What a truly sad commentary about our rights as voters. I mean, for God's sake, this is the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA! We are supposed to be the leader of a true democracy. People should want to vote and not be subjected to this kind of frustration and intimidation. I'm from the UK and here we still use paper ballots and old-fashioned hand-counting. It only takes a few hours to have all the results declared. And it's easy to do recounts if the results are very close in certain areas. I think the USA may have made a mistake in rushing into using new technologies which sound great but have a lot of problems associated with them, such as the inability to perform recounts.

Turnout in 2004 in Ohio was 65% and there were huge numbers of people still waiting in line to vote when the polls closed.

Officials are estimating the turnout will be 80% this year. I hope they've made a few changes to make sure those problems don't happen again, especially with such a big turnout expected.

Fortunately, things should be very different this year. Ohio is making early voting available to anyone starting on Sept 30. And you have until Oct 6 to register. So between Sept 30 and Oct 6, you can both register and vote at the same time. Avoid the lines! Just go and get it over with!
