@Anthonydp Perhaps he didn't have a good feel in the thumbhole, or maybe he might've slipped during his approach attempting to shoot the split, so he stopped (what we call "balked") in order to reset and regroup.

BTW, according to both the PBA and USBC (United States Bowling Congress) rulebooks, it is not a foul becuase he never let go of the ball, however, he was guilty of a shot clock violation (25 seconds to start you delivery and execute a shot), a $100 fine according to PBA rules.
