What do you think of the 3 inch barrel for 44 mag? I have a redhawk bobbed off at 3.25 inches and, although it is a boat anchor in weight, I really love that gun. I just hate to give up that much velocity to a shorter barrel. ...by the way, the original grips on your talo are beautiful, throw away those ugly hogues (they are an insult to a beautiful gun).
@PowerForGood Threw the grips away over a year ago. I don't believe you lose a significant amount of velocity. Iv'e read some interesting articles on the subject, specifically dealing with the powders utilized for the rounds.
i found your video while looking for Ruger Redhawk Alaskan 44mag they are verry similar dont you think they come standard withhe a hogue grip i like these scales better you think there interchangeble
I'm gonna go trade my GP-100 and an auto-loader now. I always knew in my heart I'm a wheel-gun man. Takes videos like this to get to know my 'inner-self'.
Awesome video, great musical accompaniment too. Any suggestions for a different .44 than a S&W or is that blasphemy?
I can't help noticing that you shift your grip on the gun almost continuously between shots. A consistent grip is one of the keys to accurate shooting. Is that why you just show the gun firing and not the results on the target? I have a Smith Trail Boss 3" .44 with the unfluted cylinder that shoots very well. It comes stock with Hogue grips with a lanyard attachment, so I found it interesting that you swapped out your Talo stocks for Hogues. Good video, all in focus and no wasted time!
@hds181 I shifted my grip a lot because this was my first 44 and one of my first revolvers, I was into semi autos. It was surprisingly accurate the first time I took it out, but video is over a year old and a lot has changed since then. I switched the grips back almost immediately and haven't looked back. If you are a revolver man you might enjoy my top ten handguns for 2011 video. I'm a huge fan of anything that goes bang. All the best.
Have had a SW "Lew Horton" edition 3" Mod 29 since late 80's, I have only put approx. 750 rounds through it (200 full loads-240gr .44mags & the rest .44 Special Silvertips & lead semi-wad), it is my favorite EDC revolver and is quite accurate with .44mag ammo but is exceptional with the .44 Sp loads, I know there are a huge amount of premium loads out there mags & spec but for 25 yards or under those older Silver tips will do everything that is required, love this pistol!
Good use of music and visual. I think I prefer at range work shooting my Raging Bull for ease of long term shooting box after box, but I don't use it for carry only range work. I prefer a Glock or LCP for dress. The weight just gets uncomfortable. Nightstand social work this would be fine, but I tend to use what I would carry and practice with the most. I think this short barrel would be in the " it was a gun for fun", category. I bought a Mare's Leg recently from Henry and used it to plink.
@lioncrater Are you referring to the Smith and Wesson Trail Boss that comes in 3 inch? I went to 3 stores and they all had the 3 inch barrels. [ S&W 629 44.] They are definitely legal, and the CA DOJ websites suggest it is okay to sell. I live near the Sacramento area and I saw it at River city gun exchange, and other near by gun stores. I just so happen to pick up the 4 inch instead.
Tried it one handed yet? I have a .41 magnum that is nasty enough. I don't think I would like a 3 inch .44 at all :-). I love the N frame though. Sexiest revolver ever made IMO.
beautiful gun my friend. i have the 4 inch 629. looking to get a nice set of grips for mine. i'm considering a pair from eagle grips. want to sell those wooden ones you took off in the vid? LOL love your vids bro!
This is a great video, the best gun video I have seen. Don't you think exposed backstrap, round grip frame revolvers hurt your hand, a lot more than enclosed rectangular ones?
@MrShadowWang No porting. It's fun to shoot, but managing recoil is all in the shooter. Iv'e nearly pissed myself watching others shoot it, good times.
Finally got this BEAST. Took it to the range for one hundred rounds and my hands are numb. Lovin' it. Too bad it is getting service right now. Cylinder wouldn't open. Not what I expect from S&W and this is a brand new revolver....
@OilTheGun Finally got the beast back after two weeks at the gun shop. Can wait to take it to the range again. Gunsmith said"is locking up because of the fouling".....Gimme a break. I said this is a revolver.
Great video. Are you shooting magnums in this video? If so you must be a monster to control the recoil so well. I'm a tiny man the size of a woman so the recoil really climbs when shooting the mags. You make the gun look like it has no kick though.
@OilTheGun I feel you ammo price pain! I have a Lew Horton 629-4 3" 44Mag full lug barrel, full length extractor, unfluted cylinder, Houge rubber grips and I love it. Those wood grips look nice but the rubber will help recoil.
@mba2ceo I don't consider the 44mag over powered. If someone is used to shooting a lot of 9mm, they will need practice, but the gun is as accurate as the shooter and it's a lot of fun to shoot.
I love those wood grips! So beautiful, but you can't say you've shot a real .357 unless you hand load it back to it's original spec, which is quite a bit hotter than anything you can buy in a store.
@OilTheGun I guess I should have directed that comment more to the guy asking which one has more kick. The .44 is more powerful for sure but like I said, few people get to feel a true .357 magnum.
Good song. How's the recoil on a .44 compared to a .357? I'm a big revolver fan (especially for an 18 year old) I plan in a .38s for concealed carry, .357 because it's the first handgun I fired, and a .44 for meat exploding.

@lskw1 i was shocked at how accurate I was, considering it's my first 44mag. I think the gun is very accurate, the shooter just needs some work with this unfamiliar round. Hogue tames the beast considerably. Thanks for comments.
I'm sorry but is I think you mislabeled your video and meant to put .38 special in the title just looking at your recoil control on it.. hahah Man with the proper shooting grip and platform you make it look like the recoil is minimal !
Beautiful !! I agree that the wood grips really set it off but I'm sure the hogues are more shooter friendly.. That is my struggle with my 1911 is my wrap around hogues are nicer for shooting but i keep swapping em back and forth for my wood grips because the wood looks soo much cleaner and "prettier" haha.. @Mr45Bullitt I knew you knew it, it's awesome. Its no Glock. What a tank. It's so much fun to shoot, pricey for ammo though, but it is my hiking gun and I was surprised how accurate I was with it considering it's my first 44. Wait until you see my Colt video, might be a while, but its a beauty.
@krazy45cat Its my only 44 so I had to get a nice one. The grips really set it off, but wanted to protect them and as you know, hougues help tame the beast...
@hathcocked Thanks man. It's a fun gun to shoot, pricey ammo, but it's more of collectors gun for me. Hope all is well and have a great weekend. I'm heading to our local gun show tomorrow, no guns though, just a little lusting.
Another great video Mr. OTG and my goodness what an f'in beauty that is! Looks like an ALL business machine. Do you prefer the Hogues? Ive grown to have concerns about rubberized grips.
@noBuzzkillin I do like them, I don't prefer them, just more practical for shooting and they make it more fun to shoot. Put them on my spurless Sp101, making it a lot more fun with heavier 357 loads.
@OilTheGun Understood. I used to run Hogues on my G22, but one incident where I had to hold onto them with nervous sweat on my hands and I lost faith. Slipper when wet. Not good for me. I did really like how they felt though.
What do you think of the 3 inch barrel for 44 mag? I have a redhawk bobbed off at 3.25 inches and, although it is a boat anchor in weight, I really love that gun. @aj45colt The kick is acceptable, also surprisingly very accurate. I think I could bring home some bear steak with this little cannon.

I have a model 29 and I shot it a lot when I first got it. But now because of the cost of ammo I don't shoot it very often.

@biguy525 I hear that. This thing will only be brought out as the urge requires and I'll be carrying it in the woods, just in case.

@OilTheGun Same to you man, hope you enjoy the show. I haven't been to one in a few months, I'm about do I think.

Another great video Mr. OTG and my goodness what an f'in beauty that is! Looks like an ALL business machine. Do you prefer the Hogues? Ive grown to have concerns about rubberized grips.
noBuzzkillin 1 year ago
@noBuzzkillin I do like them, I don't prefer them, just more practical for shooting and they make it more fun to shoot. Put them on my spurless Sp101, making it a lot more fun with heavier 357 loads.
OilTheGun 1 year ago
@OilTheGun Understood. I used to run Hogues on my G22, but one incident where I had to hold onto them with nervous sweat on my hands and I lost faith. Slipper when wet. Not good for me. I did really like how they felt though.

I really enjoy your video. The music is great and the video quality is cool and creative. Dirty Harry would be proud!
