Kenny G used to play Bebop believe it or not, he's an amazing player in that genre too. He just decided to play smooth jazz, likely because you can actually make a living at it.
Jazz is not a one way street, meaning from America to the rest of the world. Here you can hear the influnce of the middle east in this musical arrangment. Right now my ear is open to all cultures and their contributions to jazz.
I have recordings of a 14-years old Mateusz Pospieszalski playing alto saxophone with a jazz quartet. A couple of audio tracks and a couple of pictures. It was recorded in Katowice at a high school graduation ceremony of his older band members that included his brother on bass guitar and others who went on to graduate from Berklee and to tour or record with world-class artists such as Basia, Pat Metheny, David Byrne, Disney All Stars. Hope Kenny G was not hurt in making of this video. Peace2Jazz
kenny g hated by most sax player? probably true. know why? he's making money and the rest ain't. try selling this stuff and see how much you'll make ...
A very significant number of the general and instrument playing public love Kenny G' music. You might not, but the fact of the matter is, that MOST sax players can't play as well, nor sound as sweet (no pun intended), nor sell as many CD's as Kenny G. That's just fact whether you like his music or not.
the fact is that most people listening to him are idiots. or if not idiots, musically ignorant. Kenny G is not talented. if you knew anything you'd know that Kenny G is actually hated by most sax players. scratch that, hated by all GOOD sax players. my friends and i study with professionals, and none of them have anything good to say about Kenny G and none of them have colleagues that do either. the fact is, Kenny G conformed to his idiot demographic. shameful, yes. But unfortunately, it worked
@evergreach2346 What makes them idiots for listening to him? Just because people like a particular type of music doesn't make them stupid. It's naive to say that about someone. Kenny G has chosen a style of music he likes and he's succesfull with it. I listen to Kenny G and I like a lot of his stuff. That makes him an idiot or a sellout? Are he and others not allowed to like that type of music now? As a musician myself, I am troubled when I see that attitude in the music world...
If you knew anything about music you would know that Kenny G can't play worth a damn. He plays everything over the same scale and can barely play in tune. It's just that most people can't tell. I know high school kids that can play circles around him.
@saxman8845 It's not fair to imply that one doesn't know anything about music if they like Kenny G's music. Alot of Kenny G's stuff isn't my taste either, but I leave it at that; not my taste. Some would say that this video isn't music either. You can't make such a subjective artform so objective.
does the sound it make vary or do amps change it? I tried an alto the other week and it sounded like a foghorn - I may be completely wrong, i want to learn to play it
The real question is : do you like it, does it make you feel something. Isn't stupid to say it's bad if you re not abble to do the same? May be ,this strong/strange/violent.... music will be ,one day a feeling you could have just before dying for example ?
hola k tal alguien sabe como o de kien eran las piesa k canataba lisa en los simpson porfa diganme si? me encanta el saxofon y quiero escuchar mas de musica en sax con sentimiento con emocion como lo hacia en su peronaje
at least this guy is trying to be creative!! He does not play about his feelings (what a LOT of musicstudents do) but he plays what he feels. Play the unknown
I think someone was just being an asshole... thumbing down all these comments. All of the people here are making valid and good points. All I was doing was answering the man's question. Then, I praised this musician for being a great player... is that worth thumbing down? Lol.
such dimensions?! crap, isn't a dimension. he can at least try to get a decent sound and stay in the fucking chord structure. he's just pressing random keys and blowing too hard. the guy doesn't even know what he's doing.
ethan helm was better than this guy when he was a sophomore.
This kid better find a job driving a bus or a truck. He will never be a musician. He is offensive. Sounds like the marijuana, cocaine and beer did a number on this kid. He is definitely going in the wrong direction. Heroin, here is your next lifelong customer.

I am not even going to try to figure out what this nonsense was. I was waiting for a snake to come out of a barrel and bite you and put you out of your misery. You have made a mockery out of the saxophone.
FrankySnot, you are way off in your comments. This kid can play. No, it's not Sinatra, it's on another level entirely. Perhaps you should open your mind and stop being so critical. Where are your awesome videos?
That's like saying that Charlie Parker played great blues and rhythm changes, but I'd like to hear him try to play Mozart, because Mozart is real music. Free Jazz is a style that has been around for forty years, nearly half the life of jazz itself. It really has little to prove.
I know free jazz is a style in itself. It should be respected, but anyone of the big time names in free jazz could play changes too (example: coltrane, ornette coleman, miles). This is just not as impressive to me to be honest as playing some fast bop changes. By the way, Im sure parker could play mozart if he wanted to. He has quoted "rite of spring (stravinksy) and others in his solos. Dont be fooled by a free jazz artist
To be a good free jazz artist, you have to practice a lot. I am one and I practices 3+ hrs a day. :) I spent several years going down the chored changes path and then I realized I had no interest in being another bebop player. There are literally hundreds of sax players who come out of the music schools every year who are bebop specialists. Are they artists? Steve Lacy commented in an interview that he just didn't have the desire to learn all the licks that the BlueNote guys had. I agree.
Sorry for the long delayed response. I practice overtones, long tones, and intervals. I'll take an interval and play it over the entire range of the horn.
I'm currently practicing all of the three note combinations that are possible. I also practice quarter tones, mulitiphonics and other extended techniques. This list is always expanding and changing.
There are many things to learn and practice. Sometimes, I simply listen to and feel the vibration of my lowest note, to improve my sound.

for alto saxophone? look up videos of cannonball adderley, charlie parker, eric marienthal, and kenny garrett
for tenor, look up chris potter, michael brecker, john coltrane, dexter gordon, and sonny rollins

Nope The Sopran is Bb and the alt is Eb

It's the same as on Tenor, only an octave higher. The fingerings are the same on all saxophones though.
