Anyway, most material on Caligula hangs on to the idea of him being insane, which is somewhat inaccurate in its own right. You can hardly expect to obtain true accuracy from accounts THAT far back. :P

@RainingChilies I know, for example the story of his fake invasion of Britain and his war against Neptune, that was a myth. There's evidence that he was constructing a bridge for a real full invasion of the island and archaeologists found the money he used for funding it, so you're right he wasn't that psycho that he didn't know what he was doing. The historians accounts made him look insane to make future emperors look good.

@HistoryLover1550 With Gaius it's difficult to tell what's real and what's myth! :P Although I think that's part of what he was trying to do, in order to appear more than human. Of course, since the only sources we have from the time are based on horrifically biased senatorial traditions and conservatives who hated anything alien to Roman culture, I don't think the guy stood a chance :P

Yes- if you loved John Hurt in V for Vendetta, you'll love him I, Claudius. He plays the angry nutcase quite well, and not so melodramatic like McDowell.

John's quite down on this movie when asked in interviews but he's said that Caligula was (although he didn't know it) a dress rehearsal for the Master.
