you have to get your comp to show extensions

you can do this by going to ur itunes folder, clicking tools, folder options, and then under view uncheck hide extensions for known file types

Thank you very much :D I strugled with it in about 1 hour, read in diffrent chats and ask my frinds how to convert it to AAC because the button wasent there you know. But then I found the selution! 4 you guys ho dont got the button create to AAC. you go to Advance in the top of the corner of Itunes. then create verion for AAC (you need to mark your ringtone first). there you go! :D thanks again 5/5

Yes. This does not work! My Droid lets to use all songs for ringtones right on the phone....no fooling around. Apple is so greedy, they want to charge you for a song you already paid for (just to use it as a ringtone). Buy a Droid!!!!

@nisalidin - If you're using vista, and its just showing the name not the filetype, got to:

Control Panel > Appearance and personalisation > Click on folder options. Click on the view tab and look for the box 'Hide extensions for known filetypes' and uncheck it. Go back to the song and it should be [song].m4a and you can now change it. Hope that helps.

you guys if you are experiencing problems where you cannot find the files extention name, 1st go to your control panel then go to folder options got ot veiw and you have to uncheck hide extenions from protected files. then after that everything will get cleared up

Just a note to all the people trying to do this; you don't have to start the song at 29 seconds, just as long as the amount of time between the start and finish times are only 30 seconds long. Any longer than this, and your iPhone won't take the file.

Anyone try the ringtone maker program iringer? it's free, easy to use, has some effects like fading,volume control, etc. and requires 0 modding or alterations. Itunes picks it up just like a purchased ringtone. Only drawback is that you can only make 30 sec. clips. It works for All Iphone models. I highly recomend everyone try it!!! just google iringer, it will be the 1st link

one thing she forgot to mention is that you should change the song length BACK to what it was after youre done else when you play it in itunes you will be playing the 30 clip instead of the whole song. just go back to 'get info' and 'options' start at 0:00 and end at whatever the length of the song is.

She missed how to be able to make AAC files in the first place: Under iTunes 8.2 etc, go to Preferences, then under General tab, click on Import Settings, and then click on Import Setting and click on Use AAC Encoder. This works for my Mac:

Now you can right click on your shortened tunes and make them AAC files. Then I put the new copy in the Trash, and then change the file to .m4r there. Then drag it onto the Desktop, and then Add To Library. It goes right to my Ringtone file! Under 2 mins!
