I think that Ennis doesn't believe in Jack's wife, because there's a part in the film that Ennis recalls that his father showed that a gay man who was his neighbor had been assaulted for being gay. Also the story of the film is set in the 60s and 70s and at that time the prejudice against gays was very intense. This is what I think. I'm not sure.
