love how the coast guard has search and rescue colours but ive seen some with a barett 50cal hanging out the side of it. its like yay were going to be rescued and then you get blown up by a 50cal lol
@alitmz OK...how about at about 2:27 in the video when the rotor is coasting and coming to a stop and is clearly rotating clockwise (as seen from the pilot's seat). Conventional American made helicopters such as the Bell 206 or Sikorsky UH-60, the main rotor turns counterclockwise. Are you really trying to make me feel like I was stupid and don't know what I am talking about?...fail
@alitmz Man, you're digging real hard to come up with some good stuff. Don't hurt yourself now. Do you realize you're just making yourself look like a total ass?
@PilotMan7700 I actually don't even have a shovel...no need..not really digging. It seems that you are digging super hard to be righteous...how's that going for you?
The boat to to the left ist a standard procedere when a copter ist landing. And its realy hard to land a copter on a ship. But the dolphin hh-65A is a very easy to fly copter comparing to other the same size. Try this with the old Sikorsky HH-52A Sea Guard like we did in the past. The Pilot did a real good job anyway.
thats one of the hardest things as a helicopter pilot landing at sea on a moving platform with opposing wind and drag tubulance from a boat. great job... and im just wondering if those rotors have shut down brakes cuz they come to a complete stop really fast compared to the h65's ive seen before.
Coasties are great helicopter pilots. But i still wouldn't fly in a helicopter until the came up with a good escape plan for if your helicopter goes down.
You need a college degree and a comission as an officer into the Coast Guard. The best route would probably be the Coast Guard Academy. Although I believe if you go into any ROTC program at a college you can transfer the commission to the Coast Guard, I'm not positive about that though.
Well my suggestion if your going to college just get it out of the way while your there, i.e. ROTC. You can go to college and then do OCS which is an option but it would take more time that way. Also, I'm not exactly sure the Coast Guard has an OCS program. But, I don't know that much about the Coast Guard just what the recruiter told me when I asked about being a pilot for them. Which you should probably talk to a Coast Guard recruiter about it.
@flyboycamkevi1 Join the Auxiliary when you join 17, and if possible take some early pilots courses. Through the Auxiliary you will receive more training and get to go up in a USCG Aux Helicopter.
@cachorrito0207 - I think is black because light does not reflect off any shiny surface, so artificial light or the sun's glare won't disturb the sight of the crew!
There is no reason why it is matte black vs gloss black, the older Bravo models and the 60s we fly have a gloss nose, it is just the way they are made, but there is a radar in there
So beautiful, a work of art, the team behind the hh65 did an outstanding job, im sure there's thousands of ppl that consider this helicopter their fav
This brings me back to 1998 off the coast of Hawaii 200 miles out a man with a heart attack at sea was saved by the coast guard and the navy together on the afs1mars for refueling. We had rough seas that day.
Barry, thats because of the tech. level of metals, paints and other factors but mostly about the quality of any given stations Q.A. ops, Not once while working on and doing pre flight inspecting did I find even minor corrosion problems at AirSt, TVC or Miami. At Miami I flew 40hrs the first week of the Mariel boatlift and was lookin, real close for ANY possible "down check items" including corrosion. So, I gotta ask whats your experience on the 52 ? airplanebuilderman 5yrs2mnths 1.2 extended
As a former USCG AD3 I still think the HH52a was a better helo. It was amphibius. You could stand up in it and it held more people. Iy also had a rotor brake ro stop the blades for quick egress and better open vision for the pilots. If the CG had just developed a new model with a new rotor system.new hull and pilots doors, ect. It woulda been better than the 65 which is already being replaced. The Japs still fly amphibs for a reason, they,r more versatile in rescues/supply missions.SEMPE PARATUS.
how long were you in for? i did 8. I was also a non rate ot air sta humboldt bay. I'd just left for cook school about a month before humboldt lost their 2nd 65
y r there different types of helicopters used by the coast guard , the HH-65 (dolphin)and Jayhawks do the same thing don't they, rescue people using winches
yes thats true, those boats are following the carrier/ship during the helicopter is landing, because if the heli falls off the landingzone into the water, the divers jump into the water and try to rescue the heli crew, the are a video on youtube, where a heli failed the landing and crashed into the sea, and the boats immediately turned to the sinking heli, to rescue the crew.
Along with post/pre flight checks like blacktopsx said if there is an emergency and they need to take off quickly with the engines still running they can not sure about boats but when landing on a runway you have to keep in mind other aircraft/vehicles that could potentially hit you
Most helicopters have a cool down time for the engine, this is because the engine runs at such a high heat and velocity, that some of the parts would not cool down properly if you just went from flight to shut down. You need to idle to allow for proper cooling of the engine parts.
Im entering my junior year of highschool now and i am interested in joining the U.S. Coast Guard. I want to do it because of the honor, training and moral respect you gain from the experience. cooling of the turbines also, if they shut down without cooling, they could temper the metal protecting the air compressor and crack it.
