i just bought a 1989 accord and it has a bad head gasket but i was told it leaked oil too.you know anything about these cars,i was told it was the oil pan but i asked around and its sorta common for those to leak from the pump
@wtl1964 watch my other video "finding and fixing engine oil leaks" and do that uv test to find exactly what's leaking. Pray it's just a pump seal and not the head gasket, they cost a ton
Hey scotty I have a 1994 camaro and its leaking oil but when I start my car in the morning the oil pressure is fine then when the car starts to get hot the check gauge light comes on would this be because of the leak and there is oil in the car please respond back
Hey scotty I have a 2002 dodge ram 1500 with the 4.7 liter v8. After driving for awhile and coming to a stop my oil pressure drops. Also I'm loosing about a quart of oil a week. When I start up the truck after it has sat for a bit a cloud of smoke always shoots out the exhaust.....any idea and solutions for me?
@richardm2187 yes, sadly your engine is probably wearing out. Excessive wear inside the engine burns oil, and causes low oil pressure from spaces inside being too large, which makes the oil pressure go low passing through the larger holes.
@cheese22092 high pressure is often clogs inside the engine, causing the part below the clog to register high oil pressure, while other parts beyond the gauge area have lower pressure. Try flushing the engine oil first and pray it fixes it. And of course, change the oil pressure sending unit with a new one cause they often break and give false readings
I have a car that needs about 1/2 quart --1 quart of motor oil about every 500 miles. I went to the dealer to have it inspected and they said it was normal. However, a a neighbor tells me that it might be a problem with the engine and might need it replaced. I do not have any oil leaks on my driveway, and I had the car inspected for leaks and none were found. The car runs beautifully and has had no issues before. What is your take on this? Thanks in advance.
@GaryMofOak4President as per usual, they are full of crap. No modern engine should use that much oil. It's just burning it as you see no leaks. Live with it unless you care to rebuild the engine for a few thousand bucks.
@TacticsMac try some AT 205 reseal, I get it from amazon.com. If that doesn't work, watch my video "how to fix power steering leaks" and use that UV leak dye to find what's leaking, as a hose, and replace the leaking part.
this video and the timing belt video, are going to be crucial in my next repair; especially because they were both on a toyota 2.2 5SFE and thats what I got. Thank You for some great videos.
@movie1177 depends where the oil is. If the whole plug is oiled, replace the spark plug tube seals and the valve cover gasket. BUT, if only the firing end is oily, the engine is wearing out internally, BIG money repair.
@friedchicken1981 that's impossible, that holds coolant. The leak would be above and dripping down the thermostat housing. Do this test to find the real source. Use the UV dye.
@loser6574 if the oil is on the top and bottom of the plugs, change the valve cover gasket AND the spark plug tube holes. If only on the bottom firing end, time for a new engine.
Scotty, got question I got 96 Honda Accord AT with driver axle into tranny leaks oil and still leaks after replacing driver axle inner seal to tranny. Does this type of car have another seal beside this seal?...help
hey i need some help cuz i got a 95 camry with the 4cyl engine and it leaks atleast a quart every 3 weeks at best. and i know that the valve cover was lose so i tightened it but it didnt stop the oil but it is leakin new oil from the bottom area but is very hard to find due to all the gunk build up thats there. i really need to find out how to fix this cuz its my fiance's daily driver for now and im studying to be a mechanic how much time did this take to complete?
@dodgeperformance1 do this video, odds are the same part is leaking on yours, they all go out, remove the timing belt and see what's leaking underneath, probably oil pump seal
@scottykilmer thanks will do everything i can to fix that leak but not knowing if its gonna need a major overhaul soon is what im worried about its got a lil over 200000 miles on the motor with only minor things done so i hope this will fix it because its needs an overhaul with the suspension front and rear
@THEMRDRC78 I would assume he didn't line the timing chain correctly, but if it matches all the marks, check for vacuum leaks and any damage to sensors or wiring
I have a 93 Corolla that leaks more oil as I drive faster. If I drive over 60 mph for one hour the oil level will go down faster than driving in the city at 50/55 mph. How do I tell if its the pump seal or the head gasket. Thanks Scott...

@SICKshotSHANE air filter oil leaks are often worn out engines with piston ring oil blow by being forced up into the air filter. Have the engine compression checked, and if it's low, live with it. Oil is cheap, engines are expensive if the engine is OK, then, check the valve cover gasket, it oculd be leaking.Scotty

Hey Scotty, I have 1998 Camry and my car car is leaking little oil. I don't know what it is called, it is leaking from the opposite side of the timing belt and fan belt are... like on the side of where the air filter is... Would getting one of your recommended stop leak product work?
That's what I was hoping you would not say! But I think you are right the computer might be the problem.. isn't the main computer like really expensive.
I need help Scotty!!! I have taken my 2002 Ford windstar to 3 different mechanics and they can't find a code it gives me..(p1405) they have changed upstream sensor. Egr sensor. And somthing that controls the air flapper. And the code keeps coming on..can you please help me
@rbautista7 I have that exact same van. Usually it's the DPFE sensor that goes bad. Have you replaced that? It's right on top and easy to unplug and replace yourself. If that hasn't been done, I'd try that before taking it to any more mechanics.
Hello Scotty. My mechanic says I have a BAD oil leak and I'm leaking from everywhere possible but I don't see or smell any oil. I can't even get a oil change because of it. I know I can do that myself but that's not the point lol. He also tells me I have blow by which can't be the case because my car doesn't smoke, (guessing that's what he means) and that I need a new engine and fixing the gaskets all around would be a waste of money. Cant afford another engine let alone another car right now.
hey scotty, i have a 1989 camaro rs. i was just wondering if u kno how to bypass the vats system/kill switch. if so could u tell me how to do it please ?
@MrWarrick87cutty you can't bypass that system if it's the factory system, it's built into the main computer. it has to be fixed if it has a problem. Scotty
Scotty, I have a'99 jeep gc with a rear main oil seal leak, not real bad but I did have to replace starter because over time it got wet enough to short it out.My question is are the atp products available in auto parts stores and is there one specific to rear main seals(or engine oil leaks)?
@scottykilmer same problem as the car in the video, however everywhere i look no one has an oil pump seal. would you happen to know where i can find one and what price range im looking at?
@dennis8061 good tools aren't cheap, pay a mechanic if you don't have any, cause taking the engine pully bolt of requires an air impact wrench AND compressor set up. Scotty
I drive a VW golf mk4 and today I took a look under and I realize that i have no oil leaking but the bottom of the car when engines stands is not wet. What do I have to do. Thanks scotty.
I have a 97 honda accord 4 cyl sedan... It was leaking badly so i changed the oil and oil filter to see if that would help. Turns out the last owner had the wrong filter seal size and tightened it waaaay to much. I took it off and replaced it with the correct filter seal size and its not leaking as much... but still leaking a little. looks like its leaking behind the block..? Help ahha?
@MrChaoticDrummer Put some UV leak dye into the engine oil and see where the green comes out. It could be the head gasket blew from running low on oil with the previous leak. Scotty
@scottykilmer Wouldnt I have obvious problems while driving, and have signs such as a gas smell in the oil if i had a blown gasket? I drive it everyday.. I dont see any signs of a blown gasket but theres oil all over haha... thanks
please tell people in your videos that after you put something back together that they have to torque it to the proper specifications or it could cause problems just a heads up..
@beaver1234567891011 most people do not have torque wrenches, and i've been wrenching 43 years and rarely use one anymore outside of engine work. And in many modern cars, there's not place to even fit a torque wrench when working on them, an absurd irony of modern design. Scotty
hey scotty, i have a 1989 camaro RS, when i got the car the guy said it had a kill switch. the key had a chip in it but he dropped it in some water, he swtched out the eginition switch and told me i had to get it reset. are there any other ways i can fix this myself,???? if soo,, how ???? everything works in the car just fine but when i turn the key nutin happens, please help me find a way to fix this
@MrWarrick87cutty you need a locksmith with the software or a mechanic with the software to reprogram it, you can't change switches and use the key you used to do. Of course I don't know what type of system he may have installed, you'd have to ask him, it could be different than the factory sustem. Scotty
@choidj different design, different type of gaskets. The cams have seals on them, but the oil pump design is different than this 4 cylinder toyota and they never leak on the v6.Scotty
@bdougie3 depends where the leak is and how hard it is to replace the part. Get a quote and I can tell you if it's fair for that particular part. scotty
NOTE: Very frequently, the oil pump shaft itself is badly scored on the 20R engine, and the whole pump needs to be replaced. Putting a new seal on a scored shaft will only fix the leak temporarily, if at all.
thanks for taking the time to put this video together. very informative and you make it so simple. My SUV leaks oil from the bottom and people tell me to get another car, but I will try to do this at some point and we'll see how it goes. Thanks, again. Antonio...
@MsMlarrea Your leak is likely much more involved (rear main crankshaft seal). On almost any newer car, you have to separate the engine and transmission to replace a rear main. Not worth it unless they're leaking profusely.
behind the timing chain, are the seals on the crank and the cam not supposed to spit out oil to lubricate the chain? someone told me it was, my timing cover looked just as covered as oil as the one in this video. thanks
@ron31689 timing chains are sealed unit inside the oil assembly. I would assume you mean timing belt in your car, in which case the seals are not supposed to leak as the belt is rubber and oil ruins it. Scotty
@scottykilmer Thank you for taking time to answer my questions. Your videos are very well put together and very informative. On my car i have a timing chain. Only two spockets one on the cam one on the crank. The seals behind them shoot oil out. so this is normal?
scotty you are such a nice guy, with a lot of enthusiasm that makes me watch ur whole entire videos all excited in my seat lol... and thanks a lot for all these videos with free valuable information!! not everybody does that...thanks!. Aleks.
"" HELP PLEASE"", hey scotty, i have a 85 cutlass supreme and it has a transmission leak coming from the pan. practically all the fluid has leaked out, but i dont drive the car alot. i tried to drive it today but it would only go in reverse, it twitches a lil bit in drive but wont move. if i were to send it up to pep boys for them to repair the gasket for the pan and put new filters in the transmission, would that fix it??? or is my transmission ruined??? PLEASE REPLY
@MrWarrick87cutty hard to say if it's ruined. But definitely get the new gasket put on and change the filter and fluid and pray you didn't ruin it. Running a tranny low on fluid all the time does burn it out. Scotty
Hey scotty question. I just bought a 99' Mazda Millenia S and there is a leak under the engine compartment. Then liquid on the pavement is watery but has a brown color its not thick like oil and not as dark. it looks like water but when it dries it leaves a stain. Do you know what this could be?
@JPraiser could be a mix of ac water condensate and oil from it dripping on a dirty engine. I f you aren't losing water or oil, leave it alone. Scotty
i have a 2001 ford focus zx3 and there's an oil leak but i have no idea where it is! i opened the hood and there's oil everywhere around the engine then i checked under the car and there's oil around the engine oil pan along with the oil drain plug. can you help me?
Hi Scotty! I just got my oil changed in my 98 Toyota Corolla and it has just begin to leak oil. Three hours after driving the car, I just checked back and I have a little pool a bit smaller than my fist underneath the passenger side about a foot away fromt he wheel. Can you help me, please? Thanks!
Hey Scotty, I've got a 1995 Mercedes-Benz C200 and its leaking oil. It looks like its leaking right underneath the engine onto the oil drip pan. Can you please help me fix this problem? Would be much appreciated. Thanks. :)
@dipzwun put some UV leak dye into the oil and see exactly where it's coming from. Normally oil pan gaskets don't leak, but get dripped on from above, like crankshaft oil seals. Scotty
hey scotty, i need ur help. my car is stuck in park. i have a 1985 cutlass and like the gear shifter thing will move back and forth but it just stays in park. do u kno what it could be? please respond back,, thank you
@MrWarrick87cutty check your brake light switch on the pedal first, if they break, you can't shit if cause the little motor inside the shifter won't release then. Scotty
Hey Scotty; how about an oil burning problem. I have a 92 chevy truck with a 350 and 147,000 miles and uses a quart every 500 miles. It starts smoking after the engine gets warm, never cold not even a puff at start up so it can't be the valve seals, right? I've tried several things to loosen stuck rings to no avail. I've never actually checked compression but it runs great, has plenty of power and has great oil pressure even when warm. it smokes mainly at idle and driving in slow traffic, help.
@MegaFlaxman the engine is worn, and burning oil. Probably a combo of piston rings and worn valve seals, the valve seals actually make is smoke more when the engine heats up, and especially at idle. Scotty
@mmorussia you pull the old ones out and plug new ones in. If the old ones are stuck, use pliars to pull em out, you're throwing em away anyway. Scotty
Hey Scotty. I live in a apartment and I would like to use air tools to work on my car. How small of an air compressor can I use to take out an axle bolt with an impact gun? Since I don't have a garage or utility closet. I need to store all of that in my living room.
@poop4256 You remove the cooler and clean it off on both sides with carb cleaner. then apply the sealer and carefully put it on snug, let it sit an hour, then tighten it up fully. Scotty
I have an oil leak on my Toyota, which is very similar to this! I can't find the leak origin! But the camshaft seals were replaced last year along with the cambelt!
Can I re-use my cambelt? And Why don't u use the torque wrench when changing the cambelt? is it safe?
Oil Sump seals were replaced 2 weeks ago, but I'm still loosing oil and it will only leak once I have full oil sump (full dipstick level) then it will leak till I have the half level and it will stay at half level for many miles.
@oavel24 well, it's lekaing somewhere, put some UV leak dye in and see where the green dye comes out. On those, the actual oil pump gaskets go bad, not just the seals. Scotty
@oavel24 You can use a cam belt over, but hey, they only cost me 20 bucks or so, so why use it over" Use this dye in the video to find your leak source though. Scotty
Be careful when prying the old seal off the camshaft, the previous owner of my car used that method, and badly gouged the sealing surface of the cam and the surrounding aluminum case. I had to remove both cams and fill in the gouges before it would stop leaking oil.
I JUST WANNA SAY THAT YOU ARE THE BEST! YOU'VE HELPED ME SO MUCH IN UNDERSTANDING ABOUT VEHICLES. YOUR THE MAN AND DESERVE YOUR OWN SHOW. OR YOU TUBE NEEDS TO BE PAYING YOU. GOOD JOB AND GREAT TEACHER! JOSH-

hey scotty im new to this i dont have that many tools either so how much would you think this job would cost tools included?
dennis8061 3 months ago
@dennis8061 good tools aren't cheap, pay a mechanic if you don't have any, cause taking the engine pully bolt of requires an air impact wrench AND compressor set up. Scotty

@scottykilmer ok how much should that job cost me then in a shop

I have a 97 honda accord 4 cyl sedan... It was leaking badly so i changed the oil and oil filter to see if that would help. Turns out the last owner had the wrong filter seal size and tightened it waaaay to much. I took it off and replaced it with the correct filter seal size and its not leaking as much... but still leaking a little. looks like its leaking behind the block..? Help ahha?
MrChaoticDrummer 6 months ago
@MrChaoticDrummer Put some UV leak dye into the engine oil and see where the green comes out. It could be the head gasket blew from running low on oil with the previous leak. Scotty
scottykilmer 6 months ago
@scottykilmer Wouldnt I have obvious problems while driving, and have signs such as a gas smell in the oil if i had a blown gasket? I drive it everyday.. I dont see any signs of a blown gasket but theres oil all over haha... thanks
MrChaoticDrummer 6 months ago
@MrChaoticDrummer not necessarily when it starts to blow, it can blow many ways and not smell yet. Scotty

please tell people in your videos that after you put something back together that they have to torque it to the proper specifications or it could cause problems just a heads up..
beaver1234567891011 6 months ago
@beaver1234567891011 most people do not have torque wrenches, and i've been wrenching 43 years and rarely use one anymore outside of engine work. And in many modern cars, there's not place to even fit a torque wrench when working on them, an absurd irony of modern design. Scotty
scottykilmer 6 months ago
@scottykilmer so only if you tight them good, will that make it??
oscarv362370 5 months ago
@oscarv362370 If all seals and gaskets are fine, tightening the bolts good will keep stuff from leaking. Scotty

hey scotty, i have a 1989 camaro RS, when i got the car the guy said it had a kill switch. the key had a chip in it but he dropped it in some water, he swtched out the eginition switch and told me i had to get it reset. are there any other ways i can fix this myself,???? if soo,, how ???? everything works in the car just fine but when i turn the key nutin happens, please help me find a way to fix this
MrWarrick87cutty 6 months ago
@MrWarrick87cutty you need a locksmith with the software or a mechanic with the software to reprogram it, you can't change switches and use the key you used to do. Of course I don't know what type of system he may have installed, you'd have to ask him, it could be different than the factory sustem. Scotty
scottykilmer 6 months ago
On a V6 Toyota, would there be two of each gasket that I'd have to replace or are they in the same place as shown in the video?
choidj 6 months ago
@choidj different design, different type of gaskets. The cams have seals on them, but the oil pump design is different than this 4 cylinder toyota and they never leak on the v6.Scotty

Antonio...
MsMlarrea 7 months ago
@MsMlarrea Your leak is likely much more involved (rear main crankshaft seal). On almost any newer car, you have to separate the engine and transmission to replace a rear main. Not worth it unless they're leaking profusely.
10MickeyMouse 7 months ago
Before you start the engine shouldnt you check the engine oil level to be Sure it isnt low because of the leak?

@13FravelJ Yes, common sense says that. i don't cover many obvious points or my videos would be too boring. Scotty

behind the timing chain, are the seals on the crank and the cam not supposed to spit out oil to lubricate the chain? someone told me it was, my timing cover looked just as covered as oil as the one in this video. thanks
ron31689 8 months ago
@ron31689 timing chains are sealed unit inside the oil assembly. I would assume you mean timing belt in your car, in which case the seals are not supposed to leak as the belt is rubber and oil ruins it. Scotty
scottykilmer 8 months ago
@scottykilmer Thank you for taking time to answer my questions. Your videos are very well put together and very informative. On my car i have a timing chain. Only two spockets one on the cam one on the crank. The seals behind them shoot oil out. so this is normal?
ron31689 8 months ago
@ron31689 yes, that's normal. My video has a timing belt, not a chain, and they should be try. Chains are soaked in oil. Scotty

MrWarrick87cutty 8 months ago
@MrWarrick87cutty hard to say if it's ruined. But definitely get the new gasket put on and change the filter and fluid and pray you didn't ruin it. Running a tranny low on fluid all the time does burn it out. Scotty

Hey scotty question. I just bought a 99' Mazda Millenia S and there is a leak under the engine compartment. Then liquid on the pavement is watery but has a brown color its not thick like oil and not as dark. it looks like water but when it dries it leaves a stain. Do you know what this could be?
JPraiser 8 months ago
@JPraiser could be a mix of ac water condensate and oil from it dripping on a dirty engine. I f you aren't losing water or oil, leave it alone. Scotty

dipzwun 9 months ago
@dipzwun put some UV leak dye into the oil and see exactly where it's coming from. Normally oil pan gaskets don't leak, but get dripped on from above, like crankshaft oil seals.

MegaFlaxman 9 months ago
@MegaFlaxman the engine is worn, and burning oil. Probably a combo of piston rings and worn valve seals, the valve seals actually make is smoke more when the engine heats up, and especially at idle. Scotty

hey scotty, i have a 1995 chrysler cirrus that is leaking oil from the oil pan,, what should i do????
MrWarrick87cutty 11 months ago
@MrWarrick87cutty If it's really the oil pan , and not it dripping from above, you have to replace the gasket, no sealer fixes those leaks. Scotty

I have an oil leak on my Toyota, which is very similar to this! I can't find the leak origin! But the camshaft seals were replaced last year along with the cambelt!
Can I re-use my cambelt? And Why don't u use the torque wrench when changing the cambelt? is it safe?
Oil Sump seals were replaced 2 weeks ago, but I'm still loosing oil and it will only leak once I have full oil sump (full dipstick level) then it will leak till I have the half level and it will stay at half level for many miles.
oavel24 11 months ago
@oavel24 well, it's lekaing somewhere, put some UV leak dye in and see where the green dye comes out. On those, the actual oil pump gaskets go bad, not just the seals. Scotty
scottykilmer 11 months ago
@oavel24 You can use a cam belt over, but hey, they only cost me 20 bucks or so, so why use it over" Use this dye in the video to find your leak source though. Scotty

Be careful when prying the old seal off the camshaft, the previous owner of my car used that method, and badly gouged the sealing surface of the cam and the surrounding aluminum case. I had to remove both cams and fill in the gouges before it would stop leaking oil.
