I have always wanted to hear this version but the radio stations went ape over the Diana Ross version. Nice, very nice. NEVER got the respect or airplay it deserved.
I believe this was the original version. I preferred this version because of the many voices which game the song more of a vocal dynamic and wider range. The late Danny Beard with his high vocal scream killed it. The congas are rocking. Diana's version cannot come anywhere close to this. Just my opinion. Peace.
There is a UK promo 45 which was issued to DJ's of Diana talking about the rush release of the Fifth Dimension version.
It was somewhat harsh on the Fifth Dimension, referring to days gone by when "they" (whoever that might be) used to "cheat". The version of "Come See About Me" by Nella Dodds comes to mind.
This version was supposed to be their disco song but Motown rushed released Dianas' version first, i heard that this was recorded way before Motowns version. Not great but McCoo could have song it better. disco joe
I have retained an old issue of Billboard Magazine (circa 1976) and the first version of Love Hangover that charted was the one by the Fifth Dimension. A couple of weeks later, Diana Ross' version was rush released to compete. As to which 7-inch copy I bought, of course, the one by the Fifth Dimension.
Miss Ross recorded 'Love Hangover' in 1975 The album came out Feb 12th, 1976 and two weeks later The 5th Dimension did a copycat cover, and Motown issued Ross' version on 45 and it hit huge - burying The 5th Dimension. Both entered the chart the same day. By the time "Love Hangover" went to number one, Ross had reinvented herself as a disco diva and The 5th Dimension's version had peaked at number 80. It won Ross a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Female Vocal Performance.
Listen for great music like this on a new radio station called "OffTheCharts" - featuring 70's (and some 80's) lost hits and chart wonders!

Same with "Don't Leave me this way" by Harold Melvin and his Bluenotes. It's always the one who COVERED the song who runs away with it as a hit. Disappointing but true.
the 5th Dimension performed this song in Dick Clark's American Bandstand on May 29, 1976. The dancers on AB loved this song.
Dick Clark was loyal to this record maybe because the song was on the abc record label, so I don't think he ever played Motown's Diana Ross version on Bandstand.
I never knew that they recourded this song too.... It sounds quite good, although I do like Diana's version better

@jazzscherzo In fact, Ms. Mc Coo and husband Billy had already left the band. This song is sung by Florence LaRue.
