@SanDaren1 That really leaves scratching my head. I know there were lot of censorship rules active back then. Example, Ninja Gaiden games for NES were re-named as Shadow Warriors, but the second Shadow Warriors game actually carried the subtitle, Ninja Gaiden II.
So, what's up with that? But still beside that fact, I remember my friend having Ninja Gaiden 1 for Nintendo. Or how about TMNT games? They too were changed to "hero", but still I have played the official TMNT for NES.
@XJVHS When I was 4 my dad got me a Turtles kite. It had a sticker placed over the ninja with hero on it. That's all I ever knew it as. Apparently Ninja was too much for my 4 year old mind to handle
@XJVHS When I was 4 my dad got me a Turtles kite. It had a sticker placed over the ninja with hero on it. That's all I ever knew it as. Apparently Ninja was too much for my 4 year old mind to handle.
When this first came out in the UK it was actually called 'Ninja Turtles' when it aired on cable channel Prem1ere. But when they closed the BBC took the series and as nunchucks were still banned on UK screens until the mid-1990s (even though Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story still featured them) they cut out any ninja reference and retitled it 'Hero Turtles'.
Sky Movies showed the first episode as a feature length episode under the title 'Ninja Turtles' . Bloody censorship all over the place!
This indeed the European version. the word 'hero' in indeed not right, but I do like this video better then the American version. Probably because cuz of nostalgia.
Michelangelo is a party dude!!! Hah, very nice intro unbelievable nostalgia and miss for childhood, relation with this mult aswell as with many other things, whatever no-one did understand what Im said i sure, but its mine fuckin missing for wonderful sweet childhood
@MasterMaestroSensei In the UK, TMNT was released under the name Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles (TMHT). This was due to the controversy surrounding ninjas and related weapons such as nunchuks at the time. The intro sequence was heavily edited because of this. This version was also shown in most of Europe at the time.
I live in the UK and grew up with this version and I must say it confused me to find out it was originally NINJA not HERO. Maybe I grew up with it but I do prefer this version. :-)
I think the really funny thing is that in the UK the line "Splinter taught them to be Ninja teens" was replaced with "Splinter taught them to be fighting teens" as a means of removing the word Ninja. But you would think that the latter sounded more violent, eh?
wow I never heard this version before lol. But I heard that Europe change it to Hero instead of Ninja. Its actually not the first intro its just the intro for Europe. America has the Ninja name in it.
This really was some epic shit :D. Loved this when I was young xD. Brings back memories watching all this. I even have all those action figure toys somewhere in a box xD.
its all about the ORIGINAl cartoons I am a TMNT fan since i was a little girl and that new movie that came out they looked freaken wack and skinny i never even finished watching it but yeah i go crazy with this theme song hahaha
my favorite turtle is michaelangelo :) with the nunchucks
Aww, this is the version I grew up with in Norway^^ even though they changed the name to "teenage mutant hero turtles", I still liked it^^ Now.. If only they could upload some episodes <3
it is ninja, but alot of countries in Europe did not approve of "ninjas", and the nunchucks, so they removed both. good ol' American version had Ninja, and the nunchuks.
he used a sort of grappling hook, and i have no clue why they allowed a sword, but not nunchuks. perhaps because swords were used by ALL kinds of people, not just ninjas, but you wouldn't see a knight using nunchucks. Ninjas were about the only ones who used nunchuks, so they had to take it out. it really was stupid you know.
the replacement of Hero and Ninja was mostly british idea. it was a case of "cant have the violent thoughts of ninja's in a child cartoon!" so changed it to hero. as for the3 nunchucks....well they were always nunchucks. maby in one country they saw the nunchuck wernt good and changed it dont know. besides america the land of the creation of the serise wasnt immune either to such censorship. this opening aprrenlty was replaced due milchangelo flicking grenades away or other reason.
it still wasn't necessary in my opinion. but yeah, i see what you mean. still, i didn't know what ninjas were till WAY after this show, when i was a kid.
If one saw TMNT eps on tv here in Sweden this is the version you would get. But the eps released on video had the NINJA version of the theme. Strange...
You know, if you grew up in the UK or Ireland you'd say the same thing about "ninja". I still can't get used to it being called Ninja. It all depends on where you watched the show as a kid I suppose.
The name was changed because in the 1980's UK Kids TV had strict guildlines. Ninja's were seen as being too violent for kids. These days you can do anything on UK TV really and the new cartoon is called Ninja. We all knew as kids it was really ninja as the film was ninja over here and we got American toys in some stores.
It's the British version. They edited the ninja bit out as UK censors thought it was too aggressive or something. It's back to the original "Ninja Turtles" now though.
well... one thing is cirtin. the UK is fucking weird.
I mean whats with calling them the Hero turtles. they even changed the name of the arcade game in the uk, but note this Mikeys 'chucks are most defently in the game. So im willing to bet the nunchucks wernt cut out too much in the cartoon.
You bet wrong - every single shot of nunchucks was removed. You see, the UK is one of several countries where nunchucks are illegal. (Others include Germany, Norway and Hong Kong.)
Another thing I don't understand---Michaelangelo's nunchuks were considered objectionable, but no one had a problem with Leonardo and his ginormous freakin' SWORDS? (katanas) I mean, those things weren't exactly butter knives.
I don't understand something---when this series aired in the UK, how could they possibly have cut out Michaelangelo's nunchuks all the time? That would mean not only cutting every shot where he's fighting, but also when the others are in the shot with him. That means important dialogue gets cut, plus the cuts are probably all super-awkward because of the music jumps. I don't get how they pulled it off. But then, I've never seen an episode of the uh, "Hero Turtles". (....)
Basically, they changed it to Hero Turtles in the UK. Possibly because the whole concept of a 'ninja' wasn't as firmly ingrained in the consciousness of British kids at the time? Perhaps they thought we wouldn't understand what it meant.
As for Michaelangelo's nunchucks... I remember him having a grappling hook sometimes, so there was definitely some kind of effot to replace them. basing this on my hazy childhood memory of growing up watching UK edited Turtles.

I didn't bring that possibility up before because I assumed there was no WAY they would have spent the time and money for that. You're probably remembering some grappling hook shots that were in the American show anyway.
Until I somehow see one of the UK-aired episodes myself, I'm still going to be scratching my head over just how they pulled this off.
filler shots were used sometimes. sometimes you could even hear the nunchucks swirling as some other random shot covered it up. watching it now its out of place, but as a kid noone really noticed it, i can vouch for that.
[I know it's 2 years old, but I had to reply to this]

ok.. I get the cutting out of Mike's nunchucks since they were banned from practically everything at the time, but why'd they edit out the pulling the camera back to showing all 4 turtles at the begining?
Possibly it's to avoid seeing the nunchucks in Mikey's hands? (After all, such weapons are illegal in the UK and many other countries - they are classed as a strangulation weapon, you see).

it goes from the 4 of them to the logo though, they could have easily worked around it other than showing 5 seconds of a still picture

That is true...
Possibly it's to avoid seeing the nunchucks in Mikey's hands? (After all, such weapons are illegal in the UK and many other countries - they are classed as a strangulation weapon, you see).
