If I could listen to only one tenor, I would choose Andrea. The tonality of his voice is golden ... the only word I can think of. His CD of Sacred Arias is superb.
This isn't a singer...it's a star! The vocal/ orchestral relationship changes to suit their eccentricities! A star has authorship : that's why they lead...it's also what made them a star!!!!!!!
organman52: All good performers will bend the song to fit them, if they choose to. It is up to the musicians to follow the vocalist. Not the other way around.
I disagree. I think 'good' performers should bend TO the music, not the other way around. I also believe that the vocalist should COLLABORATE with the orchestra/piano/others, not take the lead and be followed by everyone else. Music for more than one person is called ensemble music for a reason - it is to be performed together and interactively.
I guess, as always, it is a matter of opinion. However, the conductor is directing the orchestra, not the singer. If everybody was simply following the score, why would the orchestra even need a conductor? When I perform with an ensemble or even just a pianist, they always tell me that they will follow my lead. Naturally, if I am singing in a chorus, I follow the conductor. If not, chaos would ensue! :)
The whole purpose...of a soloist...is to have that person be set apart from the orchestra to accent their part in the piece of music. Normally everyone does perform together and interact.
The very first note [Bocelli] reveals a serious problem - swooping up to it. Why can't he just sing the opening C sharp? And then, typically for singers, he ignores the rests - releasing whenever he feels like it - in time to reenter. I give up.
Well I am Lutheran and I love this piece of music too, and when Jung Myung Hoon conducts, it is guaranteed to be beautiful.
Divine music like this rises above the differences in religion and stands on its own. IMO, some of the music found in Catholic masses and its liturgy is some of the most beautiful music ever.

No, I dont think it would be appropriate for something like that. This is usually sung during a mass when communion is being taken.
