  • ''SPLINTER TAUGHT THEM TO BE N...FIGHTING TEENS''

  • Was ninja considered a 'Bad Word' or something back in those days?? I can't imagine why, but I knew that there was something fishy behind it

  • This sounds so wrong in my ears . HERO insted of NINJA Big NO !!!!

  • lol i too am living in Europe but we had the original theme, intro n everything. No censorship, nothing, 100% unedited TMNT :)

  • @SanDaren1 That really leaves scratching my head. I know there were lot of censorship rules active back then. Example, Ninja Gaiden games for NES were re-named as Shadow Warriors, but the second Shadow Warriors game actually carried the subtitle, Ninja Gaiden II.

So, what's up with that? But still beside that fact, I remember my friend having Ninja Gaiden 1 for Nintendo. Or how about TMNT games? They too were changed to "hero", but still I have played the official TMNT for NES.

  • @XJVHS When I was 4 my dad got me a Turtles kite. It had a sticker placed over the ninja with hero on it. That's all I ever knew it as. Apparently Ninja was too much for my 4 year old mind to handle

  • @XJVHS When I was 4 my dad got me a Turtles kite. It had a sticker placed over the ninja with hero on it. That's all I ever knew it as. Apparently Ninja was too much for my 4 year old mind to handle.

  • spinter taught them, to be FIGHTING TEENS!!! lol thats a lot less violent ^_^

  • Oh and don't get me started on Battle of the Planets aka Gatchaman!

  • When this first came out in the UK it was actually called 'Ninja Turtles' when it aired on cable channel Prem1ere. But when they closed the BBC took the series and as nunchucks were still banned on UK screens until the mid-1990s (even though Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story still featured them) they cut out any ninja reference and retitled it 'Hero Turtles'.

Sky Movies showed the first episode as a feature length episode under the title 'Ninja Turtles' . Bloody censorship all over the place!

  • oh how i miss this show :(

  • i dont care if it's the U.K version i still love this song

  • This indeed the European version. the word 'hero' in indeed not right, but I do like this video better then the American version. Probably because cuz of nostalgia.

  • its not hero turtle ***** its ninja turtel

  • I will never understand why did the U.K. censored the word "ninja" in any material at that time: games, tv shows, etc...

Or it is still doing it nowadays too?

  • Michelangelo is a party dude!!! Hah, very nice intro unbelievable nostalgia and miss for childhood, relation with this mult aswell as with many other things, whatever no-one did understand what Im said i sure, but its mine fuckin missing for wonderful sweet childhood

  • is this the U.K. version or the American version?

  • @SuperJoosten

UK, and to an extent European. It was in Sweden too for example.

  • wow, sure was surprised to hear "HERO" turtles :P

but still, it's an awesome song :D

  • but thats the 1987, there are 2 kinds, the one with hero and the other winth ninja. If i were you guyz, WATCH THE 2003 VERSION!!!! WAY COOLER!!!!!

  • lol

this is the old version, the one with ninja is the 2003 one, the cooler one... The shreder here looks like a woos...

  • it was ninja turtles in england

  • Im from sweden and there it was Ninja turtles but i still love them both :D

  • i remember ! omg i was 4 years old ....

  • haha ridiculus...as if sai and sword is not more dangerous than nunchaks :P

  • this is not the first version this is a sensurd version

  • i just watched other version of intro with ninja instead of hero and that sounds wierd to me cos i remember it as hero turtles cos im from UK

  • Suck my dick, you fúckin ásshóle!!

  • FUCKKKKKKKK

  • Another example of politics abusing cool cartoons to push political correctness, and achieve nothing but ruin the name of a cool kids show.

  • This is the U.K. version. That's why they're singing "Hero" instead of Ninja.

  • @JBMoevies nope

tmnt is the real name on it so that´s wrong pall

not tmht that´s just some sick joke

  • @DKboy86 Don't you hear them singing Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles in the vid?

  • @JBMoevies haha strange.

  • Teenage mutant "HERO" turtles??????

    WTF!!!

    IS: Teenage mutant NINJA turtles!

    dammit!

  • "hero" where "ninja" belongs make the song sound weird :(

  • True, but in the U.K. version cause the word Ninja on that time was more or less Taboo, the producers had to change into Teenage Mutant HERO turtles

  • Teenage Mutant Hero! haha sounds really weird!

  • True but that is how Politics rules...

  • In Europe it was HERO turtles. I'm from Finland and this was the intro that i have seen when i was i kid :D

  • In french, german and czech country are ninja, not hero:-)

  • @MasterMaestroSensei In the UK, TMNT was released under the name Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles (TMHT). This was due to the controversy surrounding ninjas and related weapons such as nunchuks at the time. The intro sequence was heavily edited because of this. This version was also shown in most of Europe at the time.

I live in the UK and grew up with this version and I must say it confused me to find out it was originally NINJA not HERO. Maybe I grew up with it but I do prefer this version. :-)

  • Which is name these singer?

  • I these remember on Sky One in The D.J. cat show (1990,1991,1992)

  • 1 word My Memories

  • That's two you tard.

  • Turned me on as a kid, it still does!!

    COWABUNGA!!

  • I love the editing out of any clips with Mike's Nunchucks. yeesh.

  • this is the european version cause it says hero turtles

  • I think the really funny thing is that in the UK the line "Splinter taught them to be Ninja teens" was replaced with "Splinter taught them to be fighting teens" as a means of removing the word Ninja. But you would think that the latter sounded more violent, eh?

  • The one who decided to change the name to "hero" deserve to die.

  • [scoffs]

I guess in the United Kingdom [or at least just Britain], the word "ninja" is frowned upon.

  • Britan is the United Kingdom. It's made up of England, Wales, Scotland & Northern Ireland.

  • Thanks.

I always thought Britain was just another name for England.

  • It's cool. Generally seems that most non-Brits don't get that.

  • Don't worry - most Americans aren't even aware that US isn't the only country in the world! ;)

  • 0:40 A guy can't even get a cup of coffee

  • ironic how some innocent "violent" term is banned from a continent that embraced violence upon other countries for their christianity bullshit

  • Lame! It's Teenage Mutant NINJA Turtles. That just doesn't sound right!

  • WTF fuck hero trutles NINJA IS da shit fuck this !

  • why even label your video ''teenage mutant NINJA turtles'' when they replace ninja with hero'? It's misleading. 1 star.

  • Who cares?!?!?!

  • its the same program you doofus, this is just the UK version we still call it ninja turtles

  • I know, it's the same program. But when you click on a link that says TMNT intro, you don't want to hear the TMHT intro.

  • Where the hell did all the normal intro videos go?

  • wow I never heard this version before lol. But I heard that Europe change it to Hero instead of Ninja. Its actually not the first intro its just the intro for Europe. America has the Ninja name in it.

  • the original theme before it was ninja turtles

  • It's always been Ninja Turtles. "Ninja" was censored in Europe. So they called them "hero turtles".

  • LAME.

    Ninja just made it awesome!

I'm no fan but it would be just odd to not have TMNT around.

  • Wasn't it only in The UK?

  • Yes. There was controversy around the word 'Ninja' at the time, because of some event involving students who used ninja weapons

  • damn.

  • I heard it had to do with a disturbed guy who watched a kung-fu movie and later hurled throwing stars at people

  • this needs replaced with the REAL into, no HERO bullshit

  • ninja was too violent in the land of euro

  • the uk rejected the euro. cos we hate europe and they hate us. pity the usa will soon be stuck with the amero.

  • teenage mutant "hero" turtles?!!??!!?

  • thats what they are called in europe but the american version named them ninjas

  • im glad you cleared that 1 up...kus i was LOST for a split 2nd..lol

  • If I'm not mistaken, when released in Europe, they thought "ninja" was too violent to use.

  • you are correct sir

  • How about "miss". I'm female. =P

  • Epic!!!!!!

  • why hero?? they're ninja

  • It's a british intro.

  • This really was some epic shit :D. Loved this when I was young xD. Brings back memories watching all this. I even have all those action figure toys somewhere in a box xD.

  • its all about the ORIGINAl cartoons I am a TMNT fan since i was a little girl and that new movie that came out they looked freaken wack and skinny i never even finished watching it but yeah i go crazy with this theme song hahaha

my favorite turtle is michaelangelo :) with the nunchucks

  • Aww, this is the version I grew up with in Norway^^ even though they changed the name to "teenage mutant hero turtles", I still liked it^^ Now.. If only they could upload some episodes <3

  • tmNt not tmHt

  • damn it who gayed up my childhood show?

  • teenage mutant HERO turtles?? wth i thought it was ninja :S

  • it is ninja, but alot of countries in Europe did not approve of "ninjas", and the nunchucks, so they removed both. good ol' American version had Ninja, and the nunchuks.

  • tnx didn't know that

  • wait if they didnt have numchucks... What did Mikey use? Also they allow swords but no numchucks?

  • he used a sort of grappling hook, and i have no clue why they allowed a sword, but not nunchuks. perhaps because swords were used by ALL kinds of people, not just ninjas, but you wouldn't see a knight using nunchucks. Ninjas were about the only ones who used nunchuks, so they had to take it out. it really was stupid you know.

  • the replacement of Hero and Ninja was mostly british idea. it was a case of "cant have the violent thoughts of ninja's in a child cartoon!" so changed it to hero. as for the3 nunchucks....well they were always nunchucks. maby in one country they saw the nunchuck wernt good and changed it dont know. besides america the land of the creation of the serise wasnt immune either to such censorship. this opening aprrenlty was replaced due milchangelo flicking grenades away or other reason.

  • it still wasn't necessary in my opinion. but yeah, i see what you mean. still, i didn't know what ninjas were till WAY after this show, when i was a kid.

  • If one saw TMNT eps on tv here in Sweden this is the version you would get. But the eps released on video had the NINJA version of the theme. Strange...

  • Hero turtles just doesn't sound right.. Even in the song it doesn't go with it well ...

  • You know, if you grew up in the UK or Ireland you'd say the same thing about "ninja". I still can't get used to it being called Ninja. It all depends on where you watched the show as a kid I suppose.

  • this is not the right stuff this is some other stuff WTF!!!!!

  • "Hero" turtles??? Wow...that's terrible. European friends, my heart goes out to you for having to listen to that trash.

  • I live in Belgium (YES EUROPE) and our show was called Teenage Mutant NINJA Turtles it just depends from what country you were :-)

  • in the netherlands we had both ¬¬.... it was confusing as HELL.

  • Hero turtles?

  • teenage mutant HERO turtles??

    WTF??..

    get a FREAKING grib dudes..

this is allmost Sacrilege of the blody worst kind..

    jeez.. TMHT ?? not likely

  • The name was changed because in the 1980's UK Kids TV had strict guildlines. Ninja's were seen as being too violent for kids. These days you can do anything on UK TV really and the new cartoon is called Ninja. We all knew as kids it was really ninja as the film was ninja over here and we got American toys in some stores.

  • My favourite kids show, along with Thundercats!

  • Well, i'm French, and I can assure you "ninja" wasn't taken as "spy" or "assassin" even when i was a kid (when the show was on in France)...

I guess it was a thing in some specific countries...

But ninja is so much more cool than hero x)

  • UK sucks!! Political correctness will destroy you!

  • mcdonalds will deystroy the US..

  • hahahahah it alrdy has

  • wtf its NINJA not hero D:

  • It's the British version. They edited the ninja bit out as UK censors thought it was too aggressive or something. It's back to the original "Ninja Turtles" now though.

  • wow i had no idea! that's funny XD

  • i'm english and i've got nunchucks...

(maybe i'm subconsciously trying to emulate mickalangelo)

i've got a new sunday ritual.

ten track playlist of the sweetest kids tv themes.

i would highly recommend making your own!

    =)

  • I'm Swedish, and this is on the swedish to, and I just love it<3 I remember this from I was 2-3 years old<3 MEMORIES!

  • In sweden TMNT also was TMHT..

Saying NINJA was as bad as saying WHORE...

    No just kidding..

when people heard ninja in europe they associated it with murderers and killing spies etc.. or something like that..

I was surprised when i heard that TMNT was the correct name :)

  • I knew I wasn't going mental... I always swore the first intro said "Hero" and not "Ninja".

  • Hero Turtles?

  • Go fuck yourself, dpshit. you have Obsessivecompulsive disorder. I hate these kind of messages. Theyre so fucking stupid and annoying.

  • the name of this cartoon was ''hero'' turtles before, then they changed it to ''ninja'' turtles. nothing to get confused.

  • Nope--the other way around. It was created in the US as "Ninja", but the UK broadcasters changed renamed it "Hero" in for their airings.

  • Jeez, I can't type today. That came out garbled.

(ahem) "The UK broadcasters renamed it "Hero" for their airings."

    There. :)

  • "Hero" turtles?? I'm lost.

  • well... one thing is cirtin. the UK is fucking weird.

I mean whats with calling them the Hero turtles. they even changed the name of the arcade game in the uk, but note this Mikeys 'chucks are most defently in the game. So im willing to bet the nunchucks wernt cut out too much in the cartoon.

  • You bet wrong - every single shot of nunchucks was removed. You see, the UK is one of several countries where nunchucks are illegal. (Others include Germany, Norway and Hong Kong.)

  • well not every single shot, if ya look carefully in the title sequence, you can see them a couple times :P

  • Another thing I don't understand---Michaelangelo's nunchuks were considered objectionable, but no one had a problem with Leonardo and his ginormous freakin' SWORDS? (katanas) I mean, those things weren't exactly butter knives.

    I don't get it.... :{

  • I don't understand something---when this series aired in the UK, how could they possibly have cut out Michaelangelo's nunchuks all the time? That would mean not only cutting every shot where he's fighting, but also when the others are in the shot with him. That means important dialogue gets cut, plus the cuts are probably all super-awkward because of the music jumps. I don't get how they pulled it off. But then, I've never seen an episode of the uh, "Hero Turtles". (....)

    Anyone?

  • Basically, they changed it to Hero Turtles in the UK. Possibly because the whole concept of a 'ninja' wasn't as firmly ingrained in the consciousness of British kids at the time? Perhaps they thought we wouldn't understand what it meant.

As for Michaelangelo's nunchucks... I remember him having a grappling hook sometimes, so there was definitely some kind of effot to replace them. basing this on my hazy childhood memory of growing up watching UK edited Turtles.

    Helpful at all?

  • Do you mean they actually created new animation of Michaelangelo using the hook-- to replace all the nunchuks shots? I didn't bring that possibility up before because I assumed there was no WAY they would have spent the time and money for that. You're probably remembering some grappling hook shots that were in the American show anyway.

Until I somehow see one of the UK-aired episodes myself, I'm still going to be scratching my head over just how they pulled this off.

  • filler shots were used sometimes. sometimes you could even hear the nunchucks swirling as some other random shot covered it up. watching it now its out of place, but as a kid noone really noticed it, i can vouch for that.

  • and zooms, too. you can see in the intro just as "hey get a grip" is said, the shot zooms to cut off mikey.

  • Not just in the UK - in Ireland and Germany as well. :)

  • how can anyone ban nunchuks, they rule!

  • Because in the UK, they're illegal - they're officially a strangulation weapon. :)

  • [I know it's 2 years old, but I had to reply to this]

Even in parts of the US, Nunchuks were banned.

If I'm not mistaking, I think they also banned Sais in NYS.

I read this catalog that had Sais, Nunchuks, Throwing Spikes, Shuriken [Ninja Stars] and Throwing Cards. Next to each item, it said "No ship to NY" [some included other states, but Sais only said no to NY]

I was like "What the fuck?!" I got so pissed about it I wrote a rant blog about it on MySpace.

  • You know I prefer that The song says Ninja Turtles better than hero Turtles

  • ok.. I get the cutting out of Mike's nunchucks since they were banned from practically everything at the time, but why'd they edit out the pulling the camera back to showing all 4 turtles at the begining?

  • Probably to avoid seeing the "Ninja Turtles" logo.

  • it goes from the 4 of them to the logo though, they could have easily worked around it other than showing 5 seconds of a still picture

  • That is true...

Possibly it's to avoid seeing the nunchucks in Mikey's hands? (After all, such weapons are illegal in the UK and many other countries - they are classed as a strangulation weapon, you see).

  • True, but as it pulls out Mikey's nunchucks are visible!!

    We can't have that...! ;)
