There's a gag in some early '50s comedy movie where two guys encounter Joan in Hollywood, playing herself, and she suddenly slaps one of 'em for no reason. "What was that for!?" he yelps, and she replies something like, "I do that in all my pictures."

@hebneh Yes, that's from "It's a Great Feeling" 1949. I rented it from Netflix assuming it would be funny but it's just stupid. She reprises her lines from Mildred Pearce which are totally out of context and don't make any sense. They could have made it funny but the writing is terrible.

@StevenRWorley They're out of context for exactly that reason. It's basically having a laugh at the fact that because Joan slaps people in "all her pictures", it's almost as if they add a situation to her films for the sole purpose of seeing her slap someone. So the Mildred Pierce lines being out of context is making fun of this. It's actually very funny.

Those last two scenes were somewhat disturbing... nightmarish. Like the Wicked witch of the west, sort of. The one when the slaps the old lady several times, she almost looks like that witch's sister. and then falling down the stairs backwards like that? The rest was for fun, but those two scenes.... hm.
