The coolest thing about the Union Flag (not "Jack" unless on the mast of a ship) is that it is a distress signal if flown upside down. Does anyone know if this applies to any other countrys flag - apart from the UK?

A flag should have immediacy and recognisability. The USA and the UK are clear winners from that point of view. The ones that have horizontal stripes and badges fail this test. I think the award for best design should go to Canada. Japan wins for simplicity of design. I dont know why Russia settled for its flag - so boring! And (amusingly) the same colours as tthe USA (and UK and France.)

From a design perspective, the simplest designs are often the best. The US flag sure looks nice but it is certainly not in the top 15. The 50 stars and 13 stripes symbolize something here but they are just too busy on a flag and it looks cluttered.

I'm British but i say this without any biased views. Britain's flag is more original than alot of others. Most are just horizontal/vertical triple stripes with varying colours. And lots also copy the logo up in the top left and then stripes across the rest. I like Britain's because it takes the parts from all of the United Kingdom's countries into one flag with lots of meaning. I like America's also because the 13 stripes and 50 stars has a lot of history behind it which relfects in the flag.
