whoaaaa how does this work??? when i saw jimmy page do this it was just feedback pretty much and a friend tried it and basically got nothing but shredded bow. would like to know technical acoustic info but general stuff is good too. Anyone??
im hearing alot of delay and reverb from the amp. when i have tried this i had to use ALOT of gain so it would sustain correctly. but it was also my first time using a bow. but that helped a lot
lambofrock, you'll need an effects pedal to, you can get it to sounds like this with reverb, delay and it sounds like a little distortion, I normally crank the distortion up a little more but thats just me.
Not bad, kid. I'd advice you to use a thick reverb instead of delay, since that will improve the tone as well. It's now still sounding a lot like normal string rubbing and you can clearly hear the delay in it which actually ruins the 'fluid' idea of bowing.
Yeah; that's whot I thought. I think the magic of bowing a guitar is just the reverb. Reverb just gives it this ethereal feel while delay just makes is sound dry and monotonous, like you've described. I'd advice you to pick up a BOSS RV-3 [if you can find those, since they don't make those anymore] or a BOSS RV-5.
Basically that's the pedal Jonsí uses, it won't fail you, I promise that.
also when doing this i was trying not to get the same sound as the fellow "PassionOfDenmark" because i thought it sounded a bit weak in the lower frequencies.
I think that has mostly the do with the cam quality + perhaps he just has the Mid and Bass down a notch to get this more 'high' sound. To each his own, of course.
I think you can get a BOSS RV-5 quite easely and from there you should be okay with the bowing thing. Just toy around with the gain then etc. and you should be fine.
love it

Really great sound! And beautiful playing! very well done..!
But I have a question..Which distortion effect pedal do you use?
AcidXdicA 2 years ago
Hi, this was made a long time ago. At the time i was using a crappy digitech rp50
What you want is a marshall amp type overdrive.
tHoM0r 2 years ago
you're the best guitar bow player on the web!
It just sounds exactly like Jonsi plays it...
And good choice, ebow (electric bow) is so crappy and real bow is so emotionnal!! really beautiful

No matter how many times I look at this video, I still love the tone you got out of your guitar.
Somehow I like this more than most of the other cellobow/reverb/delay/whatnot videos on youtube, or maybe that's just 'cause of your camera.
Oh well, love it ;D

Hay! Quite nice job. What's type of bow is it? It's a chello bow?

hey yea, its a cello. Since this video i've upgraded my pedals so i've got a much better tone now. I might do another with just improv. sometime

still a very good try man !!

Also;
whot equipment are you using for the bowing right now ?? Perhaps I can give you some tips, atleast;
if you'd like ??

only got an rp80, its doing all the reverb it can possibly do. I was actually aiming for a lowish sound, altho, it is fair monotonous.

And if you might be more into Multi-FX;
I'd advice a BOSS GT-8. I'm planning on picking on or two of those up. But hey;
I use a hugely electronic-processed system, so it's about combining it and looking for whot you like best.
I'll give you a link to a discussion I once had with a guy on the Sigur Rós forum, I hope it can help you out a bit.
[I just saw you posted some posts as well, so maybe you've already found out]

Yea, its just the money factor. I don't know if i want to spend more money on this hobby just yet :P
I might get a nice reverb pedal sometime in the future, hopefully it will help the tone a bit.

eeek! lol i just had a look at an old video of sigur ros playing ebow, i didn't realise how different it sounds. Something to work on.
tHoM0r 4 years ago
I think reverb will also really help you out in the harmonics section. It will just sound a lot more sharper, this still sounds really weak. But hey;
I've been looking into this for over 9 months and I still haven't perfected it. So;
that says a lot. Also because I'm quite the perfectionist - HA.
