Nero was born during the reign of Caligula--he was only a baby when Little Boots got assassinated so this is really anachronistic, so sorry...nor was Nero's father killed by the mad Gaius.
Damn...I can't help but LOVE John Simm's performances, especially the evil ones. The tension in the air around every word he says is just phenomenal! And (as a side note) he still has one of the sexiest voices ever.
@HistoryLover1550 Of course the facts were messed up. You can't expect drama to be accurate in the slightest...
Anyway, most material on Caligula hangs on to the idea of him being insane, which is somewhat inaccurate in its own right. You can hardly expect to obtain true accuracy from accounts THAT far back. :P
@RainingChilies I know, for example the story of his fake invasion of Britain and his war against Neptune, that was a myth. There's evidence that he was constructing a bridge for a real full invasion of the island and archaeologists found the money he used for funding it, so you're right he wasn't that psycho that he didn't know what he was doing. The historians accounts made him look insane to make future emperors look good.
@HistoryLover1550 With Gaius it's difficult to tell what's real and what's myth! :P Although I think that's part of what he was trying to do, in order to appear more than human. Of course, since the only sources we have from the time are based on horrifically biased senatorial traditions and conservatives who hated anything alien to Roman culture, I don't think the guy stood a chance :P
Holy sakes, he's got the sexiest eyes ever... (sorry for the unabashed fangirlling, but it's true!) and he's an absolute treat to watch. This is quite the find; thanks for sharing! :)
@MrAugustus88 The whole point is that Claudius appeared to be a stammering, limping, fugly fool regardless of his massive brain. That bearded monkey is probably a step up.
PLEASE DON'T READ THIS you will die in seven days if you don't post this comment on 10 videos in the next hour. if you do, tomorrow will be the best day of your life
apparently caligula once invited two senators to the palace in the middle of the night - and they were terrified because they thought he was going to kill them - and they got there and were shown into a room where dozens of musicians were playing, and after a short time caligula entered dressed as a woman, danced a short little number for them, and then left.
... why is it that i can totally see the master doing something like that? lol. wow, this is hilarious.
I don't think Claudius is very accurate in this movie. He used to grovel and pretend he was retarded so all his psycho family wouldn't execute him lol. This story is taken from his own accounts he kept all through his life in secret. all the other historical records were doctored and fake
Undoubtedly? Not much is known about real caligula but rumors and jokes historians did write down. He wasn't more "mad" or perverse than many other emperors who are praised as good ones except he did one BIG misake - he did opposed senate and nobility. Always fatal choice...
I just Love John Simm and he's fantastic as Caligula. He's probably the best actor in the whole movie, which by the way sucked. The only thing I like was Simm's preformance and unfortunatly, he died...

Unfortunately, I'd have to disagree with you both. :) The best Caligula on film has to be John Hurt in BBC's I, Claudius series. He's far more believable than McDowell.
Oooh, John Hurt, yay! I haven't seen "I, Claudius" yet, believe it or not. I definitely should get around to it one of these days though. Can't get enough of my favorite psychotic Roman emperor!
Yes- if you loved John Hurt in V for Vendetta, you'll love him I, Claudius. He plays the angry nutcase quite well, and not so melodramatic like McDowell.
