@nationsc2011 This was actually stated in the video but the flash on the camera is merely triggering the remote flash. It is not firing during the actual exposure.
If you don't have a means of triggering your flash remotely, you can still play around with smoke photography. You have to work in the dark without the lamp and set a longish exposure (half second to a second), then fire the flash manually while the shutter is open. Pre-focus and leave it at that. It's not nearly as convenient as the setup above, but it does work. :)
