My recommendation is: After removing and washing off the spines, chop/strip or cut in any way you'd like, then boil for about 5 minutes and strain.
Also if you do not like slimy food/soup, do not cook Nopales together with other ingredients. Before adding to other foods, first follow the above procedure.
Nopales can also be cooked on a griller, clean them up and cook as if you were doing tortillas. This also avoids sliminess.
@Califman831 This variety doesn't need a knife to scrape away spines like the other cactus I've seen. You just need to trim the edge... it doesn't have big spines like most...
this makes it easier for the novice cactus cook, as well as for the restaurants....
and this one does not need to be cooked either... it's great raw in a salad or salsa...
@crisolsan introducing the prickly pear to africa would do more harm than good. sure it would feed some people but it would quickly kill other native species that the native animals rely on. take australia for example, they are going through drastic measures to get rid of this invasive plant.
