I must accede to some criticism, and so I have altered my opinion and agree that Chick is both an innovator and an original pianist, though not as revolutionary as Bud, or Bill Evans or McCoy Tyner. Art Tatum was in a category by himself and certainly ranks as one of the greatest, if not the greatest virtuoso to ever play the piano. He was pre-bop, so he did not enter the realm of spontaneous and free flowing melodic improv (i.e. lines) that was pioneered by Bud and Bird.
i 100% agree with Woooder, chick corea is a great pianist, but there are so many other great pianist to try and say that. now, my knowledge of jazz and jazz pianist is intermediate, but i am a piano player myself, so most of my opinions towards pianist are based on how much i like their playing. but Art Tatum is probably one of the most skilled pianist i have ever heard.
It's hard to put the "greatest" tag on anybody when it comes to music because there are so many different aspects of musical performance to consider that differ from musician to musician. Chick is without a doubt, one of thee greatest to ever touch a piano!! This version with Pattitucci and Weckl is an incredible performance from three of my all time favorites!
anyone can compare anyone. Im comparing them and i think KJ is better player than Chick. Just cuz i dont play bass doesnt mean i cant have opinions. Your reasoning is sort of dumb imo.
@dwilmer7 1. You can't compare Jarrett and Chick... They are both incredible in their own respects. This comment coming from a guy who likes Keith Jarrett's stuff more than Chick's.
2. John Patiitucci is a solid upright bass player. He gets studio gigs all the time. I don't see you in the studio.. Just saying.
how do you define the greatest jazz piano player ,So many to think of , Oscar P, Art T, maybe, this guy cant put into words just gob smacked. . Genius at it best
@hihats I know the tune. 2 minutes in I thought I heard something vaguely recognizable, but then, 4 me, it went back to Klingon self-indulgence and musical masturbation. Of course he has mastery - he's been playing forever...that doesn't mean anyone who hears it and doesn't gush with praise for this particular rendition is clueless.
I love Coltrane, eg. - what a virtuoso, but even some of his staunchest fans found some things unlistenable. There's No right or wrong in subjective matters.
Thanks for your well worded thoughtful reply . I get where you're coming from and can't argue contrary to your points of view .
I have a hard time listening to Keith Jarrett . No doubt a genius on the piano .
But his incessant nasally humming is like having a mosquito buzzing in your ear
while you're trying in vain to enjoy a great pianist . Some people I know can shut that aspect of Keith out or accept it and dig him regardless . I'll listen to Keith mostly to listen to Jack D
@hihats Hey, hihats, I should thank you for being cool about my response. After I posted it, I thought - Jeez, you didn't have to get so strident - the guy just made a simple statement. Thanks for being receptive!
Funny thing: way back when I was a young guy playing keys (and drums) in commercial bands - I marveled at the greats of Jazz. I loved Chick C. during his "Light as a Feather" album era - the one with "Spain." Awesome. He's still great, no doubt.
This video was on youtube a few years ago, but then those douchebags deleted it.
Good to see it's back. I think it is not only one of this band's best performaces, but also for the individual players one of their morst tasteful performaces. That bass, fuck, he's really reaching out for heaven there. Some of the most melodic passages i've heard over these changes, even compared to sax and other instruments...
This is possibly the best ten minutes of jazz I've ever seen: the incredible skills of all of three players; the brilliance of the interactions between them. Perfect.
usually I am hesitant to use the word "greatest" or "greater" to compare musicians. But in terms of Chick Corea I agree that it's almost inevitable to be bold. He is simply amazing, and he has been amazing for the past 40 years!!!!
I was just listening to Trio Music from 1981, which is the same trio as Now He Sings Now He Sobs (from 1966!!!) - that was one of the greatest piano trios in history, if not the greatest. And this version of Green Dolphin is fantastic!!!
@Justino111 Strongly disagree. For pianists like myself, the Bill Evans Trio with Scott Lafaro was inarguably the "greatest piano trio" to date. First of all Bill was a real innovator, Chick is NOT, just a great technician and a assimilatior. He himself would probably admit such. Secondly, Scott Lafaro, also an innovator, was perhaps the greatest bassist of all time. Thirdly, Corea, Vitrous and Haynes were never really a working trio, jut came together for certain gigs.
@orqsilva you say that Corea is "just a great technician and a(n) assimilator". I cannot debate with someone who starts a discussion with such ludicrous and nonsensical statement. I did not have to attack any other piano trio to make my point. You clearly have NO CLUE of what you are saying. And I bet u have no style as a pianist. Your statement shows that already.
WHO is (Miroslav) "VITROUS"?
So, the 3 musicians recorded several albums together....but they were never a trio?Again...clueless.
@otavioandradas I stand behind my statements. After listening to "GDS," I certainly hear some great and exciting piano playing, top of the jazz food chain in fact, but nothing completely ORIGINAL. Real innovators in music are few and far between. To be a real innovator, u not only have to create a style, but have it affect the future development of music & the ways others play. If u poll 100 good jazz pianists, 98% would say the same thing. & why did he make his best trio rcd. in '68.
@orqsilva there is not only Einstein in the world of physics. Without many other people Einstein would have not existed. And after Einstein many physicists have discovered fantastic things. BUT it's easy to say that there is nobody after Einstein. It's a romantic take on history - a wrong one, though.
Chick Corea has a unique kind of phrasing! a unique kind of articulation, a unique harmonic approach, and even his piano sound is unique! I love Bill Evans and I'm not trying to compare them.
@orqsilva Chick corea just a great technician and a(n) assimilator??
Every musician, somehow, got influence from others ,like Keith Jarrett ,Chick corea, from Bill evans, and bill evans from bud powell, chopin and lennie tristano
Remeber, how critics treated bill evans earlier in his career, they said he was just 'cocktail piano player' ,and That was totally blind-speaking
@Justino111 I would agree that "Now He Sings, Now He Sobs" is one of the greatest piano trio records of all time. But that was in 1968, where has he gone since then. Other than his Return to Forever bands (which were also great) not to far, or certainly he has not has made a better trio record since 1968. What does that say? Chick is a great jazz composer as well, but there are blockages (stiffness also) in his play. He does swing his ass off though.
why are you ignoring reality? This is not a matter of opinion, but if u don't like the guy just don't write anything about him. Corea duo with Hancock, zillions of SOLO concerts around the world, the legendary album THREE QUARTETS from 1981 (with Michael Brecker, Eddie Gomez, etc), the works with Anthony Braxton and Dave Holland (CIRCLE), the FANTASTIC PIANO IMPROVISATIONS vol. 1, the Akoustic trio has some powerful renditions of well-known pieces...
@nmon123 Chick Corea is a great pianist indeed. He is definitely not the greatest though. The only reason that might excuse you is your very poor knowledge of pianists in general so I suggest you'd better not claim such things..
