Oh cool! Glad you enjoyed it. It probably took me from May-August to shoot it (had to deal with my lead actress travelling overseas and such). I edited as I went during the school year using my laptop til around September.
hey just wondering how exactly you did the effect at 1:03 and 1:05, at the start of the party, where it speeds up with the sound effect, and then goes back to normal?
@reesyrocks007 I literally just cut the footage up and sped parts of it up in time with the sound effect and added in an "additive crossfade" in between each cut (it's in FInal Cut Pro)
Oh my goodness! Loved it! What an original concept and fantstic techniques. I followed the link here from Michael Nikou's production and it seems like you guys have a year level full of tallented actors but not to mention directors. The suspense was so real when she dropped the match, only problem was that sock puppets creep me out a little. :) Hope to see more of your work in the future!
@saahfunny I just took a freeze frame of the last frame of the clip, turned it into a polaroid looking picture, and did a "dip to white" fade in between them :)
brilliant! very well edited, shot and acted. the gags weren't dry and if they were you recovered yourself. my only criticism is the ending where the acting was a little dry, i think the lines were too corny to pull off. but very very well done, it was a delight to watch!
@aussiechrizmc Thanks a lot :) the location was underneath Glenferrie Rd, Hawthorn (where the Monash Freeway crosses over it near Kooyong Tennis club)
Loved the film, it was made brilliantly. Few questions though. Do you remember the lenses you used? And also, was the music original, or was it Royalty Free or something?
oh and two tiny bits of criticism. Under the bridge (near the end), the editing seems a little too fast paced (that might just be me), and the DOF didn't need to be so shallow. It was, at times, distracting.
However, overall a brilliant film. It definitely deserved to be in Top Screen. Congrats :)
@SportsCurry The music was composed and performed by a friend of mine so yeah it was original (and some of it is my own stuff).
Fair enough about the shallow DOF. It was my intention to have that aesthetic from the beginning so I suppose we just have a difference in taste :) I mainly used a 50mm f/1.8 and sometimes a wider 24mm f/3.5 (I think that was the aperture). I just stuck with the primes!
@SportsCurry cast beautiful people that won't flake on you. make something YOU would enjoy watching rather than something that you want other people to love. annnnd have confidence in your own vision but don't be stubborn (i.e. take your teacher's criticism/advice onboard even if you disagree. they are a media teacher for a reason)
that's the only wisdom i gathered from my process haha
@packagedelephants I'm glad people notice these things :) truth be told I'm a massive Dr Who fan so I was probably inspired by its style in some way or another
@strangereffect haha AWESOME. i'm not the only one out there that's a dr who nerd eh? :) i would totes fancy a trip through time and space back to the making of this, if the TARDIS didn't glitch up somehow (end nerd). but yeah, i figure you're always going to carry what's inspired you through to your work in one way or another. and it was executed very well. i'm sure if the cast/crew of DW ever stumbled upon this they'd be very happy at the positive influence they've had.
I love the music in this! And for some reason, though it's hard to explain, the suit and some of the goofiness made me feel like I was in Dr Who for a moment.
4:39 - 4:41 was totally the best shot. Was that on purpose or did that kid just wander in there? because that was hilarious. Love the closing credits song. Love everything.
Saw this at ACMI the other week and was blown away, loved it!! If this is the standard of movie picked for Top Screen, I don't have a hope. :) But I'll aspire to that. :) AWESOME VID!
This is the best short film I have seen by far. Especially considering this is for year 12, like, no TropFest finalists comes close to this. Charlie Sturgeon was great.
Fantastic job - such an attention to speed and colour, not to mention the combination of great acting and detailed direction. Can't wait to do this subject next year.
Hahaha I think i just died a little after watching that, it was too ridiculously good. Hurts doubly bad because my film is also about a guy who creates and imaginary friend who gets out of hand but your execution and cinatography was mind blowing. Excellent work man.
its amazing what you have done with the 550 though.
i used the 500d and its crazy how much better the 550 is with only a higher frame rate and shit. did you do much post production? and what program did you use?
did you enter it into top screens (sorry for all the questions but i'm curious)
nah questions are awesome, otherwise us budding filmmakers would get nowhere haha.
the frame rate was 25fps but the shutter speed was usually 100 or more to get that sharp aesthetic. LOTS of COUNTLESS hours spent in Final Cut Pro: colour grading, vignetting, motion adjusting, sound mixing (that bloody hiss that comes out of bad quality microphones because the 550D has no levels adjuster!)
yeah ive entered into top screens. fingers crossed ey?
@GatsiosProductions Oh and also, did you use an external mic? Because the inbuilt mics on the DSLRs are shocking, and the quality of this is actually quite good. So yeah, was just wondering. (The AGC is annoying, hoping they make a firmware update like they did with the 5dMii and the 60D)
I did use an external microphone that my school's media department let me borrow. I didn't have a levels adjuster though so before each take I asked my actors to talk at their preferred volume so the AGC would remain somewhat consistent.
I also had a play with hipass and lowpass audio filters in Final Cut to clean up the more noticeable microphone blunders haha
@GatsiosProductions Oh yes! I mainly used a 50mm f/1.8, a wideangle 20mm f/2.8 (for some of the more trippy shots) and a 200mm f/2.0 lens occasionally.
This is brilliant! How did you come up with the idea?
rainbowlove94 2 days ago
awesome film man! respect ! what lenses did you use out of curiosity?
rendevouswithL 1 month ago
@rendevouswithL
Sometimes an 18-55mm 4.5 zoom lens but mainly the 50mm 1.8 EF (very reasonable price of $150 at Ted's Camera Store).

Great, great work. You had a good idea, and executed it really nicely.
Great work with 550d too, I am a slut for bokeh and low DOF, so no problems here.

But, yeah, well done.

Yeah, the shallow DOF seems very sought after, it's a look very few could achieve. it was an interesting look.
any tips for a kid making a film this year?
