i don't claim to be an authority on the subject...i don't really listen to much country nowadays (except for the folkier-based stuff that doesn't have fiddles or pop lyrics)...but growing up, i saw the mandrell show, i saw the pop-glamour, she was definitely aiming for a pop audience...
"crossover" doesn't have to be a bad word...sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't...i think dolly parton doing pop music often doesn't work, she's kind of back to her roots now...i think when a country song has a catchphrase in it (like "save a horse" or "redneck woman" or "here's a quarter" like something on a bumper sticker), then it's a Southern form of pop music...but generalizing isn't fair sometimes...at the same time, all you have to do is look at the history, i'm not far off...
omg thats me right now cause my boyfr went on his own holiday but I am independant and I am so enjoying getting my life together he is gone for another wk then I am pretty sure he wants tpo brk up or has a new grlfriend I th it is his bosses nt sure it cld be in my head bt we foght abt noting lk i got upst wh he wnted out rejection he saved me from a volitile husband so I saved hm frm drugs drinking nw tht he is better cl and hansome agn he wnts girls I am a musician painetr and Mother

i don't see how this is a country song...she maybe has a slight drawl, but that's the only thing that's country about this to my ear...i remember my parents watching her variety series on tv, with her two sisters...
@jimjr155 This is actually a crossover song, but considering it was a Billboard #1 country song and peaked at #102 on the pop chart, I've labeled it country.
@humpycub true enough...i suppose it's kind of like a shania twain crossover thing...i guess i think of steel guitar and the whole cowgirl "look" you know what i mean?...
@jimjr155 It's also what a lot of country sounded like at the time. Not everything labeled as country has to have twang and fiddles. This song won an American Music Award for Favorite Country Single.
@jimjr155 as far as women singers go shes in the top 10 of all time as far as im concerned you want to talk fake country look at all the taylor swifts and kellie lamberts of today
@NurseD2000 agreed...swift and lambert would be pop-country...i would say that barbara mandrell's sound straddled adult contemporary pop and country music...it wasn't strictly pop...just my opinion...i also found johnny cash to be more folk and glen campbell to be adult contemporary as well...but again, i'm looking at it as a rootsy thing...dolly parton dabbled in disco at one point and bluegrass...
I love this great song by Barbara Mandrell.Thank you so much for posting this. Could you post her song - Operator Long Distance Please? I would love hearing that. It's a very rare song that is hard to find on a cd. Sincerely - Jay
Barbara Mandrell, through her television show and her unique trademark sound of blending country and pop, brought a lot of people to country music that would have never listened without her influence. She was crossover before they even used the word.
this was once ranked in the top 100 country songs of all time.... Personally I think it had something no other country ever had,, a slower verse and sped up chorus, you hadn't really heard that before this song... just a FUN song
I was thinking about this song last night and how very much 2 years after the breakup with my train wreck of an ex how much room there is in this big queen size bed. Now I only sleep with my cat Sugar and he does not snore.
Well, I"m sleeping single in a Californina King ........ except for our 5 lovely kids who crawl in during thunderstorms and cold winter mornings ......... Happy New Year everyone ;) Life is good.
hey anyone do you wanna help me with a write in campaign to ABC to get Barbara and Louise on Dancing with the stars? You can go to ABC website and use the Contact us and tell them to have Barb & Louise on the show. Thank you. Love the Mandrells, always!!
Anybody know why Kye Fleming, the cowriter, reverted to her birth name of 'Rhonda' in the '80s? Somebody fill me in on that. Sounds like she'd get herself confused with Rhonda Fleming, the actress. God bless!
@01scotty2hotty: actually, it was released in the early fall of 1978 and spent 3 weeks at #1 on both the Billboard and Cashbox charts in November of '78.
No disrespect towards the multi-talented Barbara Mandrell but doesn't she look like a "Sex Goddess" on the MOODS album cover. Just yummy yummy yummy!!!

This is a good song, but I can't tell what about it makes it a country song. The lyrics suit country well, and I suppose that's what's important, but there's not really any twang to the sound. It sounds more like pop to me. There's no denying the fact that Barbara is talented, but how on earth did she get the country stations to play THIS? No offense meant to her fans - IMO this is good pop music, but it doesn't tickle my country bone. Loretta Lynn on the other hand, now THAT'S country.
you don't need "twang" for it to be country, lets look at Terri Clark, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Shania Twain, Carrie Underwood...none of those artists are full force "twang" we are in a new generation now.
I agree. Barbara got country stations to play this because of her country music reputation and clout in the industry. She wanted to reach a larger, more diverse audience and did so with this song. This was during the whole "Urban Cowboy" and "Pop Goes The Country" phase of the late '70s/early '80s.
