one resource you have is knowledge, download books on self sustainability, permaculture etc. when and if the world economic collapse finally gets here, (peak oil), people will leave cities in droves. just go to any public Forrest find others like you and start a small community. and if nothing happens in the world, well, save up and get a piece of land someday when you can, then transition when you can , its what I plan on doing. I hate the city Jungle, some people like their cages though.

Correction, you do mean World economic collapse, peak oil will effect the whole world, and almost every nation and every person will have to change the way they live. a few will be prepared, most will suffer in the transition period. I do not believe one has to live super primitive to live off the land in a self sufficient manner. permaculture is the science of getting the most by doing the least, giving people time for other things. its about letting nature do most of the work. for you.

I agree with you, i once drove through South Dakota, and was surprised how many roads were dirt roads, when it started snowing I preferred the dirt/gravel roads to the asphalt ones, that got super slippery. on that trip i experience my first Blizzard, a Fla native with no snow chains, I barely made it to a truck stop. many trucks and cars were stuck in snow drifts. -12 below ! and 60mph winds, sometimes gravel roads are better.
