You let the strings heave on the upbeat of every measure after reh. 4 (2:25 and beyond; 10 bars), which I thought was rather careless. Make sure you mention it in rehearsal for similar passages in other works - ask the strings to save on beats one and two and float the bow on the upbeat. It sounds rather grotesque to let them phrase like that. Otherwise, well done!
@1violaplayr - I agree. Actually, I did ask them (at least twice) to do this in rehearsal, and we worked on it. As you probably know, many things that we work on in rehearsal don't actually come out as we hope in the performance. This was one of those instances. Glad you enjoyed it!
@travisjuergens Thanks for the reply - I do know how hard it is to get strings to remember that, as a fellow conductor and string player. Do you have the rest of this work on video, or just this movement?
Oops! I accidentally clicked dislike..wasn't trying to click anything but the dislike button popped up righty where I was impatiently clicking...I'll like it like 10 times to suffice..Great recording!!
How fortunate to stumble upon such a beautiful piece! Magical....I am indeed captivated! It pulls at my heart and elevates my soul. Ah, the wonderous power of music!
@focusenergy I only hear lovely music, too, & can't detect any flaws. :) If these picky noses are concerned that the sound doesn't match the picture, that's simply because the way digital is processed. It's the same problem when people watch any show on TV. That's because the sound is processed separately from picture. And yes, it sucks, but nobody complains because so very few people listen to TV sound or even watch TV. :) The solution: play recorded music or perform it. It WILL be in synch.
hmmm...don't see any abberant behaviour, classifiable into a DSM IV scale. Mr. Juergens gives quite a good performance, minus 1.42 minutes, I thought the violin glissando wasn't quite correct. Greetings.
Greetings to you too and thank you for your comments! Glad to see that you don't think I'm crazy! In the glissando area of which you speak (do you mean near the end?), the glockenspiel player was not watching and thus got behind. He got back on? track after a couple of measures though - that may have been what you heard.
Guess I'm getting some acoustical synchronizing problems...I do not mean 1.42 but about 2.00 minutes. I'm very sorry for my incorrect time designation.
After listening a few times I m doubting if it is the violist or sound recording pitch prolems. I'v heared this once before on a youtube concert of Simon Rattle, Messiaen part 3 l'eclairs sur l'au dela. Anyway, I like your piece and it's in my favourites. Keep up the good work,
Oh yes, I see what you mean now - in the solo violin. You're right, it's not in the score... perhaps I shouldn't have been so lenient to the soloist. Glad you enjoyed it though! Greetings from the USA!
I loved this performance. Bravi!

Its funny that at 2:25 and 4 bars on the upbow gets so exaggerated. Never heard that before, but i do like it. Wonderfully done. You give them energy

the worst part about this is that there are empty seats in the theater.

I see what Ravel meant when he said that the strings are the soul of the orchestra... Simply wondrous. Executed beautifully here.
