I am one of the dislikes on this video. Why? Nilsson and Corelli had two powerful voices, but they could not give a sense to what they sang. Corelli had even a defective technique (at 5:04 is very obvious, enigmi-sono) that ruined his voice too early. Nilsson, as usual, is a magnificient instrument poorly used (phrasing and diction) and a bad actress. Better Turandots? Turner, Borkh, Cigna, Sutherland... Better Calafs? Pavarotti (!), Bergonzi, Bjoerling, Domingo...
Turandot is one of my favorites operas. And this interpretation is marvelous! If you have the rest, post it here, please. It´s a great interpretation.
I remember her first Turandot .... in San Francisco.... it was utterly amazing. I manage to see all of her great roles including Isolde in Vienna, SF, MET, and Bayreuth. Staggering voice. Incredible lady!
As powerful and overwhelming is Nilsson's voice, there is such vulnerability in her singing especially in the passage, "I avenge her cry and her death" I also read somewhere that during a live performance in an open air arena she sang the high C in this aria with such force that people thought fire alarms were going off in the town.
Both singers show the superiority of a vocal technique where the brilliance of the voice is what creates the size within the opera house. Over darkening kills the loveliness of the tone. The tempos are also faster which I think is great. Things keep moving. Really what more can you ask of singers...they look lovely and they have such gorgeous tone. Really wonderful.
Not just a truely historical singer, every time I watch her I am struck by the fact that she was a very scilles acress as well. This coldness in her voice is formidable!
Basi napudrenata koko6ka, koiato, v slu4aia e na play back! Ne moga da razbera, za6to ia prevaznasiat tolkova! Cvili ujasno, v sravnrenie s Ghena Dimitrova, koiato e istinskata i ve4na Turandot!!!!
When I met her at an airport I said: "You don't go up to people and disturbe just to say THANKS for all you've done... She said: I'm SOO flattered... at the landing in the shuttle she came backl to me and said quote: You know I'm the one to be grateful!" That marks, I think; this fantastic artist...
Nilsson's voice is perfectly placed; every tone is tack on. Her singing is even throughout. This is aperfect role for her and she makes the most of it. the sheer cutting edge of her tones is amazing. She's simply wonderful. Corelli is a thrilling Calaf; the role is tailor-made for his voice.

Birgits' Turandot is outstanding ! I heard and saw Nilsson and Domingo at the Verona-arena and they sang tones going up to heaven. You could hear Birgits' high notes over the whole city ,the Italian papers wrote !Succe Pyramidale !
Plenty of times, I saw them in Macerata, and separates in all big theatres in Italy. I remember e wonderful Turandot with Nilsson and Freni alla Scala, for instance :)
@Marcocucciolo91 My God ! Dimitrovas vibrato is so irritating and she has no steal in her voice, which you need to sing Turandot ! Nilsson is the only one who could do this part powerful and with steal and ice in the voice !Brava BIRGIT !
Bravi!!!
I never noticed it before but Nilsson seems to have changed outfits in one second! Talk about quick wardrobe change...she comes down the stairs in a white gown & golden crown, the tail is being held by 2 women 0:00 - 15. Then at 0:17 she's wearing a different gown with a black cape. We see the full costume at 2:12 - 2:40.
@AmericanEvita - I think the video starts with one scene and then jumps to an entirely different scene, at least somewhat later on. Awesome singing , yes?
I've never seen a complete explanation for this odd clip. It begins at Macerata with Birgit and Franco, quickly cuts to what appears to be a studio shot with Birgit singing most of her aria to a mute, bearded non-Franco Calaf, then it switches back to Macerata in time for Franco to reappear and chime in, though the words and the visuals do not match up so where did the sound come from? Why all these stranges splices? & who did them?!
on the contrary. flagstad and nilsson where extremely different. flagstad's voice was golden, rich, dark and heroic; nilsson's voice was cold, icy, bright and penatrating. nilsson also had a considerable higher tessitura than flagstad. nilsson sang suicidal roles like turandot throughout her whole career (a feat which has virtually destroyed the voices of many divas, even dramatic sopranos). flagstad switched to mezzo roles in her late career and sang them quite well.
@dermotafan I love Dimitrova as Turandot but I don't play favorites. Nilsson is sensational as Turandot. Those high notes are incredible. It was her best Italian opera/Puccini role and you have to keep in mind that she was a Swede who mostly sang Wagner. Dimitrova's voice is equally incredible. I also love Dimitrova as Lady Macbeth and Abigaille in Nabucco.
The best Turandot of all time...Nilsson, and the best Calaf of all time - Corelli. This is terrific. I wish I could have seen them perform Turandot. But I was born too late.
I NEVER tire of watching this video. I have alwaysadmired just the sheer power of her voice. She was once described as having a voice that could cut through an orchestra like steel. I believe it!!
Yes, definitely lip-synched: the set (and her costume) change right before the tenor comes in; the beginning looks like it was shot on a small TV set -where's the chorus? The Emperor? In fact, I'm pretty sure that's not Corelli from behind. Something strange going on here - which is not to say Nilsson was not one of the great Turandots, which of course she was.
Inferior to the 1961 broadcast at the met, but that evening was simply the best Puccini ever recorded, and that includes the Callas/Gobbi/Serafin Tosca.
Who sang with Nilsson that evening? Who conducted and is it available on CD? I wish some of her performances could be released on DVD. You know they must be available. The Elektra of her return to the Met in 1981 is only a shadow of La Nilsson. She was way past he prime and the DVD quality is miserable
Operanut9: Ok, I love to hear Jussi B. with V. de Los Angeles on CD in Tosca and La Boheme. Great! And Birgit N. is in-for example in my point of view, in Salome, Bing Gala -72, incredible. But anyway I have heard and learned about many other Opera singers that I didn't knew before here on youtube. For example A. Kraus in Pearlfishers, R. Tebaldi in Mio Bambino Caro etcetera, and Luciano P., P. Domingo, M. Callas-so many fabulous singers!
All greats. I also like Alganin Pearl Fishers, certainly Bjoerling. Love Tebaldi. Whos doesn't? I like Callas but I think there is far too much bruhaha about her to assess her fairly. She is overrated accordingly by a fanatic following.
I am a huge Callas fan and I think the early recordings of hers in this role are phenomenal! Having said that, there is a special place in my heart for Nilsson in this and other roles. Fabulous, the power, the clarity, purity of the voice, truly spectacular! And Mr Stematt, she did have a great sense of humor. She once said of of Turandot, that it was a full pay check for a half a days work! Love her!
Now she is The Turandot!! No one is as clear high and spot on as she. No wonder she was the leading Turandot for over 2 decades. Being swedish im a bit xtra proud!! She was amazing in many ways with a great sence of humor . Rest in peace!!
Two of the greatest at the peak of their craft.
Absolutely thrilling voices. How great to have
this treaure preserved. Thanks for posting!

There are obvious reasons why she ruled the dramatic and Wagnerian repertoire during her time.

WilliamSGilbert 2 years ago 7
WilliamSGilbert-Did that performance with Callas/Gobbi Serafin include G.di Stefano?
paulostroff99 2 years ago
William,
Who sang with Nilsson that evening? Who conducted and is it available on CD? I wish some of her performances could be released on DVD. You know they must be available. The Elektra of her return to the Met in 1981 is only a shadow of La Nilsson. She was way past he prime and the DVD quality is miserable

Alganin?
On youtube there is only something in Arabian called Alganin. Is it spelled wrong or are you cheating me?
petereuropa 2 years ago
You are so correct. Algana is the name I intended. thanks for the correction.

Domingo, M. Callas-so many fabulous singers!
petereuropa 2 years ago 2

If Flagstad voice was like a huge waterfall. Nilsson is a water cutter. What a dense and beautiful vocal instrument. Its incredible!

Flagstad and Nilsson have often been respectively described as a wall of sound, and a laser beam of sound.
