  • The expression in her face, alone, is worth watching in this video excerpt but, as I just saw this for the first time last night on TCM, I am awestruck by the beauty and power of her voice. Amazing!

  • OUTSTANDING!

  • I have read the following negative remarks about Lehmann- Poor breath - short top and not stylistically in Italian aria.

Her rcording of Visi d'Arte is tremendous emotionally.

Regarding her other flaws- she must have been a magician because they seem dissapear> The quality of her voice with that sensual throb and her magnificent colume and rhythmic varities makes her IMO one ot the all time vocal artist,

  • Lotte was my paternal grandmother's cousin. I never met her but I wish that I had! What a beautiful voice!=)

  • Brilliant!TY

  • C.W,thank you for this true gem.I wrote a review on this gem on page 2- 10 months ago. L.L.was one of my all time favourite singers, as well as a fine person.

  • simply greatest

  • The truly great singers have technique so skilled that execution is second nature, all their thought can be devoted to expression and interpretation.

  • Amazingly natural...although almost supernatural

  • There is NO ONE on the OPERATIC STAGE TODAY who can sing like this.Lehmann's voice is brilliant, warm and would carry through any orchestra WITHOUT forcing. Vocal Teachers, Sopranos and ALL singers today have NO CONCEPT of what great singing exemplifies. The operatic stage of today, is reminiscent of that phrase, LA COMEDIA E FINITA.

  • i would vote for Jessye Norman, check her out. She's even better than Leontyne Price in my opinion, although norman is a dramatic soprano.

  • Suggest listening to GERMAINE LUBIN - Dramatic Soprano for edification. There is

NO comparison to ANY contemporary singer.

  • Well said. The operatic stage of today is bereft of this kind of warmth and brilliance. Sad indeed, that most singers of today are only pale imitations of what was.

  • Absolutely. That is the reason for the sumptuous sets, costumes, ludicrous stage direction, all, a subterfuge for the lack of great singing, the very essence of opera. At best, it is Musical Comedy.

  • Couldn't agree with you more. If you want to see a good example of bad set/costumes and sumptuous singing, watch Tucker-Stevens-Merrill-Peters Rigoletto Quartett - it is a treat and everyone seems to really enjoy themselves and each other.

Absolutely- today they try to ttick us with visual gimics. Lehman need only her glorius voice and dramatic singing.

  • Jessye Norman has a superior stage presence, and really outshines Lotte in that aspect. Vocally, you're talking about superpowers, but I feel like Norman has more gusto/facial expression than Lehmann. She's absolutely amazing though.

  • Lehmann was an artist of the highest caliber, expression was made evident by the

Art of Singing, not by facial grimaces. Listen to Lehmann sing the Liebestod on You Tube.THAT is singing

  • Wow, I haven't heard much of Lotte, but this is amazing singing. She is 60?!?

  • Born in 1888.

  • Even in the Master Classes in the 1960's there was no wobble despite the loss of the high notes.

  • She was 60 in this film.

No wobble. What a glorious sound.

No one today sings like her!

  • BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • A brilliant singer in the best tradition. There were few indeed any better than her on a given day.

  • man, no one sings like that anymore! now i know why my teacher held her in such high regard.

  • Even Walter Legge ordered Schwarzkopf to listen and learn from Lehmann's records.

  • True! and Schwarzkopf did it so well that she soon became the best....

  • @dynamicstuff73

You are absolutely correct. No one today knows how to sing with spontaneity and brilliance anymore because the vocal teachers do not have any comprehension about the Art of Singing

  • Gosh i hate when she vocalizes like that...SHE MAKES IT LOOK SO EASY! I love this video thanks so much , One of the greatest operatic voices ever!

  • Yes, I have the the 2 VAI master class videos. They're awesome. But this little snipit is all we have of her during her singing career.

  • It's really a strange time to live. Had I been told that one day, I shall be watching this, I would not have believed it. You can buy the two VAI DVDs with her masterclasses.

  • I frwaking love this. this lady is sooo amazing. she rocks.

  • Just Amazing!!!

  • Wow an amazing clip. I never knew she had even made this film.

  • Lehmann is a suprisingly good actress besides of course a splendid singer.

  • another world. how beautiful and full of heart and trusting in the good of people.

what a great voice. the arts have no champions in these days. every life should know this type of music.

  • What a nice voice of Lotte in this lullaby and later in the songs. Quite good actress.

It was very interesting for me, thanks.
