind is an entity within the physical universe, and morals are the expression of Man's respect for his place within that universe.
@GambitFox79 : Damned right! Not the Bomb is dangerous, it's the Man, who create and explode it! Ignorance is the Key to the next War! Sad Video, Sad Song...just Trent Reznor- Really Nice!!
@GambitFox79 Ignorance of the necessity to keep peace by threatening with death and destruction because of the belief that humanity is mostly good is the greatest ignorance of all.
@DarkCrusader9999 Sorry to be so blunt but. You go and tell a extremest not to do something empty handed, and i will tell him with a gun (loaded or unloaded), and lets see who is more successful. Its the big stick ideology, the threat of war will yield better results than actual war, but if need be you are ready for war.
@liloadventure Humans in general are not mostly evil. But we are easily corruptible or manipulated and tricked, case in point, Nazi Germany. Germany in that time had the brightest minds on the planet. Scientists, professors, students, researchers all flocked to Germany to study at their universities. Germany had won more noble prizes in multiple fields during Nazi rule than England and America combined. Yet it only took one evil man to corrupt the most sophisticated nation in the world.
@AdamSavage88 Perhaps, but if human nature were mostly evil, then as this would be the dominant part of our nature, would we not call this good? I am happy to accept that humans are conflicted, but it has always seemed a bit illogical to me to call us evil - or at least mostly evil.
@AdamSavage88 you have a typical Western belief about humanity, and it's fucked at the core. there's no such thing as inherent evil if you have ever seen an ass hole grow up from a young age.
@stopislamophobia I think happily going about life as if nothing bad will ever happen because everyone is just so jolly good and happy is a much more childish view of the world. Children are ignorant to the reality of life which is the weak are beaten down and taken advantage of. If you think otherwise you are an idealist who is blind to the reality around you.
@AdamSavage88 "If you think otherwise" this is another Western catch phrase it seems. you are so determined to be right that you overlook flaws in your argument. you have not traveled much, have you? have you been to India perhaps? seen the hundreds of children eeking out an existence in the shanty towns? most of them would tell you that their life is hard, but they aren't unhappy. you don't need to be a sad to understand the world - and these children aren't ignorant of the reality of life.
@stopislamophobia India is like that due to the caste system which was promoted by leaders. Weather they believed in the religion or not, they used religion to keep the lower classes in order and keep them from revolting by saying if you leave your birth caste then you are disobeying their god. Catholicity also did this by saying if the normal people rebel against the church (the powerful and rich) then it is rebelling against god and they will go to hell. The powerful controlling the weak.
@stopislamophobia You also said that children in India are not ignorant to the facts of life. And their facts of life is, we are poor, not many people are trying to help, the rich keep putting us down, and we have no say in what happens for our country.... right? But you also said that i was wrong by saying that the weak are put down and at least attempted to be manipulated and controlled by the rich. So, you do agree with me or just the perfect example of lower class india which you proposed?
@AdamSavage88 you need to understand that you're making cultural assumptions. you're analyzing things from a classist/marxist perspective. i am only disagreeing with you because you think the world is full of people with bad intentions. you're wrong; unfortunately, it's full of good intended people.
what does this mean? well, to hell with good intentions. i'll use the stereotypical example; Hitler had good intentions. every truth is a double edged sword; ignorance is humanities greatest tragedy
@stopislamophobia Like i said before, you didnt see the comment i made. I said people are mostly good, but easily corruptible, manipulated and tricked. Communist China/Russia, medieval Europe, Nazi Germany, WW2 era japan, are all examples of rulers manipulating and persuading average people into doing their will. And whether Hitler had good intentions or not, he had POWER so he was able to take advantage an trick normal people into doing his will.
@AdamSavage88 "because of the belief that humanity is mostly good is the greatest ignorance of all." well then you changed your argument. i thought you believed most of humanity was bad.
it is human nature to survive, take advantage of the others and so on,
How do you think humans survived for so long? Religion?
If it was not for humans to take advantage of cattle, grains and so on,you would not even exist. Now,we take advantage of each other
Exploit is the key word here.Neither your deluded religion or someone else cant refute the claim that every human would do everything to save his/her sorryass
@Vosbraka I'm not religious, nor was I talking about a religion. If you're interested in proving me wrong, consult the PhDs who publish articles on it for a living. The evidence is empirical; humans lived in groups because they were most efficient. Having someone to look out for you proved to increase our survival. It's actually instinctive; we're instinctively caring.
it's not exploitation; it's a symbiotic relationship.
@stopislamophobia No. Wrong. Like every other mammal with a male 1.5 times the size of the female, we are polygamous. All the females go to the most relentless killer, who has no need or use for compassion; that, along with conscience, remorse, and delusions of morality are for the non-breeding males (slave soldiers) used to beat the females and sneaky males into obedience. So yes, compassion IS instinctive; it allows the small and weak of the species to maintain a tolerable sence of reality.
@cyranodebergerack That's some pretty ancient theory your preaching. I recommend reading up on the more recent historical anthropological and evolutionary psychological sources. Mind you, your example is probably right in one instance, but is certainly not a cross-culture cutting argument. We may also be talking about different "stages" of our species development.
@stopislamophobia Words are wind. Like character attacks. Realy? Child. Evidence talks. Bullshit walks. Human males are 150% larger than their female mates. From conception males use 110% more resources from their uterine donor than females. They are 150% larger than their female mates, who arrive in heat simultaneously when voluntarily penned. And every other mammal 150% larger than the female is polygamous, relentless, savage (herbivore or no). And you have detritus from 10,000 years? OOOOOhh.
@cyranodebergerack "Words are wind" right back at ya. Evidence does talk; that echoes the eugenics movement. You can't translate loaded statistics into facts about human behavior. I know exactly what you're talking about, and the words "relentless" and "savage" are very reductionist.
@NotShyMarc You're a weak, impotent, passive aggressive, ugly and stupid waste of good air :). Your father would fuck anything with a hole between its legs. I'll get back to living in Laguna Beach now and see what waste of time you wrote in another two weeks. You think it's bad now. Wait and see what happens to the most imaginative and gentle of your grandchildren. If you can think up a good enough line to keep every girl you plant your seed in from aborting it.

...nothing will matter anymore--at least not to me. Now, as I meditate and search for a better understanding of life, the opinions i have stated so far may change, but it does not change the kind of person I am. I still strive to create as much good karma in my life as I can. Back when I was younger, going to a Baptist church, I still worked toward good karma--I just didn't call it that. When I prayed, I do not believe that there was a God in the sky that was listening, but by ... more...
@Drive4Jesus (Don't mean to interrupt you, but you've been gone for 1h+) No flame war here - We're NIN fans.:) I don't disagree with anything you've said so far, but it seams you're just describing the laws of cause and effect. The word karma on the other hand carries a lot of metaphysical baggage (in spite of it's literal translation). The belief that something beside oneself is keeping score of one's actions isn't necessary to lead a virtuous life. PM me if we're to pursue this further. Peace
wholly transferred to another physical body in it's entirety seems a bit, well, I just can't bring myself to believe that. But, parts of my "soul" will go on to make up the energy that holds the molecules together in the plant, that the rabbit eats for nourishment, and the coyote eats the rabbit, and a part of me becomes coyote. And the other plant was eaten by a caterpillar.....and so on. My goal is to search for happiness and enlightenment in this life, because after I'm dead... more...
At risk of starting a flame war, I would like to offer my understanding, which has and will continue to change in a lifelong pursuit of enlightenment. My verdict on reincarnation is still out, but I *do* understand and accept karma, and the concept that every nano-joule of energy in this universe is god. (Note the lack of capitalization.) When you die, the energy in your body dissipates into the world, and becomes utilized by something else. That when I die, my same soul will be... more...
@ninanotturna .... You finally become enlightened by realizing that God itself is the universe and everything in it. I am God, You are God, everything is God, not just some dude in the clouds, and accepting it, and then address all the bad you have done in your life. Once acceptance takes place and the bad is adressed, karma will seize itself and you shall become free from the cycle of Birth, Life, Death, and Rebirth. Trust me when I say this isn't your first and only life my friend.
@SuckDeezNutzBitch Everything is made of energy. Ok. There's something called thermodynamic. Ok. All living creatures respond to their environment. Ok, but... Consciousness, thought and perception "float on with energy" after death? You've lost me, but at least I know your definition of a soul now. Everything you said from that point on has to be taken on (unsupported) faith. If it makes you feel good, stick with it. There's a lot of worse stuff to believe in. Peace
@ninanotturna .... And the reason we became reincarnated, can't remember our past lives and are given no definitave answers as to who we are or where we truely came from in this life, is because of Karma from our last life. If you die not knowing the true meaning of Life, and have done bad and not addressed it, karma come back to get you. When you die, youre going to come right back, have all your recollections of the past wiped from your mind, and have to start the cycle again until... more...
@SuckDeezNutzBitch what if a mass virus breaks out and all of humanity dies before everyone is enlightened? I dont doubt a supreme universal conscience, but do reincarnation
@ninanotturna .... Look up Primary Perception. It proves also that all form of plants and trees have a consciousness as well. If you put a plant in a peacful surrounding and treat it with care, it'll grow to it's fullest. However, if you put a plant in a non-peaceful surrounding and treat it with neglect, it won't frow much. We continue the wheel of rebirth until we become enlightened and break free of the cycle. I've lived many lives in the past that I can't remember as have you.... more....
@ninanotturna Everything is made of Energy, including every life form. Humans, animals, and plants. When an object breaks down and desinegrates over time, it's energy disperses all over the place. The energy of any object never dies, but just changes forms. Now, what do we as people, and also animals and plants have that miterial objects don't? We have consciousness, thought, perception. Those traits float on with energy and we take form into our true selves once we die, souls.. more........
Wow the astro physicists have alot of spare time on their hands , what with expressing their scientific theories on a public forum . Shut up and listen to the music .
@adm491 It's real, but not the way we see it. Right now, we are all experiencing about 10% of Reality. It goes much deeper. This physical body with it's engine, the brain, could not handle true reality. It brain filters and distracts us from seeing what truely is.
Such a beautiful song. Many people think of Reznor as a freaky or Gothic artist.I find him being with a beautiful soul actually. He's a musical genius way ahead of his time. Every song, from the Pretty Hate Machine album, to Ghosts, is a masterpiece.

man is the facade of sanity within a universe of insanity; like a well pruned garden in the shadow of a dark forest.
keyshedah 2 months ago
@keyshedah I might have agreed if man were sane, but we as a whole, are no less as dark as the void it's self. There is a poetic hint of sanity sewn into the fabric of our collective, similar to the poetic notion implied by biology, or in a further abstract, existence, but beyond that thread of hope...
I pose to you the notion that the species is no less mad than the stars that shine defiant, within the nothing.
Well pruned? I think not.
nazaxprime 2 months ago
@nazaxprime you speak for yourself, not humanity. each of us have our perceptions of reality, which are by and large social constructs (which reznor points out here). your remark though... it is the darkest assumption someone can make; that other humans, regardless of whether you've met them, know their reality, know what they have to do to survive, are dark, irrational, and nothing. and you feel self-righteous enough to tell people how you perceive their existence. "well pruned..."
stopislamophobia 2 months ago
@nazaxprime I agree with you about man being no more less sane then any star, but what i was trying to convey was that man thinks himself separate from nature. We believe ourselves to be divine, and very large portion of us. and that is our facade "the well pruned bush". and the dark forest i mentioned is a metaphor for our true nature which is we are wild. i dont think it is self righteous to observe something and have an opinion on it. i have not placed myself morally above anyone.

If you could look right through the cracks..would you find yourself, find yourself afraid to see? What are you afraid of? Look at yourself in the mirror.. only you can change it..free yourself from the combines of your life,,,, love

I am happy to accept that humans are conflicted, but it has always seemed a bit illogical to me to call us evil - or at least mostly evil.
liloadventure 2 months ago
@AdamSavage88 you have a typical Western belief about humanity, and it's fucked at the core. there's no such thing as inherent evil if you have ever seen an ass hole grow up from a young age.
stopislamophobia 2 months ago
@stopislamophobia I think happily going about life as if nothing bad will ever happen because everyone is just so jolly good and happy is a much more childish view of the world. Children are ignorant to the reality of life which is the weak are beaten down and taken advantage of. If you think otherwise you are an idealist who is blind to the reality around you.
AdamSavage88 2 months ago

AdamSavage88 2 months ago
@stopislamophobia You also said that children in India are not ignorant to the facts of life. And their facts of life is, we are poor, not many people are trying to help, the rich keep putting us down, and we have no say in what happens for our country.... right? But you also said that i was wrong by saying that the weak are put down and at least attempted to be manipulated and controlled by the rich. So, you do agree with me or just the perfect example of lower class india which you proposed?
AdamSavage88 2 months ago
@AdamSavage88 you need to understand that you're making cultural assumptions. you're analyzing things from a classist/marxist perspective. i am only disagreeing with you because you think the world is full of people with bad intentions. you're wrong; unfortunately, it's full of good intended people.
what does this mean? well, to hell with good intentions. i'll use the stereotypical example; Hitler had good intentions. every truth is a double edged sword; ignorance is humanities greatest tragedy
stopislamophobia 2 months ago
@stopislamophobia Like i said before, you didnt see the comment i made. I said people are mostly good, but easily corruptible, manipulated and tricked. Communist China/Russia, medieval Europe, Nazi Germany, WW2 era japan, are all examples of rulers manipulating and persuading average people into doing their will. And whether Hitler had good intentions or not, he had POWER so he was able to take advantage an trick normal people into doing his will.
AdamSavage88 2 months ago
@AdamSavage88 "because of the belief that humanity is mostly good is the greatest ignorance of all." well then you changed your argument. i thought you believed most of humanity was bad.
stopislamophobia 2 months ago
@stopislamophobia humans are evil as every other fucking animal.
it is human nature to survive, take advantage of the others and so on,
How do you think humans survived for so long? Religion?
If it was not for humans to take advantage of cattle, grains and so on,you would not even exist. Now,we take advantage of each other
Exploit is the key word here.Neither your deluded religion or someone else cant refute the claim that every human would do everything to save his/her sorryass
Vosbraka 1 month ago
@Vosbraka I'm not religious, nor was I talking about a religion. If you're interested in proving me wrong, consult the PhDs who publish articles on it for a living. The evidence is empirical; humans lived in groups because they were most efficient. Having someone to look out for you proved to increase our survival. It's actually instinctive; we're instinctively caring.
it's not exploitation; it's a symbiotic relationship.
stopislamophobia 1 month ago
@stopislamophobia No. Wrong. Like every other mammal with a male 1.5 times the size of the female, we are polygamous. All the females go to the most relentless killer, who has no need or use for compassion; that, along with conscience, remorse, and delusions of morality are for the non-breeding males (slave soldiers) used to beat the females and sneaky males into obedience. So yes, compassion IS instinctive; it allows the small and weak of the species to maintain a tolerable sence of reality.
cyranodebergerack 1 month ago
@cyranodebergerack That's some pretty ancient theory your preaching. I recommend reading up on the more recent historical anthropological and evolutionary psychological sources. Mind you, your example is probably right in one instance, but is certainly not a cross-culture cutting argument. We may also be talking about different "stages" of our species development.
stopislamophobia 1 month ago
@stopislamophobia Words are wind. Like character attacks. Realy? Child. Evidence talks. Bullshit walks. Human males are 150% larger than their female mates. From conception males use 110% more resources from their uterine donor than females. They are 150% larger than their female mates, who arrive in heat simultaneously when voluntarily penned. And every other mammal 150% larger than the female is polygamous, relentless, savage (herbivore or no). And you have detritus from 10,000 years? OOOOOhh.
cyranodebergerack 1 month ago
@cyranodebergerack "Words are wind" right back at ya. Evidence does talk; that echoes the eugenics movement. You can't translate loaded statistics into facts about human behavior. I know exactly what you're talking about, and the words "relentless" and "savage" are very reductionist.
