At first it looks overwhelming but once you get used to the emx it becomes second nature :) you can begin making music with it in about 5-10 minutes. if you want to know how to use it or any tips i would be glad to help you out.
i think i either used alive mp3 recorder or cool edit pro. both programs are very easy to use especially "alive mp3 recorder" and alive record in 320kbps :)
Gogo get proper ASIO soundcard, most of them include LE-version DAW like Cubase, Ableton Live or Cakewalk. You'll never have problems recording, mixing etc your instruments again.

for this i hooked it up to my sound mixer which is hooked up to the mic input on my computer's sound card.
