Fair play to lewis ,he beat everything put infront of him, would he of beat a prime tyson and holyfield im not so sure,i doubt hed of lasted 3 rounds with a 22 year old tyson
@Sircraig050 He used to spar with Tyson in the mid to late eighties until Kevin Rooney (Tyson's trainer) stopped it after Tyson could'nt get near this 'tall skinny kid' who was picking him off every time he came forward. Tyson relied on his aggressive style (which was brilliant to watch) but when he came up against taller, stronger guys who would box him instead of trying to take him on at his own game he came unstuck.
@MrStash1982 If Tyson had boxed in the 60's he would have just been a sidenote. Foreman broke peoples ribs, thats how hard he hit, if you can be Foreman's punching bag for 8 rounds you are good to go with about anyone.
@herodot2 LOL. Tyson ran from Holyfield in 89/90 and had to pay a contract violation fine to Holyfield. When Tyson got the courage to face Holyfield, it was only after Holy was washed up, he was a 20-1 underdog!
Really? Lewis losing to Tyson? Did you watch the fight? They're both older, not in their primes, and Lewis dominated the fight, and knocked Tyson out almost easily. Tyson is great, but lewis in all honestly was pretty much undefeated in his career, as he knocked out both his opponents he lost to. The only boxer that would've had a shot against him would be Ali, and with a shorter reach, less power, and the pure aggressiveness of Lewis, I don't think Ali would win
Lennox Lewis I admitt is a great boxer..he faced everyone in his division, ducked no one, and easily beat Evander and Tyson, But I'm sorry he will never get the praise he deserves because he is simply boring and traditional style boxer. Tyson is a crazy MOFO, but he brings entertainment and surprise into boxing, he gives you goose bumps with anticipation. His press conferences, and pre fight interviews are legendary. Lennox maybe better..but I will always love Tyson.
@robinho1979 Easily beat Holyfield ? Both fights went the full 12 rounds a draw the first time and a decision win the second ...both very controversal decisions.....especially the first many thought holyfield won both..
@Ahmet1445 It's not like Lewis was in his prime anymore either in that fight, it was the second fight of his career.
consider the fact that Tyson had 2 close decision wins over Razor Redock, then shortly after that Lewis destroyed Razor in 2 rounds putting him down 5 times leaving no need for a rematch. I think that was Lewis in his Prime
i think lewis is the best hvywght ever! lewis had evander n tyson in his era, ali had fazier n foreman in his era. in anyone's opinion who wins between these 2 era's? lewis vs ali? foreman vs tyson? holyfield vs frazier? in every matchup imagine each fighter at his absolute peak. anyone give me ur opinions on the matchups or mix'em up gimme tyson/frazier or lewis/foreman watever matchup u wodda loved to seen. love 2 hear ur opinions
Lewis was an amazing boxer, I just wish he had better competition. He had tyson-after cus- and he had evander- at age 59... I would love to see lewis and Smokin joe, that would be a great test for lewis, if he could withstand fraziers power. I dont think lennox gets enough props.
@jmgnyg Lewis did not have Tyson and Evander in his era. That's like Larry Holmes being in Ali and Fraziers era. Tyson started in 85 and was undisputed champion 36 - 0 before Lewis started his pro career and Holyfield had one the belt three times and had a heart condition before they even met each other.
@jmgnyg Tyson beats Frazier and quite likely Foreman, Lewis Beats Foreman and Frazier, Ali beats Holyfield and Tyson. Lewis/Ali, Foreman/Holyfield, Holyfield/Frazier all tough calls. Holyfield/Norton is also a tough call. Larry Holmes I think would have beat Holyfield and Holmes/Lewis would have been close, also what about sonny Liston? you'd have to give him a chance against Tyson, Holyfield and Lewis.
@lshannon41 i personally rate liston high cuz i really think he had a great jab n devastating power, n in the hvywght dvsn that can take u along way. he'd b a tough matchup for tyson cuz of his jab n punching power. evander n liston wod b the best fight of them cuz evander wod box until he got hit...n than evander wod stand n fight like always, n i think in the end evander wins it cuz of his toughness n will. lewis beats liston cuz of his more dominate jab in a typical lewis type of fight
@jmgnyg yes good points, liston would be tough for Tyson, not sure Holyfield would beat him because of his style, Lewis I think would and probably a prime larry holmes.
in my opinion lennox lewis has been, with muhammad alì,the greatest heavyweight boxeur of all time...and i say this even tough i've been a real mike tyson's fan...
i suffered too much that night...and I had to admit that there was no match...it's true that mike was no longer the REAL iron mike, but lennox had every necessary skill to be a great:very long arms, power and an incrdible techique skills, especially the jab.the best tyson too probably woul'd lost against the mature lennox...
@85daijiro very true, also much like Ali did during his era, Lennox fought every top heavyweight during his era and retired without any unanswered questions about his legacy..
@capablemachine Same old excuse IMO. Lewis's career speaks for itself. He fought every champion and top fighter of his era, avenged both his losses, won the lineal championship 3 times, and is second to Ali and Louis in the amount of title fights he has been involved in. He was also the last man to unify the belts and the first since Tyson 10 years prior to do so. He was inducted into the IBHOF in his first year of eligibility and is revered by his peers. He's an all-time great, period.
@baldylocks2009 No he didn't avenge both losses because McCall wasn't a fight and he didn't fight every champion and he didn't win the lineal championship because Shannon Briggs never beat George Foreman. He only unified the belt because Evander Holyfield collected most of them and he beat him after he had been beaten by better fighters at a younger age prior to his worsening health. He's a good fighter but far from great.
@capablemachine The Briggs/Forean fight was controversial but the fact is Lennox beat Briggs and would've smashed Foreman at his advanced age. He still on the Lineal championship and solidified it by beating Holyfield who was No.1 in the world. Holyfield wasn't on the decline. He had a inconsistent run but wasn't declinging at all. He had regained the world title, avenged his loss to Michael Moorer and was the favourite in their fight.
Lewis's resume speaks for itself, Tua, Morrison, Mercer, Mason, Golota (who Riddick Bowe couldn't get the better of in 2 fights whereas Lewis blew him out in 1 round giving him his first real loss), Bruno, Tucker, Ruddock, Biggs, Weaver, Jackson not to mention Rahman and Klitschko at the end of his career. Withe the McCall rematch, he won plain and simple. He was winning on the cards and was en route to a KO when McCall decided to quit. It's a clear win no matter the circumstances.
Facts are that Lewis ended his career having beaten every guy he ever faced, he took on he big names of his era and came out on top, was involved in more title fights than anyone from his era, and is in a select group of men who have been multiple time HW champ. It's easy to pick out minor things here and there but you could do the same to Tyson, Ali, Frazier Foreman, Marciano, Louis, Johnson among others. Fact is all those guys are all time greats, and Lewis deserves to be mentioned with them.
@baldylocks2009 HAHAHAHA Ridiculous, Mercer was a contraversial MD Galota was an overhyped fighter beating a shot Bowe Futch had turned his back on, Bruno was aging and was far from undefeated, Tucker was 6 years since his last professional loss and that was still a UD, Weaver's record is peppered with losses and dangerous matchups, Ruddock was shot an 5 seconds from retirement. McCall was never in the fight he had some kind of crisis. Rahman knocked him out with one punch and Lewis did the same
@baldylocks2009 it's supposed to be best of three not 1 a piece. That's how rivalries go in trilogies. The real measure of his lack of greatness is the manner of his losses in the first place. Phil Jackson never fought a name and never did again. Tua was barely a fight you expect the taller fighter to use his reach and that's what he did but he was terrified of being knocked out so the only people he put to sleep was the audience. His record is mostly names 1 day before retirement.
@baldylocks2009 Foreman was 40 something and the only reason he still had the lineal championship was because he avoided people. The politics of boxing as they were, were trying to promote someone else from Brownsville. Holyfield most certainly was declining as indicated by his declining performances and declining health. The last real fight he had was against a diminished Tyson in '96. Moorer was overweight compared to the last time they met. Emmanuel Stewart said he hadn't been
@capablemachine Again I don't agree. It's easy to pick out things to try and justify your stance but like I said you can do that with almost any boxer. Look at Tyson, he spent the first part of his career fighting blownup crusierweights. On his way to the title his biggest opponent was 250lbs, outsde of that they never weighed more than about 220lbs. And even when he did become undisputed champ he fought Spinks and Williams who were both small HW or natural CW at best.
Then he got KO'ed by Douglas and never got a rematch. In fact outside of Holyfield he never tried to get a rematch with any of the guys that beat him. That's a quality that is becoming of a champion IMO.
Lewis did those things and as his career went on he got better. You put it down to his opponents not being what they were (which I don't agree with), I put it down to a boxer who was a dedicated athlete that was able to outfight and outbox anyone put in the ring with him during his career. He had lapses but every great fighter did, I wouldn't hold that against them just like I wouldn't hold it against Lewis.
@baldylocks2009 Getting rematches is a manner of management not some childish calling out game. He couldn't get a rematch with Douglas because Don King for some reason didn't offer a serious amount of money and then Douglas lost to Holyfield and retired for 6 years. When he came back he was a shell of his former self and a rematch wouldn't have really accomplished or proved anything. It's a numbers and business game.
I know that, but my point was that even though Tyson never got those fights, he still goes down as an all-time great irregardless. I don't care for the business side of boxing, I accept it but it has no bearing on my opinions of boxers unless it is the obvious and most glaring reason for somesones legacy being what it is. Tyson and Lewis go down as ATG's. Stylistically, that is prime for prime of course, they could match up well with most other great HWs of any era IMO.
Well besides Ali, Jack Johnson and Joe Louis rank above Lewis for sure. One can make a case for Lewis being somewhere between # 4 and 10 all time, in the mix with the likes of Larry Holmes, George Foreman, Sonny Liston, Jack Dempsey, Rocky Marciano.
