@Homeruler99 work on static L hangs for time from rings, bar etc. until you feel strong enough to hold it with pullups. you can add ankle weights to get even stronger . also a problem i have, like many other people, is hamstring flexibility. always helps to stretch antagonist muscles so the abs and hip flexors dont have to work even harder against gravity. then slowly add it to your pullups, and voila!! L pullups .
flexibility. Work on touching your toes (both sitting and standing). Does worlds of good. Also try shotguns: they're like leg lifts, but keeping your legs tucked, lift your knees into your shoulders, as high as you can. hold 10 seconds after each set of repetitions.
@Fintinobrien by working on regular pullups and chin ups on a bar, if you can't perform one at all, you should rest your legs on something, at the begging you should have some pain on the skin of your hands, but you get used to it and develop harder skin (avoid gloves those are for girls and sissies in the weights gym) go out and train dude!
Thanks for the video. Great start for a newbie like me. If I will be able to do these moves - that will be cool. Ring workout is a different level from anyother training
we just installed rings in our Jiu-Jitsu school for working out and building core strength. I have a new respect for all gymnasts. Everything on the rings is WAY harder than it looks. Its a great workout, even for people who are looking to add to their weightlifting routine.
Respect ;) Jordan Jovchev is one of the best gymnasts imo... He hasn't won only the olympics, won silver medal in rings in athens 2004... i still believe he deserved it.
I can do 25-30 ring pull ups continually and same reps of dips (...so it musn't be a condition problem ) but i can do never a one the muscle up execrise.. Will you help me how to improve my technics?
nah watch his hands closely on the third excersise. his changes his grip so his hands are further around the ring so rather than having straight wrists he has bent wrists
From what I gather, the reps are limited to 5-8 on most ring movements. But how many 'sets' of a movement do you do? Or does it depend on the skill level of the gymnast?
I'm interested in getting started with ring training and am under the impression that even the basic movements require a fair degree of strength. How does one get started from scratch? I have no illusions of gold medals (I'm 31 and I think that window of opportunity has closed on me). It does seem that gymnastics is geared towards the young and if you don't get into it in your youth there aren't many programs geared towards adults. Any entry level advice for adults would be greatly appreciated.
Age holds no barrier to strength training. Training the movement is usually the best answer anyone could give you besides working up to it by doing simple pull ups or something. And also; never push it, cause you'll get hurt easier. This stuff comes naturally as you get stronger in the movement.
Yeah... Practice, as twee said. Start with pull-ups show in the video and skin the cat also. Once you master those two with good form, you can advance to levers, finally going to muscle-ups.
Every progression for a skill is doing it with bent legs, then straddled, then one leg bent other straight(do both sides!), lowering the skill with straight legs, finally doing it with straight legs and holding...

Pull the rings into your chest and use a false grip.
zodawg0079 2 years ago
Keep the rings under your chin, close to your chest. You won't be able to do them as Jordan does, at the beginning. As he says, use the false grip.

gijsco 3 years ago
Nevermind - "until failure or pain.."
gijsco 3 years ago
For maximal strength it seems a 3-5 set x 3-5 reps is the way to go. Don't go until failure, it increases the recovery time.
matthewmovement 3 years ago
Yeh- was wondering about the amount of sets my self perhaps elite gymnastics do around 3-5...
equinox2244 2 years ago
Yeah, around 3 sets of 5 each, depends on your strength
qbfifthson 2 years ago
haha elite gymnasts dont even do this type of strength, this is easy for them
