Awesomeness!! This is my fav from EOT. Such beauty in a time of ugliness the 90's they were. These guys were a spiritual rarity I"m glad i got to see them perform live.
Awesomeness!! This is my fav from EOT. Such beauty in a time of ugliness the 90's they were. These guys were a spiritual rarity I"m glad i got to see them perform live.
I wonder what happened to these guys, I know there was a new band or something, but then the video channels always did their best to not play them cause they don't like the howdy-dewdy routine
daviddowns81,i couldnt agree with you much more...i dont think they did that much touring in america...have you heard anything from martin's new band the armada?....its not pretty good
my fave canadian band.. I remember seeing them in '98 on the Edgefest tour and being entranced by them, they were simply amazing.
It is too bad that people have a tendency to disregard them as no more than a clone of The Doors or Led Zeppelin, while I admit the similarities are there, they still manage to come across as there own entity, and have created some great albums.. "edges Of Twiilight" being my personal fave :D
@daviddowns81 Honestly I'd, without any hesitation, put Edges up there with some of the greats like Led Zeppelin 4 or Paranoid...it's one of the unsung great albums of music. just imho mind you :)
When I went to the Transmissions concert they played Temptation to open and rocked, then Jeff Martin goes "And this one is for all the ladies in the audience..." and I forget the rest of the show, honestly. No house shaking "Sun's Going Down" , no crazy renditions of River or Sister Awake(with the bow on the guitar) or anything like they used to do. They turned into complete sellouts so they could get more air-time on Much Music. I stopped listening to them I was so disappointed.
@taxthyass Mantra I actually quite liked...Triptych was a bit hit and miss, some damn killer songs (Halcyon Days for example is one of my all time favorite TP songs ever)...but I thought they actually did a hell of a job recapturing their older sound with Interzone, it seemed like a perfect middle ground between Edges and Transmission. Seven Circles was a major disappointment after that...it has it's strong points (Luxuria for example, kicks ass) but never lived up to Interzone's promise
The singer/guitarist is Jeff Martin. The Tea Party broke up a couple of years ago. Jeff is solo right now with a band called The Armada. Check out The Tea Party's discography from 1993 thru 1997. It's great stuff. They were more popular in Canada and Australia than anywhere (they're Canadian). Truly a hugely underrated band that flew under the radar for a long time.
@veedub87 I don't know if I'd say "under the radar", at least where I grew up (city called Brantford about 4 or 5 hours away from Ottawa Ontario) they were HUGE during their first few albums. Edges was a radio staple for years, I still hear The Bazaar and Sister Awake on there every now and again. They never really broke the US market, but then Jeff Martin once said "I've lived in the US, if I heard us being played on US radio I'd be wondering 'what the hell are we doing wrong?'"
@ravenmalik One of Canada's premiere musical artists... He wrote all of The Tea Party's music, composed the lyrics, produced and was the sole guitarist, using many, many stringed instruments in their recordings.
they have a fantastic discography -- along with Jeff Martin's solo material & his new band " The Armada ", which has just released its first album this month, which is similar to the Tea Party, but with even more intricate production.
Love everything they've done, but the slower stuff in particular - they came down to New Zealand several times and I caught them twice - still the best thing I've ever seen live, and I'm a live music addict. Met them in 97 and offered to add harmonies to this, In this time and Watching what the rain blows in - Jeff was keen, but i never heard from him ;)
The live version in the related links is even better because of the extra verse. I'll never understand why the omitted from the extra verse, cause if I could hear that lone melody between the extra verse in high quality, I'd probably cry
During the Edges era Jeff was really trying to distance himself from the whole "Zeppelin/Doors" comparison...the "strangest life I've known" part is almost verbatim an old Jim Morrison quote "this is the strangest life I've ever known"...I get the feeling he felt it was just a bit too similar and removed it. It's a shame, but I think that's what wound up happening...I have a radio performance with the extra lines from JJJ too
I invite you to check out my new Tea Party video if you're interested. I've had the song for years, it's a shit video but a great song. Its called Baby What Are You Trying To Do.
This is also my favorite song of them, remembers me at my holidays in greece '95 (cause of that balalaika thing). I like more their first records (splendor solis; the edges of twighlight).
Man, I couldn't agree more with your statement about Edges being the greatest album ever recorded. I live in Texas (no one knows who they are here, real shame!)and found out about Edges of Twilight from an Australian friend of mine 10 years ago. Been my fave album ever since!
There were actually quite a few people in Austin and San Antonio that knew them a few years back. I saw them live at the 1st Ave Cabaret in Fargo, ND back in '97, and even that close to Canada, hardly anyone knew who they were. I knew of them back in '93 because a friend's Canadian stepbrother brought Splendor Solis down with him... the album put me in awe.
That was their Transmission tour, right? They actually passed through Dallas at Deep Ellum Live with a bunch of other bands. I almost went but changed my mind at the last minute. I've kicked myself in the ass for it ever since. And hell yea, Splendor Solis is greatness too. The only album of theirs I just didn't care for was the last one. After hearing that album, it didn't surprise me when I read that they broke up. I love JM's first solo album though, good stuff.
Yep. Transmission. 10 Nov 1997 in Fargo(I was stationed in ND while in the Air Force). They also played Gibson's here in Tempe, AZ on the tour. There's a video posted on here from the Gibson's show. I met the band and manager in Fargo and they told us that they had played or were going to play Tempe when I mentioned I was from AZ.
You missed a great show. There were only 70 or so people in the club when I saw them. They truly were gods live. Just incredible. Deep Ellum, eh? Funny... I've never been bugged for money by people in my life as much as every single time I've been down in Deep Ellum. I digress.. as for JM's Exile and the Kingdom, I don't care for it. TP's music is MUCH better quality, imho.
Yea I quit going to deep ellum 10 years ago or so. Someone was always asking for something, then people started getting shot. I think it's been cleaned up since, but I don't bother going anymore. Yea, I understand where you are coming from about JM's new album. And sure, it's not as good as Tea at their best, but it's still a hell of alot better than Seven Circles. Was only about 3 or 4 songs I really liked on that album, the rest was just, blah.
7C was good when compared to other music... Just not 'Tea Party' good. As for JM, it seems most of his live shows are him playing TTP staples by himself or with substandard new bandmates. If he's happy, that's great - but I don't see the point in going solo to basically just play your old band's material 'unplugged'. Oh well.
This whole album reminds me of doing acid and smoking pot in high school. Warm summer nights.

Most of the videos for the album: Edges Of Twilight are creepy, but in my opinion, EOT is THE BEST ALBUM OF ALL TIME!
