  • Nice video but one question?? Wouldn't the grease you use gunk up your bolt. Anyway heard if you over grease. It could possibly jam the weapon.

  • I was informed to put a small amount of lube inside the gas key to ensure a tight seal. Yes or No, Bad or Good?

  • Thank ya for the video! New AR15 owner! Very helpful, Should have it shooting by thursday, have the final part coming this week!

  • thanks, this was a handy video. I was used to to AK's and the AR15 was like from Mars so this helped alot

  • I watched this video shortly after getting my AR. I have put high rounds counts on different outings and have not had a failure or stoppage due to lubrication. This method works great for me too. Thanks for the vid!

  • so do you clean the barrel ?

  • Good info and I love the kiss my ass line, Classic. Thanks for the vid

  • really helpful

  • I dunno who you are, but you helped me a *LOT* with lubing and reassembly of my bolt. Noob with a Stag Arms Model 3 here. TYVM Sir! Moly Grease = Good, Molly + Lithium = Good, Moly + Graphite = BAD. Cheap high temp moly grease with no graphite. Autozone and O'Riley it's like $4 a pound.

  • This is a top notch video. This is exactly how you are supposed to lubricate an AR15, whether it be with grease or oil. Great video.

  • @jamesyeager I have a question for you. I have a bushmaster ar 15 and an AK 47 both with Chrome lined barrels. I was told that oiling a Chrome lined barrel will warp and damage it. How do you oil your ar barrel? I use hoppes 9 and REM oil. Is it ok to lightly coat the barrel with REM oil after using hoppes 9?

  • @Iancwilliamson - DO NOT oil the barrel of any firearm.

  • @JamesYeager Wow, you mean to never oil or lube the barrel, or do you mean to wipe the oil/lube off after applying it? I think I'm in the middle of a big fuck up here Yeagy, please save my sorry, broke ass!

  • @amore101 - I never have and never will.

  • @JamesYeager That's very telling, thank you. I appreciate you replying to me. I know your time is limited and I don't take that for granted. ~Yeagermister!

  • @Iancwilliamson Why would you lube chrome? It doesn't rust. The lube would either do nothing, or gather burned crap to collect in your rifling grooves. You might want to lightly lube a barrel with grease before long term storage, but clean the lube out before shooting it.

  • Weren't you on one man army?

  • @Iancwilliamson - Yes I was on the first episode.

  • do i need to oil my barrel????????

  • Hello Mr Yeager, thanks for the video. It is very informative and helpful. I have employed your technique. One question though, to you knowledge has anyone had any real problems with the fuse from the wheel bearing grease. Once you fire the weapon it seems to let off more fumes than when it just lubed?

  • @Homehous - It sounds as if you are using too much or are not putting it in the right places.

  • @JamesYeager Yeah maybe too much. Let me ask you this though, are you ok with the smell of wheel bearing grease? I think it is toxic, and it saids so right on the bottle. Something like ,"do not over expose yourself to the fumes". I know your method works, but I am going to try the same thing but with a product called "Froglube". Let me know what you think about any of my thought, Thanks. Saw video on One man army, You are an inspiration to all of us.

  • Thanks man, great video

  • Great! To the point with tried and true tips. Thanx!

  • Nice vid. I enjoy watching people clean their guns... no homo :)

  • Now will the High Temp grease make the carrier slide alittle smoother??

  • wow. I thought i was the only one out there using the supertech line of products . i see it all lined up behind you there! Love the video. I swear by the same grease. I have been using this stuff for years. I have shot thousands of rounds of steel case russian without a hitch and i think it has to do with the great lubrication properties of Hi temp bearing grease.

  • Cool i didnt think hi temp grease was ok...very cool...any problems with it attracting more dirt since its more sticky? It makes sense wheel bearings are hot and dirty...go forever without lube...great vid

  • good vid

  • I've been using this method since this video was posted. It works great. Thanks for posting.

  • Yeah, how do you clean the gas tube? And does it have to be cleaned?

  • @1911Fan85 - I have never cleaned one.

  • I just completed my AR, (.223) any advised on how to break it in??? How do u clean the gas tube???

  • @95Eg6SoCal

You don't need to clean the gas tube.

  • Good video, I would have never thought to use wheel bearing grease. It is much cheaper than the X-1R (green grease) Gun Grease I use, Thanks for the info.

  • how thoroughly should you clean the gas key and gas tube?

  • can someone help me please? i need to know, if you lube up the ar 15 BCG, and then just store the gun away for like 3 weeks, is the lube still good on it? or will it crust over or something? any help is very appreciated!

  • @IrishPride691 - i use the same walmart supertech grease as he does. yes. it lasts forever just about. I just took my Ar-10 build out today and fired some steel case brown bear through it. no problems whatsoever. properly lubed ar's should function without a hitch.

  • good job Mr. Yeager. Jack

  • Good video. People have turned gun lubrication into a cottage industry. +1 for grease! I use it on all my guns. Though I will re-lube in the field with whatever free sample bottle of "name your gun lube" lube I have handy. With 10's of thousands of rounds through Glocks, 1911's, revolvers, AR's etc... Never had a lube related failure ever.

  • couple of AR noob questions:

I have no idea what I should do with my new AR. Doesnt CLP do it all when it comes to lube, cleaning and preserving or should I consider other products?

Is there a break in period where I have to do anything special?

    thanks in advance

  • @duke3oh8 I personally use charcoal lighter fluid (small amount) with a brush from my cleaning kit (tooth brush would work) and scrub the bolt down every 100 rounds or so and let it air dry. Then use the grease this guy uses and put it all back together no problem so far and charcoal fluid is a great CHEAP solvent for smokeless powder.

  • why no lube on the firing pin?

  • Thanks for the great vid! I just got my first AR, appreciate the info!

  • If you dont like it you can kiss my ass! Great stuff James... Awesome!!!

  • I have the same jacket, wore it for a trip to Alaska.

  • the rem oil wipes work good on the firing pin and firing pin retainer pin

  • QUESTION DO DIFFERENT COMBAT ENVIROMENTS CHANGE THE LUBE STRATGY

IE MAJOR OPS IN ARTIC , EQUATOR JUNGLE RAINFOREST , DESERT SAND AND TALCOM POWDER SAUDI SAND ?

  • @1abcrr1 - Yes

  • Should the gas rings move on the bolt? Mine do. Does that mean they are too loose?

  • @jkmcdani - They should move freely.

  • AWESOME VIDEO! I just bought an ar15 today and this really help me understand what to clean.

  • i like how you point behind you when you told them to kiss it! Nice touch indeed!

  • Awesome and simple video! Just what I was looking for. Didn't think of using wheel bearing grease.

  • You're doing it all wrong! Haha just kidding. Excellent video!

  • thanks!! great video

  • Thanks for the vid, I just built a DPMS CAR and it was jamming and not extracting and just a mess, this corrected all issues...

  • Thanx brother for the vid.

  • excellent video! My AR functions like a champ now. Thank you

  • hahaha.... "If you're one of those people you can kiss my ass."

  • great video, thanks for the help

  • what kinda watch you wearing?

  • @MultiSr16 - Casio G-Shock

  • What is your opinion on the Steel Charging handles that are available. Thanks for the video.

  • @Fookwah - I have never used one.

  • good video..

  • "you can kiss my ass...". Loll! too bad I'm booked twice for swat training this year, and can't add tactical response for 2011. But count me in for 2012, bro.

  • @JamesYeager "If you're one of those people you can kiss my ass." I knew I would like you and your video the moment you made that statement!

  • ha i was a total noob, but just having a little know-how on how machines worked i lub'd it in all the right spots (i did put a little on the backside of the firing pin, but not the tip or where the hammer strikes) guess i lucked out

  • can you tell me exactly what type of grease your using? I went to walmart looking for super tech "wheel bearing grease" but I didnt see anything marked as such.

  • Do you have a video on what steps should be done when storing your ar-15 rifle for an extended period of time?

  • Thanks!

  • mr yeager what about cleaning and lubricating the lower? do you do that on your ar?

  • Watched your video and after having firing and fte issues, thourghly cleaned and lubed my Bushmaster and it was like a totally different weapon. Bought it used and it LOOKED clean but inside it wasn't. Thanks again, Mike

  • Thank You. It's about time someone tells it like it is! All you idiots using Hoppes oil are just shortening the life of your ar-15.

  • I followed your directions on how you lube the AR and so far it has worked very well, thank you for posting this and by the way your aditude is appreciated for those who'd snipe at you because of ananimity of this site. Something I tried is Phil Wood grease that I got at the bicycle shop, it is of course used on bicycles, and is water proof, not sure if it is any better but maybe. Thanks again.

  • I was just woundering if break free gun oil is enough to protect the AR15 rifle it's

all i have used and ive never had a jam or malfunction in my firearms but just wanted to know because breakfree is sprayed on and not rubbed on like a lube?

    Thank you

  • Do you reccomend using the D-fender D-ring from M.G.I. in the extractor? Thanks, Mike

  • Do you recommend using the D-fender D-ring from M.G.I. in the extractor? Thanks, Mike

  • @7557tnman - The D-fender is GTG

  • @JamesYeager yes i love the d fender oring as well., best ive seen

  • I see that you're using walmart's super tech all purpose grease. Walmart should start making ar15 rifles for 250.00 a piece. They should also start their own hospital and auto company.

  • Great video. Got my first AR (used). Stripped and cleaned it, then greased it like you showed. Thanks

  • I got my First AR (used) the other day. Thanks to you, I stripped it, and greased it like a pro. Thanks.

  • never thought about wheel bearing grease i will have to try that i have been using copper anti seize great video

  • Well thanx a lot man that was very helpful. coz i'm new to ar 15 thanx again

  • Thanks for this video! Very helpful. I've been using oil on my DPMS but I'm definitely going to start using grease.

  • Excellect video! Thank you for the information. I use Mobil 1 Synthetic Grease, as well as Mobil 1 Synthetic gear oil. It comes in a 75W-140 weight grade, and I find it really does a nice job of staying put on AR-15's and AK-47's much better than conventional "gun oils" do, which as you pointed out, run at much higher temperatures than most other weapons.

  • Pompous ass......

  • @guinea1972 - No actually I am Cocky.

  • hi James, how many rounds do you have through your personal AR?

  • @budlight143 - a lot

  • @JamesYeager your method seems much more logical than holding the assembeled bolt and carrier group by the bolt head and hiting it with a spray bottle full of clp until its soaking wet as my drill seargents made us do in basic. that being said, how do you think your method would work in below freezing temps? i live in the foothills of the appalachian mountians and winters here are COLD. cold weather lubrication of an ar is a big concern for me and your advice/reply would be greatly appreciated.

  • @longrangeskeeter - I live in TN and it works fine.

  • thanks! this was everything i needed to know. short and sweet.

  • Grease makes a lot more sense to me as well. When i lube my Colt 6940 i seem to get 60-100 rounds of good action out of it but anything after that (it still fires just fine) But the bolt carrier has a noticeable amount of friction on it. Even pulling the bolt carrier back with the charging handle i feel it dragging...Excluding buffer tube spring tension. Even the oil just looks looks condensation..ill try grease... Its a new rifle Most carrier wear surfaces are black still

  • Mr James, What kind of grease is that? I can not see because poor light!

I like your ideas. Please tell me what kind of grease!

Thank you! very good video and very helpful

  • Can I use Lithium grease ?? I find this grease in western auto ?

  • james what do you think of the BCM gunfighter charging handle? i had gotten one for the reasons you mentioned about the handle wearing down on one side and i haven't noticed and wear or anything on my BCM gunfighter.

  • @SPCkeith I have the same charging han due to one handle...i love it due to one handed operation!! BCM is who i always go through. Theyre awesome

  • @SPCkeith I have one in My SR-556 and I love it !!! would not trade it for anything.

  • Nice video, man.Very educational.

  • can i use Tetra Gun Grease? it is Fluoropolymer.

  • Thank you Sir! finally a noshit effective, informitive way to lube an AR. you didn't waste any time either. i hate it when it takes some jackoff 20 minutes to wipe his ass. Also keeping a spair bolt in the pistol grip is a pretty damn good idea.

  • I love to get luuuuubed up! Yeah baby!!!

  • Great video!

  • Do you recommend grease or oil for the gas rings? Or does it even matter?

  • @DontComeToMyHouse - No lube is needed there and any you put there is instantly burned off from the hot gases.

  • Great vid. Finally someone produces a video that demonstrates how to maintain the AR for what it is: A tool. No mystic over-the-top maintenance, just what works. Clearly backed by extensive knowledge on what fails, what to keep for spares and tendencies on operators induced wear.

  • James, thank you for posting this video. I use high temp wheel bearing grease and first several rounds produce lot's of nasty smoke. Is that normal or am I using wrong product or doing something stupid? Thank you.

  • How does that stuff clean up?

  • Mr. James

How often you have to lube like that??

If you store the rifle for 6 months, do I need to do that?

How do you clean barrel and other parts, I really like another VIDEO to show us in details ABOUT CLEAN BARREL AND OTHER PARTS IF U DON'T MIND!

    THANK YOU VERY MUCH!.

( In Vietnam, my father used to have an AR-15, now came to USA I purchased 1, great rifle, everytime I look at the gun, I was thinking about VN, home sick a lot!)

  • I like your attitude!

  • Good info! I actually was taught to lubricate the buffer spring, but I have noticed no difference when I decide to leave it dry.

  • Great video! Thank you for explaining in detail.

  • I thought i was the only one that used grease

  • James, I would like to know your thoughts and procedure for cleaning the chamber and locking lugs area? Thank you for the videos! Great work!

  • you can kiss my ass lol

  • Good video. Thanks for the tutorial.

  • Great video

  • hello james. so the grease i tried is "motomaster wheel bearing grease", in the description it said multipurpose high temp grease (couldnd find any that specifically said "HIGH Temp Wheel Bearing Grease" in the name), so i figured i'd give it a whirl. hope i got the right grease...

anyhow so far works great in my sig p226 and moss 590's. next i'll try in my AR's...

  • @stormbanner

+100. I use high temp lithium soap bearing grease. Nice smooth coating. Tested in cold weather @ 30* and it worked awesome.

  • "u can kiss my ass" lol

  • You are kidding right?

  • @JamesYeager, why would I waste time to kid? You mentioned you used Barrett bore cleaner to clean, grease to lube, so what is protecting from rust? Just wondering if you have a certain technique or poduct.

  • @dougdoug2006 - I say are you kidding because ARs are Parkerized and require nothing to prevent rust.

  • @JamesYeager they coating can be worn off inside the receiver at moving contact points

  • @ILRRLM - The receiver is aluminum and will not rust either.

  • I'm using high temp wheel bearing grease (Castrol Multi Purpose) with much success! However, I noticed after my typical 100 round day at the range the tail of the bolt and gas rings become very dry. 2 drops of OIL thru the carrier holes and the rings become well lubed again. Not too concerned with the tail, but the rings should stay wet. Do you re-lube before going 1000 rounds? If not do you see a performance hit?

  • You are kidding about he gas rings right? The rings have SUPER hot gasses flowing around them. There is NO LUBE that will stay on there and none that it would ever need.

  • @JamesYeager Thanks for clearing that up for me - still learning about this outstanding rifle and I feel your lube tutorial is the definitive guide.

  • excellent video, thanks for sharing and I dig the "if you dont like it kiss my ass." Have plenty of those issues with my own videos. :)

  • Good vid but ur supposed to clean the extractor and put one drop of clp on it and grab a 223 shell and push it into the extractor so lube drops inside of it.

  • @gaweek - i have never done that and my guns run just fine.

  • Awsome

  • Best part is the intro, telling people to kiss your ass! Great Vid.

  • great info..will use for my future ar15...i just got done building my lower

  • What if you have a piston AR? Do you just lube the bolt head and locking lugs?

  • @DaytonaRoadster gas systems need no lube in the piston areas they're mean to run dry but yeah, grease your bolt the same as you would in a direct impingement.

  • really enjoyed the information you presented, but what's keeping me a loyal fan from now on was your "kiss my ass" to the haters. Life is too short, continue making videos so I can keep learning

  • Used your method.... IT WORKED GREAT!! You really know your stuff. Good stuff man!

  • Awesome!! tried it, ar ran flawlessly.

  • Is it true that one should clean the barrel on an AR-15 with the cleaning rod and stuff from the barrel end and not from the feed-ramp side?

  • Makes no difference

  • Very helpful video!! Got to get down and take one of your courses one of these days; I'm just up the road in Middle Tennessee.

  • Then what are you waiting for??? :-)

  • @JamesYeager !!

I wish you have a class in Phoenix,Arizona!!!!

  • I have a can of high temp red lithium grease from walmart which has paraffin in it. Will the paraffin harden in your rifle?

  • I use it all of the time.

  • so im shooting out in 10 degree weather right now, is it still ok to use grease, i just got my first ar, an armilite m15a2, i wanna keep it oiled, but i dont want anything jamming up on me

  • That gun won't be 10 degrees very long!

  • Good point-but would you recommend any different viscosities for ranging temperatures? from Hot phoenix rapid firings or Super Cold MT winter stalking where one shot kills are standard?

  • The only problems will arise from using too much.

  • Good stuff man, thanks for the info.

  • Short, sweet, and to the point. Thanks. Great video.

  • how about pistols, would this work for them as well, on say a sig?.

  • good info

  • Comment removed

  • Great Video, i will update my lube program! Thanks

  • How well would motor oil work?

  • @talladegga

I would assume it would do no different than rem oil. James said in his glock video he uses grease because "grease stays where you put it." Oil of any kind would run off the same, no matter what kind.

  • It works just fine.

I use mobil1 15-30w during carbine courses and competitions

  • Finally a video that really shows how to lube an AR, Thanks JY

  • Great video, James. Very informative.

  • James, again, the best video on the subject.

Like I said before your videos on firearms are like God Father to movies. A category in itself. Thanks so much.

Do you allow AR's which shoot 5.45 in your classes? The reason I am asking because some matches use steel and 5.45 kinda makes holes.

  • Would you ever lube your AR with WD-40?

  • No I wouldn't. WD-40 is a very light duty lube and would not work well at all.

  • I use WD-40 to "rinse" the cleaning solvents off all my AR-15 parts but I follow up with high temp grease just like in your video....Do you think this could cause a problem ? I see that you advised SuperLugi707 not to use WD-40 as a lube but I use it more in the form of a post solvent cleaner

  • WD-40 is not a lube at all. WD stands for "water displacement". Don't use WD-40 to lube anything, use an actual lubricant. That goes for anything, not just guns.

  • cleaner, lubricant, preservative

  • Great vid! Thanks!

  • so the only thing you use CLP for is cleaning the barrel?

  • I don't use CLP at all. I clean the barrel with Barrett bore cleaner.

  • Do you recommend chrome lined barrels and chromes bolt+carrier? just wondering if its worth the extra money

  • Chrome chambers are a MUST for a fighting rifle.

  • Thanks for the video, i just bought an ar15 and this video is GREAT.

  • Thanks for the vid.

  • My pleasure.

  • Thanks a lot for your video.

Now I have a good maintenance for my AR.

    Regards from germany

Still waiting for another good vids

  • Informative vid...much appreciated. i have that same can of bearing grease for my pistols and always wondered if it would run good on my AR...now i know...thnx

  • Great video! I would really like to see a video from you some day on how you clean your AR.

I think you do an excellent job with your instructional videos. I thought the AK Operator DVD was great. I would have liked to see a little more about what to look for when picking out an AK, but it's probably easier to just send it to Fuller! :-)

  • Wheel bearing grease? Damn... I would have NEVER thought of that. It seems so simple sometimes.
