I'm a high school catcher, and i would get my ass chewed out by my coach if i tried picking the ball lol. They told me I can do it at higher levels, but right now, they want me blocking every damn ball, even with no runners on.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia is a very good catcher and really does look good in this video, yet I know you are not going to throw out a runner if u block the ball and I understand this. But picking the ball just to be quicker is Extremely risking. That ball is going to the backstop if u don't pick it perfectly. Words of advice since I am a catcher, you can never be wrong if you put your body infront to block a ball.

He's had a disappointing career so far, but it's too early to call him done or anything. He's only 25.

Its amazing how a catcher can get a mental block so bad he cant throw the ball back to the pitcher. Didnt Mackey Sasser have the same problem so they just had to move him to another position in the field?

I'm a catcher and where told to block with the chest and body not to be a goalie a baseball is a free base or a run......

He's not very fundamental. Catchers are theoretically supposed to block balls with their chest, not try and glove it. If he wants to be fancy, move to shortstop.

@Malibubeast This drill is meant for when a runner is trying to steal. When a runner is stealing you want to try to throw him out, not block the ball. So there for him picking the ball in this case is correct.

@Malibubeast hes already got the basics down, so he can do whatever he wants. plus this isnt even fancy, you cant get up quickly to throw down to second base when you block it with your chest. Hes in the majors, I think he knows what hes doing.

This drill is meant primarily to optimize his throw to second base while also working the fundamentals of transitioning. You go ahead and try to block balls that you can easily scoop while runners like Jose Reyes are darting to second base and you tell me how that goes.
